Disney Channel Introduces Network's First Same-Sex Couple Ever

When my son was in daycare years ago, one of the little girls had two Moms. The kids didn't think anything of it since no one made a big deal out of it.

I am pleased to see disney representing different family make ups, I don't see any agenda in what they did other than to show that there are all sorts of different families out there.

I read a great bumper sticker when in wdw last September actually, it said 'I may be straight, but I'm not narrow' people come from lots of different walks of life, love thy neighbour and do unto others as you would have them do to you. If we all tried to live by this, the world would be such a happier place to be for everyone.

Of course I own my statements. I'm not taking anything I said back - only clarifying. I am absolutely intolerant in that I will not allow what I consider to be immoral influences in the media into my household. These people are actors/producers - with an agenda (of course). How we treat actual gay people in my family is another matter entirely. That is always done with the same respect everyone else gets.

I think i can agree with one thing you stated, please see the bold part in your post.

What's the agenda? Everything doesn't always have an agenda, that argument is overused in society.

I guess the "agenda" was to represent what the real world looks like, not how some people want to paint it, or hide it from their children.

You're entitled to your opinion, but I am as well.

chipnDale79, I think your post hits upon an interesting idea. There are many people who have an agenda to either hide the fact that homosexuality exists or to present it as being a dangerous and harmful lifestyle. any time there is an attempt to show a homosexual relationship is a positive light results in an attack of some type from people with such an agenda. I think the only "agenda" Disney displayed is to show courage and stand up to people with the anti-homosexual agenda I just described. Anyway, thanks for the interesting post. All the best.

I'm just gonna drop this link off right here and merely say that this is why we need to cultivate a more accepting and tolerant culture in the US:

Shocking death threat to 5 year old actress after her Disney TV show featured lesbian moms

Everyone is never going to get along. People are always going to judge others based on how they talk, where they live, and what they do. That's human nature, and yeah, it's an ugly thing. It's never going away. People get death threats for stupid things all the time. People are hateful. I don't see this as abnormal in our current society, unfortunately.

But for the record, the US is very much one of the more tolerant nations in the world. I don't care much for the "tolerant culture" idea. Mostly because tolerance is a really hazy word to use. So many people throw the word around in strawman arguments (not accusing you in particular).

This homosexuality issue going on in society right now is just another thing people get bullied over, nothing more, nothing less. I'm a gunsmith and a licensed firearms dealer. You know how many heads I turn when I say that? I love killing people, because I'm in the firearm industry. No one seems to care about me being judged for that. People still get made fun of for wearing glasses. That doesn't make the news either. It's all about fads. What is cool to hate now, and what is cool to hate the people who hate. Then there are a few civilized people in the middle.

I think that all weighs a lot on how the person presents themselves as well. There is a major difference between those that mind their own business and get attacked for their lifestyle, and people who go around parading that they are gay and proud and get criticized. If I went into work and exclaimed details of my sex life to my coworkers, I would probably not receive a positive response either...and my boss would likely tell me to keep it to myself. It's just not something you should expect to be able to tell the public and not get all kinds of responses over.

Please see my earlier post. Being 'gay' is not only about sex. It is also a romantic orientation. There are plently of single people who are gay, and there are celibate people who are gay, as much as there are dating couples who are gay and married couples who are gay--and that fact does NOT mean we are strictly speaking about sex.

ETA: See this infographic.

No one going to get upset when a newly engaged individual comes to work... showing off an engagement ring... talking about the proposal... wedding plans... honeymoon plans... as long as they are in a heterosexual relationship.

When a gay individual does the exact same thing... no more or no less... to many it is flaunting their sexuality and "parading that they are gay and proud".

Well, I would call those people ridiculous. Just as I would call someone ridiculous for being angry about someone's fashion style or any other lifestyle choices. I just don't think being gay is a big deal, and I feel like it gets way more attention than it deserves. Kids get bullied to the point of suicide for being goth as well, but I don't see people trying to push awareness for supporting gothic kids. I believe that's because 90% of society is full of it and don't care about tolerance as much as they care about their own beliefs, or rather what it's "cool" to believe at the time.

Being homosexual is not the norm. It never will be. The nail that sticks out gets hammered. I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying they aren't special. That's who they are, and I know some people claim they can't help it, that it's not genetic or whatever. I don't know how true that is or isnt. However, lots of people can't help it that they're different. I refuse to believe it has to do with sexuality as much as it has to do with being different.

I'm surprised that anyone even watches the Disney Channel :confused3 It has been nothing but garbage for years. I feel bad for children who are deprived of the classic Disney cartoons that were such an integral part of my childhood, which also influenced my passion for WDW. It seems to be nothing more than mindless sitcoms that have zero reference to anything "Disney". Most of the kid stars are portrayed in roles that promote them being "spoiled" or "brats" or both. Great - just what I would want my kids to emulate...

Sorry for getting off topic. Let the controversial debate resume... :duck:

I really don't see a debate here.......................very easy solution, if you feel the same sex couple show is against your beliefs and you don't wan your kids to watch it...:confused3......change the channel and/or block it.

Problem solved!

What you're looking for is Disney Jr.

Unfortunately, this channel isn't offered as part of my cable package. Which warrants the question of whether or not Disney has it's priorities in order. I think that the "Classic Disney" channel should be the mainstream, basic cable offering, and the "junk shows" should be their secondary, "pay" channel. Wouldn't it be more financially beneficial to brainwash the youth with anything Mickey / Disney related, thus starting the yearning for WDW at an early age? I'm not sure how today's youth could even associate any of that garbage currently found on the Disney Channel with WDW. I suppose the bean counters of the Disney Universe know better than me. After all, they always get it right... :rolleyes2

I very much agree with this - only question I have is was it promoted or made known before hand that there would be a same-sex couple on the show? I could see some people thinking that they could feel "safe" (in their mind) by letting their kids watch Disney and not have them see this as it has never been on before and then be upset when it happened.

I am just big on parents having the information to make decisions they want for their kids (whether you agree with them or not)

I personally don't think that life style is right based on my religion, but I would not prohibit my child (if they were old enough) to watch this show. If a child questioned anything, it would be a good time to teach that people live in different ways that work for them....we don't have to agree, but we have to be respectful.

Max your point is well taken. However if it was advertised, as I parent I believe the proper thing to do would be to sit and watch it and if its not what you want your kids to see, then change the channel!

I am not trying to be a snarky guy, just logistical.(I hope I am anyway)
