I am helping some good friends with an estate sale. One of the organizers of the sale is a certified appraiser. One of the items for sale is a cel from Fantasia, one that I have never seen before....Mickey as the Sorcerors Apprentice. Now, what makes this different from any of the Cels that we used to sell in the Gallery that I was a CM in is that it is kind of a funny picture of Mickey, with him kind of hunched over and winking.....as if it was just one quick moving part of a scene, not a really well thought out picture that was hand drawn to sell to the public. It is also not numbered in the corner like the hand painted cels that are sold now are. Bonnie said that the owner has had it for almost 50 years.....which would make the time about right. Also included is the sketch that the cell was drawn from and the paper looks old. I wish I had had my digital camera so I could have taken a picture of it. Bonnie said that it has a Certificate of Authenticity with it, but I was not able to get a peek at it due to the fact that there were tons of people and we were working hard. But......nobody looked at the cel due to the high price on it. I made an offer that is a bit less than the asking price of $1,450 and it is being seriously considered. The piece is magnificently framed and there is only the tiniest little bend in the corner of the cel....which leads me to think that it might be original.
I have a feeling that I might be on to something big here, but also don't want to get taken either. What would you do?
