I am helping some good friends with an estate sale. One of the organizers of the sale is a certified appraiser. One of the items for sale is a cel from Fantasia, one that I have never seen before....Mickey as the Sorcerors Apprentice. Now, what makes this different from any of the Cels that we used to sell in the Gallery that I was a CM in is that it is kind of a funny picture of Mickey, with him kind of hunched over and winking.....as if it was just one quick moving part of a scene, not a really well thought out picture that was hand drawn to sell to the public. It is also not numbered in the corner like the hand painted cels that are sold now are. Bonnie said that the owner has had it for almost 50 years.....which would make the time about right. Also included is the sketch that the cell was drawn from and the paper looks old. I wish I had had my digital camera so I could have taken a picture of it. Bonnie said that it has a Certificate of Authenticity with it, but I was not able to get a peek at it due to the fact that there were tons of people and we were working hard. But......nobody looked at the cel due to the high price on it. I made an offer that is a bit less than the asking price of $1,450 and it is being seriously considered. The piece is magnificently framed and there is only the tiniest little bend in the corner of the cel....which leads me to think that it might be original.

I have a feeling that I might be on to something big here, but also don't want to get taken either. What would you do?

I think you have made a wise choice to put in a bid and I hope you are lucky. For what you have described it would surely be worth quite a bit more than what they were asking. If there is a certificate of authenticity then you have nothing to worry about. Mickey as the Sorcerers Apprentice from Fantasia is an extremely popular character and an original cel from the film would be very valuable.

I sold one about 17 years ago for $2500( it was Mickey on the mountain, and had the back picture.). I had to buy a car, and it totally broke my heart. I hope that you get it!

I think you have made an excellent purchase. If it is an original cel from Fantasia then you are looking at it being worth in excess of $5,000 (pushing $10,000+ if it is a particularly nice image). If it isn't an original production cel used for the movie, then I think it would still be worth more than $1,000. From your description, it sounds like a one off.

:wizard:

when I got to the sale to help today, there it was with my name on it. The Certificate of Authenticy that is has says it is an original production cel. There is an appriasers form on the back of it and in 2001 the piece was appraised for $2900. I paid $800.

Even if it is a "one off" (and, forgive my ignorance, but I am not entirely sure what that is) it is probably worth much more than the $800 I paid for it.

I am just WAY too excited!!!

Good for you! I am so incredibly jealous. It broke my heart (and still does) to have sold mine! Enjoy!

one-off (wŭn'ôf', -ŏf') Chiefly British.
adj.
Happening, done, or made only once.

n.
Something that is not repeated or reproduced.

Don't worry Linda, they use it at work all the time and I had NO idea what it was until I caught on that it was only used when someone asked a question about a one in a million situation. Looked it up on google.com today and there is the official definition. :teeth:
