The other thing about swimming in a cool pool is it can be a matter of perspective. Here in the Atlantic City area, when the ocean temp gets to 70 degrees the beaches look like everyone's trying to swim to Portugal.

if the water's 70 degrees down here, I'm busting out a wetsuit. that's cold.

Hi Grimley ( love your name and icon, SCTV fan here) :lmao:

First, thanks for helping me get this thread back on track yesterday.

Last night and today we've gotten some great ideas, and are having fun now. :)

OH MY! I also remember those! It would be great if we could get a photo posted by someone. That was sooo long ago! Now that was fun. ( I also think I remember one shaped like a banana? (all-though, I might be confusing that with something I bought at my local candy shop, way back when)

How has a thread lasted this long about a negative thing about WDW!? I always thought WDW went all out making sure every little detail is perfect. That fact/rumour (don't know if it's really true or not) about how WDW has 2 back-up trees for every tree on the property in case one breaks, proves that WDW pays attention to every little detail. If they spend money on that, and on many many other little details, I highly doubt that turning down the temp by 10 degrees in one pool out of dozens would save them any significant amount of money. And that goes for switching to a certain kind of pasta too. Think about it. :confused3

Although, when I went to WDW when I was 13, I remember my parents saying how expensive everything was. I remember asking for a drink and my mom saying that soda was too expensive. So she bought one large coke for me and my brother and sister to share and we all fought over it like mad dogs. LOL :rotfl: (another fond childhood memory)

I guess I just really appreciate everything about WDW. pixiedust:

(~ Just my 2 cents from me, here, locked away in DIS-board jail. :guilty: it's torture here! i've been forced to listen to hour upon hour-long lectures on the definition of the word 'idiot', DIS-Board etiquette, and the cause of the common cold! and worst of all, the pools here are all 80 degrees and up! aaah! i miss connekticut.) ;)

You could probably list that container on Ebay and make a 1000% profit on something that probably cost Disney less than $.01 to have made. :scratchin

:goodvibes No kidding. You know, I am an incurable pack rat. I could probably retire on the profits of all the old junk I've kept...but I can't stand getting rid of stuff that has good memories atached. :scared: I figure that my kids can sell it when I am dead!

One of these days, I'll go snooping and see if I can find it, though, and get my husband to post a pic!

uh, I must have missed the thread on approved pixie dusted topics! ;)

How about buses? I think that sometimes they are a little light on them. I think the transportation system works over all pretty well, but at the end of the night for example, think twice before staying for illuminations if I'm taking a bus somewhere. It can take a ridiculous amount of time to get on a bus!!!!

Maybe we are just really cheap, but we share pop too! Me, my sis, and her hubby will all drink from the same bottle. Hope this doesn't gross anyone out. :crazy2: We eat off of each others plates too. ;)

And haven't you ever noticed the difference between the regular mac and cheese and the spiral shaped in the grocery store? Same price, but there is less pasta in the spiral boxed, so I can see Disney switching to plain to save some money! :duck:

so are you saying the OP isn't telling the truth?

he didn't have to stay onsite, he lives an hour and a half away, and obviously took his own car. he certainly didn't have to stay at the beach club. now the poor guy's incident he came here to semi-vent about has turned into dissertation on pool maintenance and viral infections. ;)

Please do. I'd love to see that! :thumbsup2

Here's another example of what I consider to be Disney being cheap: Disney says they're trying to be environmentally friendly by cutting back on how many towels they have to launder on a daily basis. So they post that little placard next to your towels in the room, asking you to use towels more than once if possible, to reduce the amount of laundering they must do.

While this is a laudable thing, I don't think Disney's doing it for the environment. They just want to cut back on their water bill, IMHO. By the way, I'm one that does re-use towels to the fullest extent, to cut my own water bills! I guess I just get annoyed that Disney is trying to tell people how to save the environment on the one hand, yet on the other hand they developed all those hundreds of acres of what was once wetlands/swamps in central Florida. It'd be great if they were just honest about it: "Hey, help us cut our water/detergent bill and we can try to keep room rates from getting even more expensive!" ;)

No, I'm saying the lifeguard, or whoever it was that said to him, was obviously only kidding and the op apparently took him seriously, that's all.

Yes , I agree! I wish there was a better system to avoid the long bus waits at the end of the night. WDW should have two shows a night. That way, half of the people leave after one show and the other half would leave after the other? I don't know, obviously that would be hard/expensive for them. But more expensive than adding more buses? I wonder.

edited to add: i just realized that i think some of the shows are done twice a night during the peak seasons, am i right?

Thats like getting a car with air conditioning that keeps the car cold but only when its below 90 degrees outside. Imagine bringing the car back when its over 90 degrees and the dealer telling you well the car has air conditioning but it doesn't work as well when its hot out..

That actually is a correct statement - in hotter weather a car's air conditioning has to work harder and therefore it takes longer to cool the inside of the car. The same probably holds true for pool heaters - if it is colder outside, the heater has to work harder and therefore may take longer to heat. Also, the pool at SAB is very large - simple physics say that it would be harder to maintain consistent heat over a larger area. I really don't think this is an example of Disney being "cheap" - like someone else said, how much would they really save by turning the thermostat down on the pool a little bit? I'm sure that Disney DOES do things to cut costs here and there - what business doesn't? - but getting all bent out of joint about it is just silly! I mean really, who's going to stop going to Disney because they don't get fat soap anymore or because it costs 2 quarters to press a penny (still the cheapest souvenir in the park)? Disney spends plenty to ensure that their guests experience the magic - think what they spend in pyrotechnics alone. There is too much negativity on these boards sometimes - "Disney is cheap", "What is the worst experience you've had at Disney?", "Tell us about the worst restaurants..". Are these really information-seeking threads or just a good excuse to Disney-bash?

And BTW, to those who say they "pay for heated pools" - do you pay more than the guests who go in the summertime and DON'T have heated pools?

At the Beach Club in Jan. they had turned down the heat in the main pool to save money and I got a bad cold. (I was sick for 3 weeks :crazy2: after swimming my last day of my trip, otherwise it was a perfect week :goodvibes )

Please make a fuss to Disney if you catch them doing this.
(they said it was for enviromental reasons .........B.S.)

One member on the Dis Board got a $50 dinner credit because he complained.
I wish I would have thought of this. I'm still a little mad.

Have you ever seen Disney turn a first class trip into a real cheap moment? With some of their cost cutting ideas?

I have a question for you. Why did you stay in the pool if you thought it was too cold? And did you ever think that you got sick because somebody else near you was sick? You can't get sick from being just plain wet and cold. And why would you cheat Disney out of money because you got sick from somebody else. That really isn't fair.

While we're at it at does any know if you can reuse refillable mugs for future visits? :rotfl2: :lmao:

Only if you're pool hopping with a 10 year old using a child's pass and an ECV you don't really need... :rotfl2:

To answer your 1st question... I was on my Honeymoon and my wife (from NJ) loves to swim. I went with her because I thought it would be nice to do something that she picked to do. Trying to be sweet

You didn't read this thread, did you???????????????????????????????????????

Your mind is tracking on the wrong part of my question.
I gave an example of something that happened to me ( I told a little story) and then asked if others have noticed Disney cutting cost? Would you like to share a story?

I never asked for money, or swore in stone that there is no other ways to catch a cold. :badpc:

Well, if CNN said it, that should put it to rest.
We know their dedication to absolute facts and nothing more.

Of course, EVERYONE KNOWS that you catch a cold by:

a. Going outside with wet hair.
b. Going barefoot on hardwood floors.
c. Running in the rain.
d. Not putting on a jacket to walk between the front door and the car sitting in the driveway.
e. Not drinking enough orange juice.
f. Working out and not wearing a towel.
g. Forgetting your mittens.
h. Not wearing a hat.
i. Having a bad attitude.

Germs are just a minor player in the grand design of disease...
Attitude and expectation... those are EVERYTHING!

;)

Wow, I am screwed! I do: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, and I!!!! :rotfl2:

I think I feel a nasty cold coming on!!!

A cold nose may be one of the major factors that causes common colds to be seasonal

For people that hadn't seen this on the news. (and don't read the entire thread) I guess if you don't post it ever few pages...people keep missing it :badpc:

This however, is off topic to the thread, but might help people so I will post it one more time. Back to topic.... Have you ever seen Disney try something funny to save money?

CNN -Monday, November 14, 2005; Posted: 4:47 p.m. EST (21:47 GMT)

LONDON, England (CNN) -- British researchers into the common cold say "catching a chill" really does help colds develop -- and are advising to "wrap up warm" to keep viruses at bay.

Mothers and grandmothers have long warned that chilling the surface of the body, through wet clothes, feet and hair, causes common cold symptoms to develop.

But much previous research has dismissed any link between chilling and viral infection as having no scientific basis.

Now researchers in Cardiff, Wales, say they can prove drops in temperature to the body really can cause a cold to develop. (Watch what they did to 'chill' people in the study -- 3:24)

Claire Johnson and Professor Ron Eccles, from Cardiff University's Common Cold Center, recruited 180 volunteers, half of whom they got to immerse their feet in ice and cold water for 20 minutes.

The other 90 in tests during the common cold "season" sat with their feet in an empty bowl.

During the next four or five days, almost a third (29 percent) of the chilled volunteers developed cold symptoms -- compared to just 9 percent in the control group, the scientists said.

Professor Eccles said there was a simple explanation as to why chilly feet could lead to the development of cold virus symptoms.

"When colds are circulating in the community many people are mildly infected but show no symptoms," he said, according to the UK's Press Association.

"If they become chilled this causes a pronounced constriction of the blood vessels in the nose and shuts off the warm blood that supplies the white cells that fight infection.

"The reduced defences in the nose allow the virus to get stronger and common cold symptoms develop.

"Although the chilled subject believes they have `caught a cold' what has in fact happened is that the dormant infection has taken hold."

The researchers, writing in the UK medical journal Family Practice, said that common colds were more prevalent in the winter than the summer, and this could be related to an increased incidence of chilling causing more clinical colds.

But they also suggested that another explanation could be that our noses are colder in the winter.

Professor Eccles added: "A cold nose may be one of the major factors that causes common colds to be seasonal.

"When the cold weather comes we wrap ourselves up in winter coats to keep warm but our nose is directly exposed to the cold air.

"Cooling of the nose slows down clearance of viruses from the nose and slows down the white cells that fight infection.

"Mothers can now be confident in their advice to children to wrap up well in winter."

Cardiff's Common Cold Center says it is the world's only center dedicated to researching and testing new medicines for the treatment of flu and the common cold

the study i saw mentioned that any stress (including cold) can lower your body's resistance and thus you can get more colds, flu, they even mentioned how people can be more likely get chronic illnesses after a particulary stressful/ traumatic incident so i don't think the same basic info is just from one source.

as far as this thread being "Disney bashing" does that also apply to all the restaurant, resort reviews ? a little hint I follow is I read the thread's title and since no one has to read any thread..if i see something i don't find interesting( ie Crocs :teeth: ) i don't read it. the alternative is choose to read it then complain it's there but that is kind of silly imo

I guess being a car owner for over 20 years doesn't make me an expert but we do get hot weather in connecticut and my car cools off just fine. I know it takes a little longer but my car can be as cold in the summer as it is in the winter it just may take longer. So I guess sometimes the pools can't be heated to someones liking in the winter months. If im going to stay at a resort with a heated pool how long should one wait for it to get hot. I don't care if the pool is hot or cold or why they heat it or dont.At the very least when they advertise the pools are heated to 82 degrees and they aren't ... at the very least it kind of is mis-leading. Would anyone buy any product or service even though it may not be what you bought the product for anyways if it didnt live up to its reputatioin. Example you buy an axe that never dulls and never rusts you mainly want it to be sharp all the time and it is but there comes a time it rusts but its still sharp wouldn't you return it. I'm sure the OP didn't stay at BCW for the pool alone but it was included. I don't get it.
