The Livingston Economic Development Council has commissioned a study to help the parish determine which economic sectors offer the best potential for growth.
The study has been in the works for some time, Executive Director John Ware said.
“We’d like to probably get it by December,” Ware said.
But no firm deadline has been set, he added.
G.L. “Paco” Swain, an Economic Development Council member and president of the Livingston Board of Realtors, said he hopes the study will support the creation of a large-scale entertainment district, something that could turn Livingston into “an entertainment mecca.”
Swain said he would like to see the entertainment district draw a major theme park operator, as well as a music venue to showcase local talent.
The council is marketing Livingston to those sorts of companies, among others, Swain said.
“It would be certainly very bold to say we’re looking for Branson in Louisiana, but we’re certainly looking for music to help us anchor our family sector,” he said.
Swain said he represents a group of private investors trying to secure options on the roughly 2,000 acres that would be needed for the district or theme park.
The investors hope to announce they have the options in place around the time that the economic development study is ready, Swain said. That will likely be sometime around December or January.
