Walt Disney World announced Friday that it is raising ticket prices — by more than 10 percent in at least one case — in the resort's second round of price increases in less than a year.

Effective Sunday, the base price of a one-day ticket will rise from $82 to $85 before tax, an increase of 3.7 percent.

Prices will rise more steeply on longer-term passes. The price of a five-day ticket — one of Disney World's best-selling ticket options — will jump 5.9 percent, from $237 to $251.

The price of a seven-day pass will jump 8.1 percent to $267. A 10-day pass will soar 11.1 percent to $291.

In addition, the price of adding a "park hopper" feature to a pass — allowing visits to multiple Disney theme parks in a single day — will inch up from $54 to $55 for all multi-day ticket options. The feature will cost an extra $35 for a single-day ticket.

I don't necessarily like their strategy but with free dining I'd imagine for onsite guests, overall prices are cheaper than a few years ago with the end result being much greater lock in to Disney. I wonder how many people have reduced their number of visits to Universal from Disney as a result. They certainly seem to have no trouble filling the parks (except perhaps during the quietest off season days)

We're annual pass villa people so perhaps see it more but still see ticket prices as tremendous value, especially compared to what you get for the same price in the UK. You only have to go to Gulliver's World in the UK to see why Disney prices are worth it.

Don't get me wrong, me and the kids love Gullivers in a comedic and slightly tragic way and we're annual pass holders there too. You just have to ride the tractor ride or dinosaur explorers ride in Gulliver's Warrington to understand the tragic comment, so bad its funny.

because of the proximity of universal, disney is playing with fire when it raises prices...

if universal didn't exist, then the sky would be limit.....well - not the sky, but they wouldn't have to worry as much....

but universal is there...and universal does offer very good value for money...
which consequently raises the price elasticity of demand for disney...(yes, i have two degrees in economics)..

the higher the price elasticity, the more likely that even a small change in price will drop demand...

and the availability of a good substitute raises the price elasticity of demand...
or more clearly, as the substitute gets better or closer, the price elasticity increases....

universal can't be any closer but is definitely getting better all the time....

in other words, it's possible (depending on the price elasticity) that even a tiny price increase might drive revenue down rather than up due to the resultant decrease in demand....

disney is playing with fire...

Don't get me wrong, I know it's not a clear cut strategy and it has risks but I think their policy is working. Increase the price as they will always fill at peak times, probably even if the price were 50% higher. Then discount things like food and accommodation in off seasons making it less likely guest will leave the property once they arrive.

I think the problem with Universal is I just don't see them as a destination, merely a day out. Disney know this and try to prevent people wanting to go on a day out as often. Things like encouraging to book your meals each day on Disney property 6 months before you even go are great for this.

I wouldn't dream of staying at a Universal hotel for more than a night or two. If they built 1 or 2 new parks and better value hotels maybe but I don't know what they'd fill those parks with except more coasters and coasters are firmly in the "day out" category rather than holiday destination.

I think it's some time to go before Disney reach tipping point in reality. That's just an opinion though.

yes, disney is banking on brand loyalty....
when brand loyalty is high, demand is inelastic.....
and brand loyalty to disney is definitely strong..

but not everyone is brand loyal to disney....
it's an interesting study :)

Annual pass holders at Gulliver's AND Disney? Now there are two extemes, but i have to say Dumbo has nothing on Billybobs Biplane:rotfl::rotfl:

I am surprised Disney is raising their prices now as they usually do it in August just before they release packages for booking in the next year.

Waiting for Universal to put their prices up now - they usually follow Disney.

Looks like I better get on it today and buy our DW park tickets, Ive been holding off for a while as the prices been droping with the $ rate getting better but any price increase will just wipe that out....I take it UK prices will remain the same still this is just US tickets?

You know what, Gulliver's is awful after you've seen what Disney can do but it's heart is in the right place and I swear, the kids (albeit pretty young at 5 + 3) love it. It's great for weekends rather than be stuck in the house under the Mrs feet.

Just bit the bullet and bought 4 annual passes. Holy Cow Batman that's pricey! Better than the price tomorrow though $101 more from tomorrow for family of four.

Hoping to get at least two trips probably totaling 7 weeks out of them though so that works out at around £6.50 per person per day. Pretty damn reasonable I think.

Might work a few more weekends and squeeze in a week at Christmas yet, you never know what last minute hols might pop up. Yes I'm obsessed. I'm very much in the stepping out of MCO and breathing a big sigh of relief because I'm home!

yup...i can't buy them until we get there in august, since i'm going to upgrade the 2 day tickets that come with our package...
and i'll be buying 6 premium annual passes..
you said it right - holy cow batman, i better have a few drinks before i make that purchase

So let me get this right......the 7-14 & 21 day ultimates have already gone up, so I have no need to purchase before tomorrow??? is that right Wayne...???:confused3

Never known UK prices change with US annual increase so I would be surprised if they do.

Phew that was a close call, Just sitting in the chinese resturant about 9pm tonight and DW said did you order the DW tickets then today seeing there going up in price from tommorow.

MMmmmm no I forgot, Just got back anyway in time and ordered from Orlando Attractions got 2 Adults & 1 Child Magic Your Way Tickets for 10 days , Total inc shipping £466.71.
Now thats not a bad deal , well i hope so !!

The funny thing is that OH and I are the complete opposite - we see Disney in the "Day Out" category and would love to stay onsite at Universal. We are recently back from 17 nights in Florida and went to Disney for only 3 days. The rest of the days apart from Discovery Cove we used our 6 park flex tickets in some capacity. I honestly think Flex tickets are WAY more value for money than Disney tickets -and I know which I would pick if I had to choose betewwen them.

It's all a matter of opinion though and I'm sure Disney will always have a hardcore of fans that will pay however much and be happy with an exclusively Disney holiday.

i'm a hardcore disney fan, and your basic universal hater - but i think universal is much better value for money...especially if you stay onsite...but even just the tickets are better value than disney tickets...

We love staying at Disney onsite but also stay at Universal HRH for a few nights. Agree that the universal tickets are good value.
