DisMom Princesses in training for the Princess 1/2

I am very pleased to report I ran 9M this morning, and it felt great the entire way! I've been ramping back up to 10M weekly runs before my next Half in August, and I'm so glad this wasn't painful. Last week when I did 8 the last 3 miles were not good. So glad I'm getting my conditioning back!

It is good to remember where you've been and where you want to be. In 2007 when I first started walking (couldn't run at all at first!), I was totally out of shape and miserable. I had so much weight to lose...we'll I still need to lose plenty, but I feel so much better about myself and I know I am strong and I can do anything I put my mind to. That is the power of doing a Half marathon -- I am so excited to be training for more!

Can I join you ladies? :lovestruc I am signed up for the Halloween 5K in October and just finished W2D2 of the C25K program. I am STRONGLY considering doing the Princess 1/2 Marathon in 2012. (I still can't believe those words are coming out of my mouth!!!) I am a SAHM to two fabulous kiddos. I just started running, but have been doing Taekwondo 3X a week for about a year and a half. I love it, but it is so totally different from running. I am hoping that I learn to love running too!

ColleenG -- No reason to feel bad about going slow at all. My dh trained for and ran the Boston Marathon this year, so he is a much more serious runner than I am. Anyway, they told them at the training workshops you should do your long runs at 5mph, and your shorter runs at your normal speed. I've adopted this, even though my top speed is not a whole lot faster. The other thing I try to do is intervals at least once a week. I'm not real scientific about it, I alternate 5.0 and 5.5 mph when the song changes on my ipod. It does seem to help and I feel like I've had more of a workout when I do it. Like I said, I'm not a serious runner, so I just adapt the techniques to something I can do without stressing my mind too much!

:welcome: Taryn! You will have a wonderful time at the Princess!

I just got back from doing C25K - W2D3. I learned that I do much better when I listen to music when I run instead of a podcast. I also made the mistake of looking at W3D1 and I am TERRIFIED!!! 3 minutes of continuous running seems CRAZY to me at this point. I was dying a 1 1/2 minutes. Wednesday should be...interesting...

I finally updated the first post with Spottedprincess and TMcDwyer!

I'm still on vacation in Oregon and have yet to do a run. The cotten wood trees are wrecking havoc on my allergies, so running outside is impossible. We'll be home Wed. after an overnight flight, so I may wait till Thursday to run. I think I'll do 1 day of W1 and then 2 days of W2, then finally start W3.

Thanks! The cotton wood is pretty bad here right now too. I am headed to South Carolina on Thursday and I am really nervous about running in the humidity.

The best thing is to run first thing in the morning.

We moved to MD a little over 2 years ago and this is my first time back to OR since, and I have been fighting my allergies since I stepped off the plane. I knew I had bad allergies and asthma living here, but I guess I never realized that it was HERE that caused my allergies to be so bad. They bother me in MD, but never to this level. And as much as I miss my family and friends, I'm so glad we moved!

I finished week 6 last night. My shins were hurting most of the time but I was able to push through it. Today my shins feel the best they have since I started running. Not sure it it's all the Advil I've been taking or I just was able to stretch really good and ice the heck out of my legs after my run. I've also tried to wear my running shoes around a bit outside of running just to give my feet more of a chance to adapt to them. Wore them all day today and felt pretty good. Tomorrow starts week 7!

Hey Everyone,
Nice to be added to the thread, Thanks!
I just got back home from doing my first 10k at the Pacific Crest event in Sunriver, Oregon. The weather was beautiful. I'm happy to say I crossed the finish line while still upright. I went into it feeling great mentally and physically. I was so pumped. I started out great. Made sure I kept my pace and didn't go too fast at the start. Right at the 3 mile mark I was in a groove, thinking to myself,"why did I ever have doubts in the first place. I've put in the time and effort training and now it is paying off." Then came mile 4. In just one short mile I went from ,"I really can do this to, Oh my what's happening to my body." At this point I got the worst pain in my right hamstring. The I noticed I was dizzy and struggling to jut put one foot in front of the other. So I slowed down my pace and at each of the remaining hydration stations I had them douse me with water. Originally I was aiming for an average 14 mm. Now I just wanted to finish, even if I came in dead last. As I went further everything was getting worse, when I saw my husband at the .2 mark cheering me on I started to cry. I did finish with an average 15.37 mm. I was happy with that. I was explaining to my family, who did the race too, what happened at about mile 4; hamstring pain, dizzy, fatigue,
goosebumps and lightheadedness. Does this sound like anything to anyone? Well I didn't know just how serious it was until I talked with medical on Monday. Heat exhaustion. They also had me read some info about it and it was a huge wake up call for me. I felt defeated. They told me that slowing down and having the water poured on me was a smart thing to do. Some things for me to keep in mind are we were at over 4000 ft elevation, it was my fastest pace and hottest temp. for that distance to date. I'm fully recovered now and ready to continue with my training. I'm looking up ways to keep cooler and slowly train my body for the heat. So this event was a mixed bag for me. I'm glad to be making my training a priority and learning as I go. I know it will pay off in February. Thanks all you other Princesses for your support.princess:

Just checking in. :) I do C25K W3D1 tomorrow and I am NERVOUS!

Today I had acupuncture for the first time to help treat my PF. I was fascinated by the theory behind it and really believe that it will help. I go back in two weeks.

I did w7d1 today. 25 minutes was tough today. I don't know if it was the humidity or what. Cardiovascularly I felt fine, but with about 8 minutes to go my legs just didn't want to do. I walked for about 30 seconds but it was a real push to make it the rest of the way. It was pain, just from my knees down I felt like my legs didn't want to hold me up. I'll try again on Thursday. Tomorrow is Zumba day.

Do you like Zumba? I have been thinking of trying it...

It's a lot of fun. I am so uncoordinated it's not even funny, so I'm sure I look like an idiot doing it. It's a good cardio work out and you sweat A LOT! I've been doing it for about a month now and have gotten some of the moves down and others I just can't get so I just modify it to what I can do. My philosphy is if I'm moving, I'm exercising so who cares what it looks like.

The official results for the 5k I did last week are posted. I came in 287/357 with a time of 37:04. The time was better than I thought. Not sure how they did the final results.

Congrats Colleen! That is awesome! I was going to have the Halloween 5K be my first race, but I am thinking now I need to find one to do before that so I can get an official time. :)

I am bummed. I am thinking that my little escapade with the golf cart on the 4th may have done more harm than I originally thought. (I fell off and it ran over my leg. We were passing a house that was on fire and I was trying to get to my cell phone to call 911 and I thought my Dad had already stopped so I stepped off. The whole thing is a total blur. I thought I had escaped with a scraped up knee and bruised ego.) I think I did something to a tendon in my left leg. It is really sore today. I just sat on the side of the hot tub and let the jets beat on it for awhile. It feels better now, but I think I am going to skip my run (W4D1) tomorrow and do a bike ride or something. My next run is scheduled for Saturday. I am really bummed because I was starting to feel really strong and I was looking forward to the challenge.

Sorry to hear about your leg Taryn.

So who has signed up for the Princess yet? I tried to yesterday but it said to try back later. I think I will wait till July 18th when the credit card flips over to the next billing cycle.

I have decided running when it is humid just bites. I w8d1 tonight and my leg was killing me. I think part of the problem was I hadn't taken any Advil since first thing this morning.

Colleen - I agree about the humidity, but I am still finding it easier than the altitude at home. I have not signed up yet. Waiting to be sure the ladies I am planning on traveling with are 100% in so I don't end up alone. :goodvibes
