Hello again and good morning (well, almost afternoon!). I've gotten the "okay" to get a new sewing machine - it's a Mother's Day/Birthday present! :cool1: I am still thinking about getting the Singer Esteem since it is on sale - any advice on that or other machines comparable in price??? Also, if that is what I get I would really like a ruffler foot. Does anybody know which kind to get? I know there have been some other posts about this, but I can't seem to find them. Any help is greatly appreciated. I can't wait to get a new machine and sew, sew, sew!!!

On another note, I think the Disboards needs to get a new smilie that is sewing related!!!

Jess

Woohoo! Congratulations!

I haven't seen that machine, so I can't help with comparables.

The ruffler--after you purchase your machine (or at the time, if it's through a dealer who handles accessories), check the type of shank. Most Singer domestic machines--but not all--have a slant shank. That will be the starting point for your ruffler search. Mine is ancient and has been handed down through various machines--works fine, though. *LOL*

So, I haven't posted in a while, but here is a picture of dd birthday dress.

This is it for today. I also made this skort for my DD yesterday also. Just wanted to share. I was getting so jealous. ;)

I agree! she sooo looks like a perfect lil flower in the first photo. too too cute!
I love the skirt/skort combo ! is it the pattern from ycmt? i thought about purchasing it from them for my 3yr old and 15month old.

Okay, sorry for all the questions, but does anyone on here use the Brother Sewing Machine - XL3750 that they have available at Target? I am debating between that and the Singer Esteem because they are very similar in price/functions. The Brother has better reviews. I have read though that the brother machines use plastic bobbins. Is this right? Do they work well? Can you still use metal ones? And is there a ruffler foot available for it?

Thank you thank you for all your help. You all have been such an inspiration for me! When I found out I was having a girl, I got so excited to start sewing her outfits and I can't wait to plan all her customs for when we go to Disney in over 2 years!! (A little obsessed maybe!!:rolleyes1 )

Thanks!!

Jess

Thank you for all the great compliments! Yes, the skort if from YCMT. I love it. This is the second one I have made, & plan to make many more.

I wish that the designers at the YouCanMakeIt place would make larger sizes....I've only seen a couple of size 8's and we're in a size 10-12 now, so even the 8s would be a bit of work to upsize...and I'm not particularly good at that anyway, lol. But, I'm guessing that most preteens and teens aren't into mommy making them clothes, even the fabric store patterns are few and far between in those sizes. Thankfully, my girls love homemade clothes.

I had that SAME wish last night!!! My step daughter can still wear an 8 but she's on the way to a 10! After this summer, she'll be completely OUT of the 8's! A lot of the patterns w/ cute dresses only go to 8.

perhaps the powers that be will hear!!!

:goodvibes

I'm hopelessly behind, as usual, but I saw your posts as I logged in and had to respond. I totally agree!!! My DD is in the still an 8, but almost a 10 category (actually we buy 10/12 RTW shirts so that they are long enough) and it really makes me hesitate to purchase the YCMT patterns. A bit ago YCMT had a link to a questionaire in one of the newsletters. My suggestion as to what I'd like to see more of was patterns in the the 7-14 size range. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I wasn't the only one with that request.

I know! I respond to all the emails regarding new patterns that I would love if they would make these patterns at least go to a 12. I mean, just draft pattern pieces for us that are bigger! New Look goes from 3-8 a lot of the time. Is it hard for those who already know how? And by that I mean "not me." HA!

I am totally dependent on those with more brain power and delightful creativity to help me sew.

WOW~ She really does look like a flower in that first pic! I love the dress, it is absolutely adorable! The little skirt/skot is cute too! Thanks for sharing!

An adorable baby snake? :rotfl:

So what baby stuff are you sewing?

:rotfl: Everything is cuter in miniature... even snakes.... I have to admit, after I finished the quilt I made for my sister in law... I haven't made anything else. Bad Aunt... I know. I'm fairly certain the new mom and baby have everything imaginable though, so I've had a hard time coming up with anything. Suggestions anyone?

O h I love this! Is the tulle underneath seperate? May I ask what pattern you used? This is so frilly and feminine!!!!

It is seperate. I used the pattern that said to tie the strips onto the elastic. I'm not sure where it came from. Probably the links on the first page. Very easy. But I love it!

I have several of these and they are printed onto the fabric. I think that they will hold up nicely. I haven't had a chance to use mine yet. They are not a transfer.

THANK YOU! That is exactly what I was looking for. Just couldn't think of the word transfer.

oh goodness... I love this picture! How cute is she?!

That is very freakish!!! I am actually very near Kansas City and I've lived in St. Louis, Lebanon, Cape Girardeau (sp?), Marshfield, and I went to school in Rolla. So I know Missouri pretty well!

... no stinking way. I went to school in Rolla; graduated in 06.... PM me if you want; I'd love to know if we know each other or some of the same from school... crazy stuff!

If you can do a dress you can definitely do a circle skirt. They are super easy. Check out Theresa's links at the beginnnig of the thread and WELCOME!!!!

Oh I don't know if I can actually MAKE the dress....I'm just going to try :lmao: This is what I've actually accomplished so far in terms of my appliques...I'm a scrapbooker, not a sewer...but I'm trying ;)

Okay, I give up on trying to quote the picture and thumbnail it.
But I tried.
I was posting about the cutie in her birthday dress.

Oh my goodness!! She is just so adorable! I love that first picture with the ruffles sticking up behind her bum!!
There is nothing in the world cuter than babies in rumba ruffles!!!

I don't have the model that you mentioned, but I have another Brother machine. I have loved it so far (though it's in the shop right now getting fixed - the timing is off). On my machine, it has a snap on foot, so I ordered a snap on ruffler on ebay. It works very well.

I hope you find the perfect machine for you!

Thanks for your help! I am such a newbie to some of this stuff, but I would really love a ruffler.

I am pretty sure this Brother also has snap on feet. Was the ruffler you ordered the new one for the Brother machines? I have seen this one on ebay as well, it was somewhere between $20-30.

Thanks!!

BUT why cant i read a sewing pattern. I bought a few patterns to make very simple pull on shorts for my 2 1/2 year old and my 6 year old - both boys.
I hate those patterns - once you take them out of the envelope - there is no going back in and it is such a pain if i want to make 2 different sizes -
how do you ladies do it? should i transfer the pattern to tissue paper. any suggestions will be helpful
thanks for listening to problems of a newbie.
Jennifer

I buy most patterns at $1 or $2. I only keep what I need and throw it all out! If I really like the pattern, I keep only the peices I need and put back in the envelope. Like a basic short or skirt. But that is very rare.

Coming out of lurking so I can at least subscribe :rotfl: I'm going to be attempting to make my first full dress for this year's trip (I started with making my own appliques and sewing them onto pre-made tshirts last year). I would love to make a circle skirt but don't know if I'm ready for that yet!!! Wish me luck!

Welcome to the group! A circle skirt isn't that hard. You'll do great and we are all waiting to see the picture! :goodvibes

Coming out of lurker-dom for a while.

This is a dress MIL made for my older DD last year. There's also an Alice in Wonderland type apron that goes with it. Still one of DD's favorites!
.

This looks so cute! I never thought to make a dress or something out of it. I covered a travel pillow! Sometimes I am just not very creative. :confused3

OK... question....

Has anyone bought/seen the Disney Fabric Art squares? What I want to know is... does anyone know what these really look like? What I want to know is, are the images printed like it would be for any fabric you can by at a store? Is the image more like it would be on a tshirt (and could possibly crack?)

I forgot... you can search :wizard: for disney fabric art square to see what I'm talking about. I wasn't sure if I could steal a picture from there or not? :confused3

I have a couple I put on a shirt. They wash pretty good.

Hi again all you talented people! A few months back someone on this thread made me awesome red mickey head T's.(The ribbon across the chest one) I need a few more, but can't find the PM or name anywhere. If it was you, please PM me!
BTW- we got so many compliments on them last trip, my sister now wants them for our next one!
:thumbsup2

You did a great job! It is not a big leap from scapbooker to sewer. I did it too! Only problem, I love sewing and haven't scrapped in months! I need to get my pics from 06 done and 07 before we go in Dec!

Oh I meant the pattern for the dress:) I too, used the pattern from here for a tulle skirt. I've loved all 3 that I have done!

so was the dress hard to do? Were all of those ruffles a headache or fun??
