I cut a 2" wide strip of fabric, made it 2x or more times wider than the skirt, used my rolled hem stitch on my serger to hem both edges, ran a double row of basting stitches and gathered it then stitched down the middle and unpicked my 2 basting rows. :thumbsup2

I've done this with grossgrain ribbon as well - nice crisp ruffles and no hemming!

I also like to use water soluable thread when I'm forced to remove basting rows - the top thread dissolves and I just pull out the bottom thread.

Michelle,
I'm so sorry for what your daughter is going through. You do not have to answer me but I wanted to make sure the the psychiatrist has considered a low dose antipsychotic. Sometimes children with anxiety will have intrusive thoughts like you are describing and the antipsychotic will help stop the thought. Our Child psych (I supervise two children programs in a community mental health center) uses abilify a lot with children your daughter's age.
Good luck to you and prayers for DD.
Susan

Susan,
Thanks so much for your concern. I think that the risperdall is antipsychotic. It is used to treat schitzophrenia/bi-polar. I will talke w/ her on monday.

We had another tough night last night. :headache:

Let me say everyones outfits are fabulous the last day and a half. I have been a little absent , life has been busy.
too make a long - very long - story short.
My oldest Anastasia (7)has gone to private school for the past 4 years. since 3 yr preschool! And since Kindy year (last year) she has had one girl picking on her. calling her ugly, stupid. the usuall bad name things. then she started pushing her. Last tuesday there was a field trip to a zoo. I did not go - i usually do - but a friend went w/ her daughter and told me how this other girl just taunted anastasia. well I guess after a couple of minutes anastasia lashed out and told her to "shut up, stop picking on me!" then the little girl told the teacher how anastasia was yelling at her and being mean. well the parent stepped in and told what "really" happened. I call the school the next day and yeall and say how they should have solved this last year, why does a parent tell me thins and not the school. So that was Wed. Well I went in her room that night and read her diary. it tore my heart out. Anastasia has such a small worth of her self, saying she is stupid, she needs to be better so the girl will like her etc! WOW! So thursday I call again. That night she came home and said how the principal told her to be friends and play nice! I told her"you don't have to be friends with that girl!" she says the principals says she has to! I had enough. did not send the girls friday! Called a new school and they were so nice about it and agreed to accept her if she passed a test!
They called friday at lunch and said it was the highest they have seen on an entrance test in years and they would be happy to have her! They are a charter school with an accelerated learning like the private school!
I disenrolled monday and she started tuesday!
My baby is so happy now. She was happy when she came home tuesday and she made friends with a girl and she gave her a welcome to our school card! I am just so happy that this seems like the right thing. What was I spending that $9,000 for this year! To pick on my kid and do nothing! We are out of there! Jojo goes to there preschool and will for the last 7 weeks of school!
So last night she asks when I wil lstart sewing for her now. I told her she said she did not want me to anymore! Well I guess that girl thought she was ugly in my clothes!!!! So that mean girl influenced everything and I am glad she is out of that school!!

Lori

So sorry that this happened to Anastasia. She does not deserve that kind of treatment. Kudos to you for being a good mom and finding a better school for her.

Here's Gabi's new outfit, she'll probably wear a tee shirt under the top when we go to Disney as she is so pale and burns so easily. I also am making them a bit big for now as we don't go until September :)

Beautiful outfit.

We just got back inside from playing outside with the neighborhood children. Some of those kids are just too wild and none of the parents watch their children. I like that DD has some kids to play with (she's an only child), but I don't think that I can let her play outside without an adult around. I'm afraid that the other parents might think that I am stuck up for not letting DD out to play without me their. The other children kept saying it's ok, but being outside I noticed that there was a man that kept walking around. I had never seen this guy before and I really didn't know how to take this guy. Am I being paranoid? or am I normal??

NOT paranoid in my book - just being a responsible parent (which does not happen often enough in my book).

I am fixing to applique the Incredibles logo onto a shirt and I can't decide what colors to do.

Here is the logo:

The_Incredibles.jpg

Would you---
a.) go around the whole thing in black
b.) go around all of the "i" in yellow and both swirls in orange (that would do the whole applique)
c.) or do something else. If this is your answer -- what would you do?

I have the applique ironed on the shirt except for the white dot. I have one cut out but I didn't iron it on yet. I don't think it needs it and nowhere else in the whole outfit is there any white. Would you go ahead and add it or leave it off?

Thanks ladies!!!!

I'm late but I vote B. Please show when you are done.

Brian just told me a cute story, so I had to share it!

Arminda's school had a pie social last night. Mom and Heather came too. While we were in the cafeteria eating our pie and ice cream, Brian was sitting at the end of the table with Lydia and Tessa. Brian said Tessa looked over to Lydia and said, "No one has ever has as good as friend as you, Lydia." I believe they then hugged.

Isn't she a sweet heart!! :lovestruc

(and just to make sure I heard it right, I asked Brian if Tessa meant that Lydia was the good friend, and he said she had!)
And, because it is technically Thursday, and our weigh in day, I'm going to post my loss for the week!!!!!

!!!!!!!!!4.2 POUNDS!!!!!!!!
   Thanks in part to the teeth thing, and partly to actually being careful this week!

So sweet of Tessa. And CONGRATS on the weight loss!

I am so very jealous of this bookcase. I dream of building one in our new home.

Ok - I have been looking at Carla C's A-Line pattern and I think I want it - I just have to figure out if I can afford the $10 this week! Can someone (or someones) tell me WHY I should get it - I have a little A-line dress pattern from McCall's or Simplicity but I just can't seem to make it come out right! What makes this one different?!

Thanks!!!

Kristina
I don't have the big brand a-line pattern but CarlaC's is so very easy to follow. I like that is can be made reversible and that it can be made in so many sizes.

AWWWW! That is sooo sweet! And YAY!!!! for your weight loss!!   Way to go!!!
I am sad to report a weight gain:scared1: 2lbs! I blame the girl scouts! Those darn cookies are just tooo good!:rotfl:

I just got a bunch of fabric to start making outfits for my munchkins, and hopefully I'll have some free time this week to actually get started.

In the meantime, I thought I'd share a few things I've made.

cowboyroom.jpg

The reversible comforter and pillows and curtains (plus the painting). My younger son looooooves Woody and his name just happens to be Andrew.

castlecake.jpg

This is my very sad attempt at making a castle cake. My princess really wanted one and was quite insistent that Mommy make it. :confused3

And this last one, I'm rather proud of:

Now, if only my husband would organize his junk more neatly. :sad2:

WOW! His room looks fantastic and I think the cake looks great! Good job on everything!

I think you've already decided but one more vote for B without the white dot

I finally got the Fabric Hound website to work for me and had to show all the pattern that I bought. I can't wait until it comes in. I'm not quite sure what fabric I will use with it.

I also made this for DD today. It is a YCMT pattern. It actually took me 15 minutes to make this.
S2010094.jpg

I am about to try my first pattern by Farbenmix next week hopefully :)

You take some AMAZING photos! :worship: And I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Pirate Mickey & Minnie embroidery on Gabi! (I loved your photography so much, I had to Google you to see if you were in my area! Of course, I was bummed to find that we are many many miles from me :sad2: )

Awww, thanks, I don't take photos professionally but thank you for the compliment :)

I LOVE that weeke pattern. I really need to get it. Such cute options there.

AND, I have to ask - how on earth did you make that in 15 minutes?

DROOL! Amazing! I can't believe you actually made that! Will you come to my house and play?

I like Carla's pattern (and in general any YCMT pattern) for a number of reasons.
1. For my mind, the instructions seem easier to follow. Many times, the instructions are instructions more than patterns. That helps me understand WHY you cut something a certain way or a certain shape. That helps me understand the construction rather than just cutting a certain size. It helps in future sewing to know how to construct my own.

2. I love that I have the instructions stored on my computer. I can pull it up without pulling everything out of the folder and trying to figure out what I'm doing. It's neat and tidy. I also love that I can print off as many copies as I want in the future. With traditional patterns, you cut out the size you want and then it's done. I can use YCMT patterns in every size until my DD outgrows the pattern. To me, that makes the YCMT patterns a great deal.

3. I love that for the most part I don't have to re-think the YCMT patterns to make them boutique looking. They start out cute and boutiquey! Traditional patterns can be altered, of course, but that takes more brain power. I don't always want to do that.

So, that's my top 3! I say go for it!

Water soluable thread? I've never heard of it! Can you tell me more? Where do you find it? What does it look like? How much does it cost?

The picture of DD wearing the white with the funky flowers is the Dizzy Daisy bandanna halter and pants pattern. You only have to cut the pants part and then it comes together so fast. The pattern is marked for up to size 4, but DD is a size 6 and it fits her perfectly with room to move. I used three bandannas total at $.94 each. Not bad for the price also. The pattern is from YCMT. A good thing about this outfit is that DD can wear outside and I won't have to freak out about her getting it dirty because I can just make another one for $3.:rotfl2: :lmao:

I couldn't agree more about these patterns! Love that there is so much more detail in construction, and also some neat little tips and tricks that aren't included in most other mass produced patterns!

I am also intrigued by water soluable thread! Sounds like just what I need for certain projects!

Since I've never sewn before, do you think it would be best to get a nice little sewing machine used that doesn't have a million features. Someone is selling a 16 stitch singer on craigslist for $50 that normally sells for $100. It's only been used once. Is that a good deal?

Welcome! I think that would be a great machine to start out with. It will give you a chance to find out if you enjoy sewing and help you determine what features you would like most in a new machine. I say go for it!

Your kids look so cute in all their customs!! Thanks so much for sharing your trip pictures!!

Very cute! I really like the look of the frayed applique.

How do you do this ribbon work on the bottom of this? I have wanted to do this forever!!!

I think most people are using a serger to do this but Heather posted instructions on how she did it with her regular machine. I think she just made a fabric tube and gathered it down the middle then sewed over the gathering stitches. I need to read it again before I try it - LOL!

WOW!! You are multi-talented!! I am totally jealous of your bookcase.

YCMT QUESTION!OK, now that I have your attention, ( :) )I have a question that has probably been asked already, but I am too lazy to back and look :lmao: but if I buy a pattern on YCMT, and I don't have a printer, can I print it on someone else's printer? Or is it only accessible on my computer?

Oh, and also, princess cake creator... I think you did an excellent job!

WOW! Out standing job everyone! I just love it.

They now have a feature where they store every pattern you buy in what they call "my library" so you can log into YCMT wherever you are and pull it up and print it. :cool1:

Hello everyone, I see we have all been busy bees, sewing up a storm!:goodvibes

Lori,

You did the right thing for your child. Sometimes we as teachers do all we can do, but with so many kids, it is hard to catch the bullying going on. The principal should have stepped in, but seeing as nothing was changing, it is good that you moved her. That kind of bullying can really scar a child, and it is good you got her away from the situation. Kudos to you for being such a good mommy!!!

I have been nursing sick children, the stomach flu was running rampant through my house!:scared1: But, I think everyone is okay now. I will try to post some pics tonight of what I have made, if my models will cooperate. I found a cute top pattern, it is simplicity "That's so Raven". Very, very easy top, and is cute for the tween girl. Caity really likes it, so I guess I chose well!

I did manage to go to JoAnn's yesterday, and spent too much money!!!! 80 bucks! But, I did get some of that cute monkey fabric!:cool1:

OH Lori, this breaks my heart. I ran into a problem like this when my dd was in Kindergarten. So sad. My poor baby didn't know how to deal with it and was striking out violently at home, ( I know she struck out because she knew we would love her no matter what). Turns out this little boy had been picking on her and the teacher made her sit next to him. I spoke to the teacher, had her seat changed, then one month later the teacher decided to put them back together. I then went to the prinicpal and said I am not beyond pulling my child out of school and reporting mrs....soso to the board of education or whomever I needed to. I have friends that teach at my dds school and they were surprised that the teacher acted this way, apparantly no one ever spoke up before cause now we find out that other children in her class had the same problem. Result of conversation, we had DD switch teachers and it helped tremendously!!! . Best of luck to your dd at her new school. We as parents will go to the end of the earth and back for our childs well being. Shouldn't have to but we do.
Big hugs to you and your dd.
NOW GET SEWING FOR HER!!!! :woohoo: :cool1: :lmao:

I bought my 1st sewing machine today! Yay!! I have no clue how to use it  but I'm enthusiastic to learn! It's a Singer Simple machine. Very basic. I just love children's boutique clothes so much. I'd love to get good and make a little at home business out of it since I stay at home with my daughter. Does anyone know of any good online tutorials?

Well, I said that I probably wasn't going to sew anymore for my niece but I just finished The Incredibles outfit for her. She is having an Incredibles b'day party @ Chuck E Cheese the weekend after Easter and I made this as a surprise. I am also going to make her a Pink Panther outfit as part of her b'day present. If she doesn't wear these outfits, then I am not making anymore for her.

Anyways....

Here is my niece modeling her new outfit

Incredibles3.jpg

Trying to twirl -- she had to hang on b/c she nearly fell (she isn't the most coordinated child).

Incredibles2.jpg

Close-up of the applique.

Incredibles4.jpg

The applique did not turn out as well as I wanted but it will have to do b/c I AM NOT doing it over (especially if she isn't ever going to wear it again). When I got it out for her to try on she said "hey, I can be Violet Incredible". That made me feel better about it. When I first started doing the skirt, I thought the whole outfit was going to be a hideous mess and be too boyish but I think it turned out pretty cute and am pleased.

That's the same Machine I have and I love it. If you need a manual to it I have it in PDF form. YCMT.com has a learn how to sew tutorial on their website. You would have to purchase it, but all of the patterns on there are really detailed so I think that it would be worth it. Good Luck.

I love it. It turned out really cute. Is the skirt peiced together or is that striped fabric? If it's striped fabric where did you get it from? It is too cute.
