Disaster on Wonder - My Report

I'm glad I read this post as now at least I have a clue what to expect if I need to see the doctor. Thankfully we will be cruising in August, so possibly the norwalk virus won't be the first thing that comes to mind if I take ill. I have a very weak stomach so the chances I may get sick to my stomach or highly probable. Now I plan to combat it on my own. However ,that being said, with countless guests on board, how would the staff know if you ventured out of your cabin. Heck, I have intelligence enough to discern between a flu and upset stomach as I'm sure most people can so I would have greatly resented being confined to my cabin, especially if I could have enjoyed castaway cay. So, how would they have known if you flew the coup???????

Michelle,

They place a note on your key to the world card that you are ill and should be in your cabin. They also call to check on you frequently and if you dont answer they stop by to check in on you. They (at least to us) where very nice, bringing gatoraide, games, toys, movies, special treats...etc. To be honest I am sure that if we did "escape" that there isnt much they can do about it. But it is whats only fair to everyone on the ship, however not many people seem to agree with me on that part, but oh well. I hope that no one is sick on your trip. It can make things very hard.

Believe me....

You do not want to test the system if you are quarantined! When I was misdiagnosed, my card had a medical alert placed on it. I was called or visited several times a day to be sure I obeyed. I was also ...shall we say 'warned' there was a place they contain those passengers who disobeyed and another choice...your entire party to be put off at next island. Sad, but true.

Good policy if you are sick and disobey Mickey's rules....
entirely different if you are not. :(

Been there, done that, got the tshirt...

No way would I visit the medical center. Imagine a quarantine for a person in an interior cabin. You'd get to spend your Castaway Cay day looking at....ummm...the wall???

They should give back all money for the vow renewal. They made many mistakes.

Did you have trip insurance? Wouldn't that pay for the days you were confined?

I got the Norwalk Virus on our last night of the cruise, and I can tell you from experience, the last thing I wanted to do anyway was get out of bed. Would I go get medical attention if it happened again? I really don't know. I do think they should do re-evaluations of people that are sick, because it could be anything from different food not agreeing with you to being sea sick.

How long do they quarantine people if they no longer show symptoms? How long is a person contagious? I do know it is highly contagious, my whole family either got sick at the airport the next morning or on the drive home from the airport.

Another thing I learned about Norwalk is that I will affect people differently. While I felt horrible and pretty much spent the last night in our bathroom, my DH just felt achey and nauseous, and DD felt just as bad but only got sick in the car once. Both were fine later that evening, while I was sick for three days. Since this happened on the last day, it really didn't affect our trip much (except getting home was pure hell!!). I too wondered if trip insurance would cover any missed days (just in case for future cruises). It took alot of talking to get DH to agree to do the cruise again, but we loved it so much we are going twice in 2004.

IMO Disney needs to let people know what will happen if you are diagnosed with Norwalk so there are no surprises. It should be included with your cruise documents.

Rosemary123 you deserve compensation for all you were put through. What was suppose to be a special time was turned into a big dissapointment. As for the way you reacted, we were not there and have not walked in your shoes. If it happened to me, I'm sure I would have done and said things that I may regret later, but at the time I doubt I would have cared what people thought. I just hope Disney steps up and does something to make up for what you went though with all the renewal mistakes.

Keep us updated.

I wll let you know what Disney say as soon as I hear from them. Disney Fairy Tale weddings has passed it over to the Cruise Line to respond so has Cathy Ingles

The medical centre told me that quarantine is necessary for 48 hours after the last symptom. They gave me a medical certificate for insurance purposes but unfortunately our insurance does not cover this, but I understand some policies do, so it is worth checking it out.

Thank you all so much for your support, and whatever you are doing over the holiday - happy holidays!!
