Disaster on Wonder - My Report

P.S. eek40 - It always makes me laugh when people like your self express their opinions as if they are law. Who knew that the disboards had appointed a judge to access the behavior of others.

That is just rude. Eek has a right to express her opinion without a sarcastic characterization of her opinion (she made it clear it was HER OPINION) and I happen to agree with several points she made.

While I think that all of us agree that the vow renewal situation was a mess and DCL owes Rosemary compensation for that, and I too would have been upset about that and the Shutters error, there is no reason to scream at cast members and repeatedly yell about infecting others with Norwalk virus.
"I did go to immigration, and was angry, so I made a point of telling them at immigration and ohers that 'Disney had let me out to infect everyone with the Norwalk'.....I was just so angry and upset, I became very irate - I shouted I wasn't going to stay, he can sort it out, anway I didn't want to infect him with Norwalk, even tho Disney had said Iwas allowed out before my 48 hours quarantine was up!!!..... demanded to see Brent - who of course wasn't there - this only added to my frustration - and I started shouting - the poor young lady behind the desk was almost in tears - I know it wasn't her fault directly. I went to get some coffee telling everyone on the way that I was infecting the ship..."

Your situation just doesn't justify upsetting innocent bystanders who did not cause your problems. That was probably very upsetting for the families which you told that you were infecting them with Norwalk. Sorry if someone else disagrees, but I would hope in retrospect you could see that your behavior towards the other guests in particular was inappropriate.

.................::yes::

You poor thing. I would be outraged as well. I know that Disney is top of the line, but really the way they treated you was, well... I can't even find the right words. I hope that you do write to Disney and maybe even print out a copy of what you wrote here. I have only been married 6 years but if it was my 30 year, you bet I would expect a lot. I hope that you get all that you have coming and let this be a lesson to all of us, if you think it is just a 3 hour bug, KEEP IT TO YOURSELF!!! Obviously if you think it is more just stay in your cabin. Good Luck to you.

Judging by the # of responses seen here on this thread alone, it's safe to say very few would seek out medical care on the ship if ill, based on how Disney reacts since the Norwalk outbreak last year. They need to really take the time to make a proper diagnosis, to be sure a quarantine is necessary. Follow up is necessary too. It's ironic that Disney's policies to protect passengers from spreading illness onboard could really work against them in the long run....If no one goes to Medical because of fear of an unwarranted quarantine & they are truly ill/contagious, Disney could have a real problem on their hands & not realize it until it's out of control. Yikes!

Rosemary, I am truly sorry to hear of your vow renewal & cruise problems. Sounds like Brent & others dropped the ball at your expense and DCL should hear about what went wrong... The problems with the ceremony, reception & Shutters could have been avoided with better attention to detail and proper communication. Sounds like Brent was busy with his party of 550- that's not right. You deserved to get the experience you paid for & expected. Nothing more, but nothing less...

Congraulations on your 30th Wedding anniversary! I'm sure you & your DH will laugh about this sometime soon, as you can't make this stuff up! Humor does conquer all, sometimes it takes awhile for it to surface! At least you had the comfort of your family around you during the ordeal, so they can laugh along with you too! It will make for great family gathering conversation for years to come!

Good luck & I hope you fare well addressing your concerns with DCL management. I think you deserve to give them a second chance to get the vow renewal & all it entails right, perhaps at their expense. The first time it was truly at yours....

I would just like to make a point to those who feel my actions were innapropriate in regard to me telling others on the ship I was infectious.

In retrospect, it was not the kindest thing I have ever done, but lets not forget - it was Disney, that insisted I came out before my quarantine was up, to suit them - not the other passengers.

If they were genuinely concerned about other passengers they would not have insisted I 'came out' for immigration. If immigration had been on the day my illness started, I can almost guarantee they would have insisted I went, whether I was showing symptoms or not, irrespective of how many people I was 'mingling' with in Wavebands.

The point I am trying to make is - it was Disney who gave me permission to come out and 'infect' the ship, and others - they didn't care, they just wanted me off the ship.

No, it wasn't the other passengers fault I was in such a dilema, but I felt they needed to know that Disney was prepared to put others at risk, and I did indeed tell them that Disney had insisted I come out before time.

I was happy, well not happy, to stick to their rules, but what did it for me, on top of the problems with the vow renewal, was when they refused to listen to any contingency plan and then they said, as you already know, 'but you must go to immigration'. I just couldn't believe it!

Another point I would like to clear up, I WAS NOT repeat, NOT, screaming around the ship as some have interpreted, but I was very angry, the people I shouted at were, the man at Shutters when the photographs were wrong, the lady at guest services when she told me Brent was not there and then Brent himself in our cabin.

If I was 'screaming' like some have said - wow! they would have been justified in locking me up!!

When I spoke with the lady in immigration she told me 'you are justified in your anger madam'!!!

At the end of the day, Disney were more concerned about their ship being infected and them losing alot of money if it had to go to dry dock because of it - not the other passengers.

Another problem I had too, was they told me that whilst I was in quarantine all room service, water, soft drinks and some alcoholic drinks were complimentary - but they couldn't even do that right - as there were charges on our bill that should not have been there - but yes they did put it right - but it shouldn't have happened in the first place.

And then to top it all - we paid off about 50% of our bill in cash and travellers cheques at Guest services and we have just received our Visa statement - and yes - they have taken the money out of there as well!! So in effect we have paid DOUBLE for our experience. So that means another stressful time, on top of everything else, trying to sort that out and get our money back that they owe us!!

INCOMPETENT OR WHAT!!!

Come on Disney what is happening sort yourselves out!

Rosemary

Rosemary....DCL told you it would cost $750 for their technician to run your slide show????? Wow.....I had a slide show put together for our DD 18's H.S. graduation on a DVD put to music. We were cruising soon after her graduation and I decided as one of her gifts to present her with the slide show on board the Magic. I was able to reserve the ESPN club for a private party for about 1.5 hours and DCL played our DVD of the slide show on all the screens in the ESPN club...even on the big screen!!! We reserved the room before our cruise. I had called DCL and told them what I wanted to do and was given a land coordinator and then assigned a coordinator onboard. I had originally would have liked to reserve the Buena Vista Theatre and show it on that screen, but DCL said no.

My DD was blown away and there was not a dry eye in the house. It was pics of her from birth through H.S. graduation. DCL only charged us $50 for the technician fee!!! We did not have to have our own laptop. We were travelling with a large group of friends and family and no one knew why we invited them all to the club at 10:00 am. I had ordered pastries and coffe/tea/soda/bottled water and that was extra....I think about $100 or so.

DCL was supposed to put a sign at the entrance that the club was closed for a private party, but they forgot and we had cruise passengers coming in the club and sitting down and watching our DD's slide show...they must have been a bit confused wondering what they were watching. People were also taking the food/drink items from the table thinking that they were complimentary to all cruise passengers. We politely had to tell people that were for a private party.

I went to guest service after the party and told them about the sign issue and took half the cost of the food/beverages off our bill.

I just don't understand the discrepancy in pricing for a slide show. You $750 and me $50. This was on the August 3. 2002 sailing of the Magic.

But, the look on my DD and husband's (surprise to him too) faces was priceless.

I feed so bad you had such a hard and disappointing time with DCL.

Rosemary,
you have no reason to apologise for the way you behaved on the ship...i am quite sure i would have done the very same thing in your shoes.....i probably would have been much worse....

please let us know if DCL responds in any way...
although they're notiously bad about responding once the incident is over....but it will be interesting to see if they do anything....

I'm sorry, Rosemary, I just can't condone it.

To me, it looks that you were looking to let off steam and let everyone know you were ticked off.

From here, it didn't look like you ever had the other passenger's best interests at heart.

No matter what DCL did, in the end it was YOU who made the scene.

Being angry is one thing. But being right doesn't give you the right to be rude.

But I also echo what everyone else said - DCL, planning and execution-wise, did wrong by you and you do deserve some sort of satisfaction from them.

I wish you all the best.

It would be wonderful to never react in a negative way during lifes trials and tribulations!

So true.

But what exactly were you "reacting" to? The other passengers? They didn't do anything to you.

The way you decided to handle being angry was more pre-planned than reactionary by telling people you saw outside your room that you had the virus.

I'm sorry if you can't see that, I'm sorry if you can only see that the reaction was justified by the action.

Perhaps others will act accordingly in the future.

I hope they refund you every penny you spent. That is an outrage!

Just a thought here.....while I agree compensation is due to rosemary for the vow renewal issues. But has anyone considered that "full refunds" or "free cruises" all cost us in the end? Slowly prices increase to cover issues like these. Just wondering if anyone has thought about that.

Aimee

Aimee, I have to disagree with you. Disney rarely, if ever, gives full refunds or free cruises. So, if they were to refund the cost of the cruise, in full or in part, it would have no bearing on what they charge in the future. If that were the case, we would all be paying for the canceled cruise from last year.

Also, whenever I wish something for someone else, I do not sit down and try to figure out if it would be detrimental to myself.

Rosemary, I hope you get a full refund for the cost of the photos, vow renewal ceremony and a partial refund of your cruise. Also, DCL should offer you some sort of stateroom credit to encourage you to try DCL again. I would take the refund money and arrange another ceremony, closer to home. You need some happy memories with your elderly parents and a ceremony would do just that.

Good point Dreamer04.....I didnt really think about the point you made at the beginning. After 6 years with a major airline in customer service , I guess in part I am so used to hearing "free trips" for "X problem" that I am using that as my basis. But I agree with you. Thanks for pointing it out to me!

Aimee. same here. I worked in customer service for over twenty years. Refunds or free merchandise are, sometimes, the only way a consumer can be compensated for poor service.

When we buy a product, a cruise in this case, with it comes expections and implied responsibilities. Sometimes our expectations are not met. Compensation is due when a company does not neet it responsibilites, through it's own actions, or those of their employees. I think that's the case here.

But, personally, I can't stand people who kick up a fuss and demand refunds for things like the weather!

I don't want to change the subject but I really wish the title of this thread could be changed. While I'm sure it really was a disaster for Rosemary, everytime I see "DISASTER ON WONDER" I have a moment of panic for my beautiful ship that I'm boarding next week! LOL

Sorry for the interuption, continue on.....

actually the title of the thread is what got me to read it, and i'm very glad i did...
i now know NEVER to go to the medical center, under ANY circumstances...

Had this happened to me I would have been screaming my head off. Just being confined to my cabin for a little intestinal distress is bad enough but all their mishaps made it worse. I hope you get some satisfaction!

I'm glad I read this post as now at least I have a clue what to expect if I need to see the doctor. Thankfully we will be cruising in August, so possibly the norwalk virus won't be the first thing that comes to mind if I take ill. I have a very weak stomach so the chances I may get sick to my stomach or highly probable. Now I plan to combat it on my own. However ,that being said, with countless guests on board, how would the staff know if you ventured out of your cabin. Heck, I have intelligence enough to discern between a flu and upset stomach as I'm sure most people can so I would have greatly resented being confined to my cabin, especially if I could have enjoyed castaway cay. So, how would they have known if you flew the coup???????
