I was interested in learning more about DVC so my wife and kids and I went to a presentation. I have to say I was dissapointed with the agent. Came across as arrogant and told us the minimum buy in was 160 points...bit too much for us at this time. Also "forgot" to give us our gift card so had to go back and ask for it...awkward.
Anyways when I was back at the hotel I talked to a rep in the lobby and she told me we could buy in at 100 points. Enough for us as we will be going ever 2 years.
So when I called the agent back he said technically we can buy in at 100 but figured it wasn't enough for us and was still reluctant to give more info.

Anyways looking at possibly buying resale points...any advice on that option?

Thanks

As you know, sales agents come across differently to differt potential customers. My suggestion is to keep on researching the DVC rules and many owners will help you with your search.

Pop over to the DVC operations forum. Resale vs direct is a question asked all the time.

FWIW you can request a different guide if you decide to buy direct from Disney.

As mentioned, some guides are great and some aren't so great. They might have dismissed you as a not so serious buyer. This happens a lot in the commission sales industry (car sales, real estate, etc) and for a lot of reasons....some sales people tend to profile a lot (age, income, etc). It also depends on the types of questions you ask, etc. Sorry this happened, sounds like he was trying to get rid of you and move on to another customer.

There are some good deals in resale, depending on what you are looking for. Lots of information on these boards to help you out, spend some time reading. Also be careful where you buy, if you are set on staying at a certain place, you are best not depending on the 7 month window.

And if you are not happy with your guide ask for a different one. Sure it's awkward, but believe it or not Disney wants you to be happy with your guide too.

But first of all check out resale.

i own both, 1 from dvc and one from a resale. you can buy resales for as little as 26 points, so i would probably do a little digging online, and you should be able to find the points - with some serious watching of the contracts - for half of what disney wanted you to pay for it. :)

We bought resale from The Timeshare Store, sponsor of this board. They were very pleasant, extremely knowledgable and made the whole process very very easy.

I never got the $15 gift card. I didn't think about it until after I was gone, so I went to a DVC kiosk. They looked up my info and said that there was a note that I received it. I looked very thoroughly through my DVC info, and it was nowhere to be found. Awkward. Very awkward!!!

I bought in through The Timeshare Store, and now buying another small contract through them. They are very great to work with!!!

I am sorry to hear about your experience. Feel free to email The Timeshare Store, Inc.® at sales@dvcstore.com and one of your associate can email or mail you the brochure and add you to our distribution list so when new listings become available you will be notified. Of course, feel free to ask them any questions and, of course, you can call us as well (1-800-550-6493) and we are open until 9 during the week and 6 on the weekends.

Buy resale, save money, and spend a little of it to send that DVC timeshare salesman a cheap Christmas card telling him what you decided.

The quality of new Guides has become worse during the last year as Disney has changed their business model. Many of their new hires are now from other timeshare companies and some from the remote locations are contracted employees.

Depending on where you buy can often change the discount or incentive offered. One deal at the Preview Center, and different deal while on a cruise and yet a different deal if your Guide works from home.

Once you make contact with a Guide, they are assigned to you unless you request the change. Since the OP has made contact, even if they buy resale, they will have the same Guide that they toured with.

I would say continue your research. We bought direct, but I hear great things about resales. But, either way, I would request a different guide so that you don't have to deal with this person anymore. There are some fantastic guides out there, just keep looking!

I'm sorry you were disappointed. Even if you don't want to request a new guide right now, I would report the matter to DVC. As a matter of quality control, they should know when their guides are not acting as Casey on the DVC resort TV channel promised.

:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl: - that is some great advice!

OP - request a different guide whether you choose resale or direct. While the guide's sales tactics/attitude may work for him sometimes, I personally wouldn't want to deal with him in the future. If you're not sure the direction you want to take regarding DVC spend a lot of time on the boards gathering info and asking questions - DIS'ers are more honest and won't feed you the run-around.

I totally agree. Seems like from 1996 to 2004 they were never (strong word but I will use it) interested in hiring associates from other resorts. They wanted to teach them the Disney way from the start. Things have changed big time.

To the OP... If you're going to request a new guide and would like a recommendation, let me know. My wife and I took the DVC tour a few weeks ago and were very happy with our guide. He was friendly, seemed knowledgeable, and didn't put any pressure on us. Plus, he mentioned that he had worked for WDW since the 80s, so I'm assuming he's not one of the newer timeshare types mentioned in other posts in this thread.

Ultimately, we decided not to purchase at this time. But, if we were to change our mind, I'd have no hesitation to contact our guide and use him for the purchase.
