Disappointed in wi-fi service/losing wired service

I was at kidani village and it did not ask for my room number or anything. Just gave me a terms of service that i had to agree to every couple of hours.

I was told wired would be left, who knows anymore. :confused3

Being a techie on the side, this only makes sense. A network is a network. It's only hardware, whether it's wired or wireless. A wireless network still needs to be connected to a wired network somewhere. Whether it's an old T1 line, coaxial or fiber optic.

If they are going the coaxial rout to connect routers everywhere, they can STILL use the cat 5 connections in every room. They can just keep the the hubs/switches connected to the incoming line. It really has nothing to do with service providers or contracts. I would be surprised if they disconnected it. I don't see any downside to leaving it connected until technology makes it obsolete, and that won't happen for a while. I have a rooted Android device with wireless tethering unlocked for free, and never without access, but using my own router on a wired network is almost always faster.

Been here since Saturday and the wireless has been terrible. Just plugged into the old wired port and it works fine. Sorry I didn't bring the router I usually do to set up my own wireless.:confused3

It is possible to have your laptop plugged into a wired connection, and use the computer as a wireless hotspot. I don't know how do it with windows, and it defeats the purpose if you want to use your laptop wirelessly, but if you have a smartphone or tablet, than it can be worth looking up. I do it with my Mac at work.

Yes, the free wifi worked that way, but when I tried using the wired internet, it asked for my information. Never gave them my number, so I don't know what would have happened after that.

I am uploading photos to Photobucket tonight at BWV and the speed is 8 or 9 KB/s. How pathetic.

8 or 9 Kbps?? Really, K??? That's worse than dial-up. I can get around 150-300Kbps with my cell phone over 3G.

BWV seems to be having some issues. It's the most often complained about resort that I've seen regarding wireless.

Yes, k. Took an hour to upload a few photos. Not acceptable.

Just returned from a week stay at OKW (building 49) and no issues with the wireless speed or signing on with both an iPad and Dell laptop for the entire stay. The wife was also using her Kindle Fire. Also never had to register anything to use it, just every few hours I had to click to agree to the terms.

Yay - I'll be there for Easter! (and I will be at Beach Club, but the Resort not Villas, on Saturday so I will try and remember to report back)

I'll be bringing my 4G MiFi in case I have to do "real work".
Turns out Comcast hosed my home business connection, so I'm using the MiFi from home tonight as well!

We were at BWV for the marathon and same thing. Super slow connecting to wifi on my Iphone. Half the time I could not connect at all.

I'm at OKW now and the connection is so slow I can barely post. I used the Wifi in October when it first started at BWV and it was great so I didn't pack my router....wrong.....I wanted to post last night but after watching the green waiting line trying to get into the disboards I gave up. It's like having dialup again. I move over to BWV on Monday so I hope it gets better. I feel like I have my aol dial up again.

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings but BWV seems to be having the most problems with wi-fi. If you encounter problems call tech support right away. They will try to help, though it didn't seem to do much good for me. And we had an access point in our room.

The boards have been terribly slow - for what seems like days for me. It might not be the connection at OKW, someone up the thread said it was working great very recently.

At AKV we found it easy to get on, but flaky at best. Though as time went on we decided there may be a method to the madness.

My guess is that there's some type of filtering going on, and if you try to do any kind of streaming at all ... or what looks like streaming to the severs ... it just shuts you down.

So ... no Netflix, Pandora, etc. And to some extent I can understand that being valid.

But if I tried to access YouTube, or even some uploaded private videos - of the trip - it would flake out. Cutting the connection or refreshing the DHCP lease (sorry for being a bit techie) gets things working again for a short period of time.

I couldn't even update the apps on my iPad! But just browsing the web, checking e-mail etc. worked fine.

Maybe it's really just a flaky flaky connection, but I'd have to be convinced.

The WiFi seems to be a little "quirky" all over. I was at BWV in October and had no problems at all, but over New Year's at OKW (Miller's Road, if it matters) the spotty connection was driving me up the wall. This is with both a Mac laptop and an iPad. Wish they'd even things out a bit...

We moved to the BWV on Monday and the WiFi service here is great. Much better than the service we were getting at OKW. I have not had any problems at all and much faster.

When we stayed at OKW the week after Christmas through New Years we found the service to be consistently inconsistent. When it was poor I passed it off as network congestion due to a lack of enough bandwidth. Otherwise it was adequate.

Not DVC, but I thought I'd give my opinion as well after our weekend trip.

We were at Beach Club - club level on the 5th floor. Wifi seemed very good in the lounge (which is on the villas side of the building) and basically didn't work at all in our room at the other side of the building facing Crescent Lake. The staff said that it was still a work in progress and that they heard another repeater was going to be added to extend the service in the hallway.

We had to turn off the wireless on our phones and just use 3G to get any Internet access at all.

Edited: After seeing another post about needing the Internet to work, that reminded me of what I forgot to mention.
There was no wired Internet connection in either of our BC rooms. When talking to the concierge CM about it, he said that when they put the wireless in, the company that had the wired stuff came in and took it all out. So we were not even able to use our Airport Express.
