I will be in Universal in a few weeks at the Portofino. Monday I finish aggressive chemo and radiation and will probably need a scooter for shortness of breath in the parks. I was told concierge would help me at check-in but I doubt I will need it for other then the parks. Does anyone know how I would set this up (a rental) and how much they cost per day?
TIA!

The concierge will arrange the rental for you. Be sure to call in advance as they do run out. The charge is something like $45 the first day and $35 additional days.

Will they arrange something where I pick up and deliver at the park or would I be better off taking to and from the hotel and taking it on the boat. I am afraid I will plow into someone. :scared1:
I am sure I will need it in the parks as I am anemic right now and radiation has caused a temporary lung inflammation, walking is difficult. This happens to be a window of opportunity for the family to go in case the other shoe drops, which is why we didn't wait for me to get stronger. We will follow up with a more relaxing 3 night Dis cruise where we can all get the Disney fix also! :dance3:

the boats can accommodate one wheelchair at a time.

i would call the companies that have the rental business in orlando and work with them.
they will deliver it to the hotel and pick it up when your rental time is over.
if you rely on the concierge to find the rental for you, it might not be at the best price you could book on your own.

you can google to find the companies or use allear or mousesavers sites on the web.

it is cheaper and they will come to you if there are any problems with the ECV.

for practice, go to walmart and try out their EVC they have for customers use.
that way you will have a better handle on using them when you go to universal.

Do they not rent them in the parks? I think that is the only place I will need one, especially as you just said they can be burdensome on the boats.

Yes...you can rent either a wheelchair or ECV at either park. Here is the price chart. It's not a very good picture but for a wheelchair...you have to pay a deposit and have a photo I.D.

If you follow the link in my signature to the disABILITIES FAQs thread, you will find links and phone numbers for Orlando area wheelchair/ECV rental companies that have been used and are recommended by DIS posters.

Also, post #9 of that thread has information specifically about Universal, including a link to their 'Rider's Guide' for people with disabilities.

i'm glad you posted that info, Sue.

It's good information for the OP.

Again thanks. I am not looking for any special perks. I will be unable to walk more then several yards as my lungs are temporarily inflamed from radiation and I have emphysema. I am going with the mindset cancer free :thumbsup2
I want to park the scooter outside of the rides, restaurants etc and return it at the exit. Is this doable? I can walk, just become very short of breath quickly and will be anemic still from chemo.

It turned out I was hospitalized for a week prior to the trip and needed the scooter at all times. Concierge reserved it at $45 day 1 and $ 35 each additional day. It was very easy to handle. Though I asked to be near the elevator my room 1328 at RPR was as far from the elevator as possible so I needed it in the resort. Also if you reserve at the park and don't get it by 11 AM it is no longer available. We walked to the parks at all times so didn't need to get on the bus or boat with it.

Thanks for all your help!

Thanks for coming back and advising us.

hope you had an awesome time at the parks.
