So everyone is raising prices just as new show inventory will decline greatly with the strikes. This is not a recipe for success for any streamer.

They may lose a whole bunch of subs who just never come back. If there's nothing new to watch, might as well just watch FAST and once they get used to that free option, winning them back will be very hard.

Now if FAST does grow quickly, guess who has increased eyeballs? ABC and many of the other cable networks Disney owns. Hmm, another variable thrown in the mix...
It is still way under-priced for the friction-less ease of streaming and content library access. But cancelling is also very easy.

I don't know what people see in Netflix. They're the most expensive. They've lost practically every major movie studio. So, it's not blockbuster films people are watching. It's B and C tier films and rerun TV dramas like Outlander and Breaking Bad.

Outside of their own content, like Stranger Things, Bridgerton, Wednesday, Ozark, The Witcher, etc., it's mostly shows from international markets that they've dubbed in English.

I guess because there's so much variety (even though most of it is crap) or is it just name recognition?

I'd rather subscribe to Hulu or HBO Max.

I mean, their original series are pretty strong for sure, but yeah, the film content has declined considerably. For me, it wouldn't be worth it. I'll have to subscribe when Stranger Things or Wednesday come back since I think borrowing is now off the table - but I won't keep it too long. That is the nice thing about streaming though, you don't have to get locked in. I am locked in to Disney+ though, but that's a given.

Looking at my Disney DVD collection of movies covering the 70 years of classics, from 20,000 Leagues to Pirates makes me very happy that these great films are mine to watch at any time. Share with the family too. Make a movie night of Pollyanna and or Old Yeller. Do not depend on streaming services to keep old films available at a reasonable cost.
LOL. I have a bunch of them on VHS, and they still work.
Exactly what I do.
By the time you find the old yeller disc/vhs and then remember what TV input your vcr/dvd player is on and then find the remote and then rewind the vhs and then skip the FBI warnings and then explain why the movie doesn't take up the whole screen and why it looks so old, it will be time for the family to head home. And then grandma will be mad that grandpa. Rinse repeat Lol. I am joking. Glad you guys can have those family nights.

Yeah, I liked my physical media too, but a nice, 4K transfer can't be beat. Disney is actually doing some more 4K masters too, like Cinderella. That will be nice!

That's definitely where they shine, but people tend to stay subscribed to Netflix, at least based on my experience with family and friends.

In other rumors,

Now, a Coco dinner show? What's next a Jungle Cruise themed swimming pool? A 20,000 Leagues slide?

The friction-less ease of digital or streaming can't be beat. Takes up no physical space and I can just say 'Hey, Siri, play 'Old Yeller' on Disney+' or a quick search and you are watching.

Now if you don't know what you want to watch? You can get a bit of nostalgia bc scrolling through Netflix or Disney+ reminds of the days you went to rent a movie and walked around for an hour trying to decide. Or when you scrolled through the channels on cable endlessly trying to find something to watch Lol.

Ha ha, yeah! Sometimes I get "lost in the menu" - looking for something quick to watch and 30 minutes later I've just been looking at thumbnails! 🤣

they have the comfort shows that people throw on in the background or have seen and know they like. My wife loves Gilmore girls and threw that on constantly when we had Netflix.

I’m more of a max and Hulu person since Hulu is great for next day episodes and max has some great shows.

Disney plus and Hulu are under priced, especially compared to netflix. I think Disney plus came in to low when they came to market and because of that are taking forever to get it priced correctly.

Netflix just reported earnings and made 8.2B in revenue and 1.5B in net income. Last quarter Disney had revenue of 5.5B. With a few more price increases, I think Disney will get there but idk if they’ll ever reach Netflix’s margins.

On pace for $7B in operating income in FY 23... 26% YoY. What are Wall Streets expectations? I don't follow the stock close enough.
I think it beat on bottom line but the top line revenue growth for the reported quarter and the next we’re both lower, though not by much, than expectations. Part of that is due to lower arpu, which they attributed to extra users being added to accounts.

They also have over a 50 PE, so they are priced pretty aggressively on growth.

I too find Netflix to have a limited appeal. We got rid of our subscription years ago. We don't miss it either. It's way too expensive, and so many of the other streamers give their product away for free.

With advertising, right?

With advertising, right?
Yes, and no.... Max we get by being AT&T customers with no ads for example. Apple TV+ often has free subscriptions available. That isn't even mentioning services like Pluto or Freevee which are actually free with ads all the time.

Even our Ad-Free Disney Plus costs us $2.99 per month via hub... not free but way cheaper than Netflix.

Some history of tv advertising time allocations. You can really tell if you have some old TV shows on DVD compared to newer shows.

https://www.quora.com/Are-there-more-commercials-on-television-now-than-20-years-ago

In 2019: 18- 20 minutes of advertising per one-hour TV show… and 10 minutes per half-hour TV show

In the early 90s: 15 minutes per one-hour… and 8 minutes per half-hour

In the early 80s: 12 minutes per one-hour… and 6 minutes per half-hour

The mid-1960s: 7 - 10 minutes per one-hour… and any show less than an hour was usually “brought to you by…” - when the entire half-hour was sponsored by a single brand like Marlboro cigarettes, etc.

Now that would be very interesting! Perhaps a Coco dinner show would just serve Mexican food, huh?

It wouldn't surprise me that it would be Mexican food. That's become a big trend with some of the other cruise lines like Virgin offering a dedicated upscale Mexican restaurant. Having a cool Coco musical event (similar to how Frozen is now on the Wish) sounds fun and popular.
