Yes, but good movies (good storytelling) such as Tom Gun Maverick, Mario, Oppenheimer, etc. still make a lot of money. Movies today no longer appeal to the general audience. People are tired of what Hollywood is producing…it obvious what they are selling. So people are boycotting and waiting on word of mouth. If it is really good then they go to theater.

The thing those movies have in common, when they released there were next to no people who had their streaming services so the way to see it was in theaters. Masses aren’t tying Universal/Illumination to Peacock, and Paramount+ didn’t have a ton of subs but that grew after Maverick and subsequently led to Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning falling flat.

There is a shift in the way people see movies today but good storytelling will get them back. Unfortunately, Hollywood has to change their focus so that majority will go to theaters. Right now, they are killing theaters based on the product (which is garbage) they are releasing. The people have spoken.
50% less domestic tickets will be sold this year vs 2002. Box office will likely not be the metric used to determine success going fwd. Hours watched or something will over take as they try and find eyeballs for advertisers to make up for less and less box office.

Maverick, Avatar and Barbie will turn out to be false hopes for theatre survival. I am sure there will be other $billion films but they will become more and more rare.

I 100% believe if you make great content, people will show up. Tell a great story, stop focusing on messages and agendas and tell a flipping great story. People want to be entertained and not lectured to, it’s really that simple.

100% guarantee you you make a movie right now where Luke Skywalker is back and the real Luke not the loser in TLJ and it will make a billion dollars.

Bring back the butt kicking Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor = Billion dollars guaranteed.

It’s not hard, you just can’t make cat lady movies like the Marvels and expect to make money. I told everyone on here months ago that The Marvels would flop, and guess what it did. That’s not what the marvel audience wants. Go rehire John Favreau and pay him to make you a Marvel Movie again. Stop hiring obscure directors who have done nothing on this level because of their race and gender. Hire the best people period. I don’t care male or female or what race……..hire the best period.

That is not true at all. This was just last year! I do agree streaming has changed the game big time but good story telling/entertaining will get people in the theater. If word of mouth is good (not reviews on RottenTomatoes - bought and paid for by studios) people will go.

Dead Reckoning is an outlier but I enjoyed it. I love the movies but I am very selective what to see based on todays pushy agenda. Disney is getting destroyed by it.

Paramount+ had a global subscriber base of 43M when Maverick was in theaters. It’s now close to 80M. Can see the hit taken by movies released this year.

Peacock had a subscriber base of 24M when Mario released and 28M when Oppenheimer released. Easy way to see why streaming hasn’t drastically impacted Universal/Illumination/Dreamworks films.

People cast stones at the studios from all sorts of directions, but in the end, this is the reality:

It is a better experience to watch a 4K movie on your 72-inch TV in your living room. And you have more great choices than ever, for a low price, especially compared to going to the movies in person.

Unless a movie is something that somehow really moves the cultural needle or has a built-in audience or huge director, the odds are stacked against it.

People are on their screens more than ever -- YouTube, TikTok, streaming services, video games, Internet, social media -- and all this is eroding the time or interest in going to the movies.

It is just a different time

I’ve said this before but I had no idea when or where Mario would show up on streaming while it was in theaters. It doesn’t have the same brand connection in that respect.

(as it turned out, it was Peacock, and not only that, apparently it’ll be on Netflix next month)

Yes, same with the Hunger Games prequel. We had a decision on which movie to go see this weekend: Wish or the Hunger Games prequel. Well, Wish will be on Disney+ eventually. No idea when the Hunger Games prequel will be on a streaming platform and we just rewatched the whole series with DD13. Maybe we'll work in Wish next weekend but the further away it gets, the more likely we just wait till it is released on Disney+. The movie going experience is expensive. $8-$15 per ticket. $20-$40 for concessions. It has to be worth it now to go and if streaming options are coming soon, it will be an easy choice to just wait.

Mario is the best-selling video game franchise of all time, so you wonder why it took them so long to cash in on putting him in a movie.

Meanwhile, they have made dozens of Pokemon movies, although only six made it to the big screen in the U.S.

Wow! That will have an impact but people still want to get out of the house to see a good film. I have a nice setup at home (12 speakers, 85” TV, and amps) for movies but my wife and I will race to the theater for an awesome movie. Unfortunately, word of mouth (including social media - YouTube) has impacted on what people will see in theater.

Studios need to change direction…fast but it will a couple of years to see the changes. :(

Correct, general masses aren’t connecting Universal/Dreamworks/Illumination to Peacock and they still license plenty out to other streamers.

Warner also skirts around this because it’s all under Max and it’s not a quick connection. So you get a hit like Barbie to happen still.

Paramount had Maverick last year and because of the increase in subs had a drop this year

Avatar got pushed out under the Fox branding and succeeded and was licensed to places other than D+.

Ticket sales on pace to be 30% lower than 2019, folks aren’t racing to the theaters as much anymore. Ticket sales have been on a downward trend since the early 2000s.

I partially agree with you, but not completely. Make a great movie and I will still go to the theater. The next Batman I will go see at the movies guaranteed. Make a decent Superman movie, and I will do see it. Bring Iron Man back, and I am there early for the first showing time. Make I decent Star Wars movie and not the ST hot garbage and I will be there with a vintage Star Wars T shirt on.

Make a good sequel to the franchises I love, and I will be there day one. It must be good and not hot garbage (i.e.,Disney Star Wars ST).

Screw this! All movie theaters around the world should be closed down and demolished, because it’s over! People have become streaming-obsessed couch potatoes, who I bet will never go out to any place ever again. The box office is dead!

All the comments here about movie theatres dying is driving me to make statements like this, but it isn’t true!

Regarding Cost Controls - actors and directors are overpaid just like athletes.

Tom Cruise made $100 million for Top Gun Maverick. While in this case they created a blockbuster that was actually pretty good, now every actor thinks they deserve $100 million for 1 job. With that the costs are passed along to the consumer with increased ticket prices or the theaters have to take less of a cut/raise other prices.

marketing budgets are also way out of line with what's needed.

Combine all these things with a declining audience and it's why theaters are failing.

If everyone took a 50 percent pay cut, they'd still be rich and the theaters could cut prices 25%..... but the theaters would just pocket the extra money instead.

We live in a get rich quick society. no one including Disney believes in the long game like they used to.
