Hello,
I'm still pretty new to the DIS boards. Actually, I'm pretty new to the whole forum thing in general. Someone had suggested this site to me because I was hoping to meet some other adults to play VMK with. (Some of the young kids just drive me crazy)
I put Dis Member on my signature tag in the game. But my question is, should I take it off? I was reading the secret handshake post, and realized that you are all mostly a long time group of friends. I don't want you all to think I'm trying to pretend to be part of your inner circle. I was just looking to meet new friends in my age group.
I'm really bad with words. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

I would hope that DIS has not become that ( an inner circle ) ! DIS has and will always be about gathering people together that have one thing in common and that is our love for Disney! Please do not let these recent events discourage you from interacting in this community!

Welcome to the Dis Roxanne!!

You certainly may continue to keep DIS in your VMK signature! Please dont allow these secret DIS handshakes and exclusionary tactics scare you away from a great group of people found here on the DIS!

I have not commented on those posts but I will here, the DIS has always been a very friendly place. We dont allow personal attacks and we allow you to speak your mind. IMHO a secret handshake or secret password is not necessary. I know who the DIS people are. Anyone who comes to these boards on a regular basis knows that also.

Dis is a great group of friends, just keep it in the signiture and come and hang out. The easiest way to do this is try to hang out in one of the rooms where the dis meets. You will always be welcome as we are helpful to each other.

You are always welcome at the surf spot....

The hand shake is an idea to protect yourself from bad traders that like to scam...

I think you will enjoy hanging out and having some fun...Give it a try...

Roxane,

Wow, I hate the fact that you are feeling left out. :sad1: Please do not feel like you need to take Dis out of your signature. It is such a great way to meet others who visit these boards.

I have been around for a long time, but look at my post count. You have almost caught up to me! :rotfl2: ( I have been such a lurker :rotfl: )

I think the other post is just trying to find a way to prevent bad trades, but that may never be 100% possible. I don't think it means to make people feel left out.

If you, or any other newer Dis, see me in the game, please say "Hi" and I would love to be added to your friends list!

Don't get me wrong. I think you are all very nice. I just don't want to have something in my signature that I shouldn't. I guess I'm asking if only the long term members should have Dis Member.
I wasn't going to leave or anything, I just want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong.

By no means are you doing something wrong! If you are proud to be part of something that loves Disney like we do then by all means advertise! Look at my pic! I can not stand the color lime green but still wore it to DLR!

Edit- BTW lime green is the official color of DIS!

You are certainly not!!

Please keep Dis in your signature! There are no exclusive clubs on this board. Don't let a few scare the many. All are welcome. Wear your Dis and be proud.

Hi there :)

As the person who wrote about someone having "Dis" in their signature being equal to a secret handshake, I was merely making a point in the context of THAT thread. Someone had reported being ripped off by a Dis member. All I meant was that seeing the word "Dis" is no guarantee that the person is honest. ALL it means is that they know of, or participate in, these message boards.

You have no reason to remove it from your signature. You're here posting, right? That does make you a Dis member :) Keep it in your VMK signature and don't give it another thought! :flower:

And by the way, I was NOT trying to *scare* anyone, and I'm quite surprised to see what I said in an entirely different thread, mentioned here as if I was trying to offend our newest Dis members. I still stand by what I said in that thread, within the context of the subject of that thread. Geez why do I feel the need to explain MYSELF now? LOL :confused3

EDITED TO ADD: Ok, I just saw a different (new) thread that I think Roxanne is referring to, where they really DO want to make a secret handshake or password. :earseek:

Note to self: Don't be so defensive! They weren't referring to you in the first place ;) :earboy2:  :3dglasses :flower: :rolleyes1

LOL Cape girl, no need to defend yourself this early in the morning!! :flower:

Roxane, I would guess that at least 75% of the regular posters on this here VMK board have only been members since VMK opened. And others only started posting regularly after VMK. If you look at post counts, you will see that there aren't that many of us who have been around for a long time.

So keep DIS in your signature. Join in the discussions. Let us get to know you more. And have fun. That's what the DIS is all about :)

imho any dis member can have dis member in their sig after one post.

Please don't feel unwelcome.

I think the moment that the DIS becomes someplace or something that is exclusive and unwelcoming is the moment that I'd be ashamed to have DIS in any signature and will remove it.

Regarding cliques -- it seems that on all forums, people who spend a lot of time together are going to bond and joke, and there will be inside jokes, and it will be difficult for newcomers to "join in". But, of all the places I've seen, this is one of the most welcoming. No, you can't expect to get a huge welcome and suddenly become part of the gang with post #1, but there are great people here.

If you feel the need to remove DIS, then it means it's time for me to as well.

Be welcome!

Oh dear. As someone who posted to the "secret handshake" thread, I
certainly didn't mean it to be exclusionary. I only wanted to find a
solution for the trading scam that happened to Lisa.

Anyone is welcome to put DIS in their signatures, but that doesn't
automatically make the person trustworthy in trades, which is why
I thought a password would help keep scams to a minimum.

I've never been part of any inner circle, and I really hope my scam
prevention idea didn't offend anybody. :guilty:

Thanks for all the replies. You are all very nice and I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make anyone feel defensive. In real life I belong to a club, and we take a very dim view of people pretending to be us. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't commiting a faux-paux.
I hope to get to know you all better and be friends in the future :)

I second that! I am really sorry that it has been taken the wrong way. Everyone here should know that we are all friends. Everyone I met here is great and I have had absolutely no bad experiences. I feel absolutely horrible about this. I sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended. Please keep DIS in your signature. We were only trying to help our friends. :guilty: :guilty: :guilty:

My question is this, is it legal on VMK to put "Dis Member" in your signature?

I know they are strict about personal information. One of my VMK friends got a warning because I was talking about doing the park quests and she asked me if I lived close to WDW. Since having "Dis Member" in your signature is a pointer to this forum where the flow of personal information relatively unrestricted are you certain that it's allowed?

Thanks :)
