DIS frequent spelling errors

This is why I have MW's on my computer.

I just checked M/W online and it said:

Guilty of this one myself! I'm very self conscience of it. I always feel like I'm saying the wrong thing.

I'm not sure if this was written seriously or as a joke, but...
thanks for reminding me of another one!
conscience = noun
conscious = adjective
furthermore, their meaning isn't even that closely related
(do people even know what nouns, adjectives, etc are anymore?)
It's really not hard to remember. I don't know if this is a general rule, but it seems like most "-ence" words are nouns and most "-ous" words are adjectives.
SELF-CONSCIOUS

I usually don't type my periods behind abbreviations unless I'm writing formally (Dr, St, etc). Those abbreviation periods mess up the flow (visually) of the sentence; I don't like it. I'm also guilty of using all lower-case letters. I think it looks better, and I can type faster that way.

Nope No joke. See I guess I need to go back to school! Oh well.

How about the name Frances?

My grandmothers name was Frances and I don't know how many times people spelled it Francis. And are were well educated people making this mistake. Just drove me crazy!

Remember at the end of the name "es" is for female and "is" is for male just remember "his" has the "is" and is for the male name Francis.

Brooke Shields just had a baby girl and her middle name is FRANCIS!!! Boy's and girl's spellings aren't rules any more I guess.

From Webster's New World Dictionary of the American Language:

misspell (-spel') vt., vi. -spelled' or -spelt' , -spell'ing to spell incorrectly

I'm not sure what the vt. or the vi. are for.

Here is a grammar mistake that MANY people make and it drives me crazy! Too many people use I when it should be me. For example- Here is a picture of Henry and I. It should be Henry and me! If the word me makes sense by itself, then use it! You wouldn't say or write, here is a picture of I. You would say, here is a picture of me. I think a lot of people make this mistake because they think it is always correct to use I and not me.

incorrect- He went to Disney World with my brother and I.
correct- He went to Disney World with my brother and me.

incorrect- My brother and me went to Disney World.
correct- My brother and I went to Disney World.

I do this with my mom a LOT! It really gets on her nerves and makes her mad. I don't do it to make her feel stupid or anything, I'm doing it so she'll know how to say things properly in the future

My mom is constantly driving me nuts with the way she talks, "Do you wanna go to by the grocery store?" Huh? Do you HAVE to talk that way? And it's not just silly language like that, but the usual mistakes. She gets mad at me for it TOO (<---I spelled too correctly). I just cannot help but correct her. I am in college (meaning i'm around professors and his or her grammatical corrections all the time) and an English major on top of it.
I try not to do it too often just because some people find it rude rather than helpful.

As for myself, I try to be as careful as possible with my writing and my speech. I do not know everything, but learn as I go along here and there. I also dislike the "axe" for ask and also when people repeatedly (sorry if that is misspelled) say "You know what i'm saying?"

I am not sure on the whole boys names are spelled this way and girls are spelled that way rule. My name is Lesley and i am a girl, but from my knowledge it "should" be Leslie. I really do not see what the big whoop is about it as long as however the person spells his or her name is spelled correctly. Someone posted earlier about the name Frances. I was "yelled" at by a woman when i spelled her name, Frances as Francis. I almost always ask someone how to spell his or her name because i have to go through the same fiasco with others who just assume my name is spelled one way and not the other. I hate when i see my name spelled as Leslie. That is not me! I am Lesley.:D

P.S. I usually type and write "I" as "i" when it does not start a sentence. Sorry if it bothers anyone.;) AND, sorry that i wrote "spelled" so many times.

Gee.... I can't believe I started a thread on Friday, went away for the weekend, and it's still on page 1!!!

One word that confuses me is CANCELLED (that's how I spell it). I have also seen it spelled CANCELED. And my dictionary lists it BOTH ways. I hate that kind of ambiguity. I want a RULING on things like that!!!

Health care is two words according to MW...believe me, I know. I had it on a test about a billion times once and wrote it as one word all the way through.

I'd better tell my workplace to correct it then! The name on my building says "Albert Einstein HEALTHCARE Network!"

Now that we're talking about names, I get it a lot too. My name is Jessie (with an IE. and yes that's my name and no it's not short for Jessica!) I have people spell it Jessi or Jesse. Now, I use to insist that Jessie was for a girl and Jesse was for a boy, but now you see boys with Jessie and you even see girls spell it Jesse and occasionally you get one that spells it Jessy. By the way, I will hate my parents forever for giving me a boy's name to begin with. Why couldn't I have just had a name that no one could've confused with a boy's name?

DH has a problem when we go out to eat. His name is Aaron (Now I KNOW that everyone is familar with Aaron being the correct spelling for a boy) and when we go out to eat they ask for his name and he says, "Aaron," and they write down E-R-I-N. Hello!?!?!?! Does he look like a girl to you??? I've never known a guy named Aaron to spell his name Erin.

I'm not sure what the vt. or the vi. are for.

I believe it's for transitive and intransitive verb.

FYI, when looking up words in the dictionary and there is more than one spelling for it, go with the first one listed. Some dictionaries have made it a custome to go ahead and put slang words in there (i.e. alright) just because people have been doing it that way for such a long time. In this case the word misspell is the official spelling.

This is not a spelling error but I see it all the time on this board and it drives me crazy -- the inappropriate use of quotes. Just check this thread.

As a college composition and literature instructor, I can safely say that most of the pet peeves already listed on this thread are ones I go over in class every semester because I see so many of my students making the same errors. Conscience and conscious, affect and effect are two I believe have already been mentioned. Many of these are homonyms, but as I teacher of writing, I have to remind my students that "sounding" right is not enough.

Some other "swaps" that all-too-frequently appear in college essays:
accept and except
allusion and illusion
board and bored
elicit and illicit
loose and lose
passed and past
patients and patience
then and than
through, threw, and thorough
weather and whether
whose and who's
you, your, you're

(I've alphabetized the above list -- some occur more often than others, but all are common.)

The other side of the coin, however, is not pleasant. When people outside of my classes know I am an English teacher, they tend to try to write as properly as possible, but some probably avoid writing me anything, although I restrain myself from over correction. I think they experience flashbacks from some carping English teacher in elementary school and just freeze.

And I am trapped between just writing (typing), not worrying excessively over esoteric grammar rules, and getting stung by people who are trying to catch me in a mistake. For instance, I opened the common problem list in this post with an open-ended sentence, followed by a colon, and ending with each line in the list. I actually stopped and asked myself, should I properly close each line with the period or just leave the flipping thing alone?

 There should be a support group for people like me!

I do tell my students the only time I should ever see "It's" used when it does not refer to the contraction "it is" is when they are referring to the Hermann Munster's cousin's possession.;)

And while possessive mistakes are annoying, sentence faults and comma usage are far more deplorable in my students' essays.

Truly, ignorance is bliss.

:D

I haven't seen this one listed yet:

advice (the noun) and advise (the verb). There are always threads titled "Need some advise". Just one little letter but it drives me nuts LOL

Also Idea and Ideal. Don't know if this is a regional problem, but I hear people say "I have the best ideal!" It would be a good idea if they used the correct word.

This is a great topic!

Dopey's Gal---Heard something similar on tv a few minutes ago. The person said,"Idear" instead of idea. That drives me crazy. I definitely think that is also regional. I am from the south and I hear that a lot hear but not usually on tv.

Princess Aurora---Thanks for the dictionary lesson.:D That will be my something new that I have learned for the day.:p

I do tell my students the only time I should ever see "It's" used when it does not refer to the contraction "it is" is when they are referring to the Hermann Munster's cousin's possession.

Llama, I love it! What a great way to get them to remember that rule. Oh I hope lots of people are reading this -- incorrect usage of it's/its is the most frequent error I see here and the one the bugs me the most.

Pugsley,
Unfortunately, most folks who make the errors do not want to be told about them, and would avoid even clicking on this topic, much less reading through 7 pages!

I've learned that although there may be twenty things to mark on one page of my students' essays, the only way to get them to even LOOK at the comments is to only mark the most egregious, and, even then, sparingly.

I think this post is read mainly by those of us who don't need the corrections!:smooth:

Although quite humorous, you may want to check the content of your statement. Herman Munster had many cousins such as cousin Igor, cousin Phantom of the opera, cousin Wolverine and cousin Humphrey but cousin Itt was not one of them. Felix Silla and Roger Arroyo played Cousin Itt for the hit TV series The Addams Family. Now, if you replace Hermann Munster with Gomez and Morticia Addams, it would be both humorous and factual.

Llama: LOVE the swaps list. I spot those mistakes a lot, too!

Regarding names and spellings: I often wonder WHY parents give a child a name that they will spend a LIFETIME spelling out. And a LIFETIME being annoyed every time they see it misspelled. I have a neighbor with a SON she named RYLEE. If you like the name, just call him RILEY!! Plus for some reason the "EE" on the end of a name seems feminine to me. We also have a KAMRYN in the neighborhood. And don't get me started on Kaitlin, Caitlin, Katelyn......

I have kept my dictionary next to me for this thread!! LOL!!
