DIS frequent spelling errors

Seperate instead of separate. (Sound of fingernails on a chalkboard)

This is a cultural difference.

Canadian's spell:

cheque
centre

American's:

check
center

There are several words like this, and is not considered incorrect spelling on either side of the border :)

Apostrophes/possessives bother me.

You mean "Canadians spell." "Canadian's spell" is either a spell belonging to Canadians or "Canadian is spell," which makes no sense. Same with Americans

A girl (well, 30-yr-old) on another board recently posted, "I'm board!" I wanted so badly to reply, "Might I suggest studying spelling?"

Sorry... couldn't resist in this thread :)

Ah SHOOT!!! I was trying to be so careful!!! LOL!!

I do see QUITE for QUIET a lot.

You are correct. Thank you.

Another that drives me crazy... someone says, "I'm going to Wal-Marts or Kmarts." It's WAL-MART & KMART. And one of my employees (the same one that says I seen) also says, "I'm going to the doctors."

Also: Using "don't" when it should be "doesn't." Ex: She don't know the answer.

Ooh I hate when "seen" is used incorrectly.

For example: "I seen a lion" should be "I saw a lion"

ARGH....that drives me nuts!

Us Aussies spell things much the same as the Canadians do.........

But I know everyone is not good at spelling & Grammar, so even though I notice lots of mispelt words & yes they do annoy me at times, as I was always a good speller. I tend to overlook them in lots of cases, as I know what they mean.

Thank you for this thread...
A week or so ago I responded to a thread regarding the importance of a college education and I was upset the poster did not know the difference between there, their and they're and posted a mean reply. This gives me a chance to apologize for that, I was having a bad day, I am sorry... but isn't funny that we pick on the posts with incorrect grammar??? At the moment I just thought "how could you question the importance of higher education when you do not even have the basics down?".
It was wrong of me and I did feel bad

P.S. Another one is knowing the difference between two, to and too. Also, like another poster mentioned - effect and affect - they truly mean too (just kidding - ha! - "two") different things.

I am a bad speller and i don't use spell check. So if you never want to see errors, please don't read any of my posts, because chances are - there are some. That said, this is a community board, and I tend to type as I talk. Actually - I don't even remember how to use spell check on the dis.

While many of these errors are due to people not knowing the words or the rules, many of my errors are due to my poor typing skills. I try to go too fast and don't proofread before I hit "enter."

I dont mind spelling errors since Im sure I have my fair share of them and typos.

However I do hate hate hate when people use the word "Preggers" for pregnant. It just doesnt make sense. Like they cant say pregnant because its a bad word or something. I think the word just annoys me. ;)

The one I can never remember is to beer/bare/bear. I know beer is the drink, bare is something is empty, bear is the animal. But what about bare/bear/beer with me? I can never get that one. Also is it... I "used" to or I "use" to?

The ones that bug me the most have already been mentioned: its/it’s and lose/loose. The other one I’ve been seeing a lot lately is site/sight. I understand that people get really ticked off about these threads and don’t seem to think spelling/grammar matters at all as long as you get your point across. But it’s just really hard not to notice them when they were drummed into your head for so long. And I’m just kind of surprised that people don’t seem to learn these things in school any more. I guess most people just don’t think spelling/grammar is important, but I still do.

Lately my DH has been muttering about "When did respect become a verb?"

Some of my pet peeves are your/you're, there/their/they're, as well as seen instead of saw and done instead of did.

I can't stand when people say "prolly" instead of probably.

I am actually a pretty good speller, and do have a pretty good handle on grammar, but I am guilty of having inaccurate typing skills at times. :D

A college education! What!? My second grader is working on the difference right now. You're sweet to apologize, but that's pathetic.

"Alot" is the one I see the most of on this board and it drives me nuts. "Alright" is becoming more and more acceptable, but it does tend to betray oneself. "Irregardless" is another one, (ain't ;) no such thing) it's "regardless".

When you refer to "Canadian" spelling, what you really mean is "British" spelling, or the Queen's English. Either form is correct in this country, just be consistent. Hence check versus cheque, the difference is American/British.

We all make typos and I'm one of the worst offenders, but it is embarrassing to go back and find a message full of them.

Should be "We" Aussies... :)

On BBs, I spell "though" "tho"....just an abbreviation. But I DO know that it is "though", and I use "though" IRL.

Lately I've had to correct my DD(12) who has been saying "tuh"...as in "I went tuh Math class". Ugh! "TO"
