She woke up with terrible pain three nights ago, in her ankles. Then it moved to include the knees. She described the pain as 20 out of 10.

Friday we went to her regular doctor who did not find anything with a physical exam or bloodwork. X-rays showed some water and arthritis in the left knee, but nothing out of the ordinary for 40 years old.

she has a regular full physical on monday and an appt with a rumetologist(sp) on tuesday.
any ideas or suggestions or questions she might ask the docs?

Has she been sick recently? Flu or anything with a high fever?

I'm not sure but that's the first thing I that came to mind when I heard her symptoms. Also, is she drinking enough? Could it be from a little dehydration like a charlie horse happens?:scratchin

not that I recall...

at first I thought you meant beer. Heheheheh

yes she drinks a gallon of water daily. is that too much?

thanks everyone
I am sending her a link to this thread for more accurate answers.

well, no fever blows my thought out of the water. I can't think of anything else it would be. But, I am not a doctor nor do I play one on TV. ;) (just on the DIS sometimes. ;) )

I hope she gets to feeling better very quickly.

Did she hurt herself at all, even something that wouldn't at first seem like an injury to cause that kind of pain?

Has she taken cipro or any of those type of antibotics recently? They can cause the tendon to rupture.

OMG! That was something I had not thought of! my BIL had this happen a few years ago and the pain was terrible. The doctors were totally overlooking it. He's an athletic trainer (sports medicine) and had to tell the doctor that this was his problem!

Is the pain just in the joints? Or is she having pain between her ankles and knees, too? Has the pain spread anywhere else? Is it on both sides or just the right or left? Is it the same severity on both sides?

It would be very rare for her to have blood clots causing identical pain on both sides. The appointment with a rheumy is a good idea. Something autoimmune is the first thing that came to mind. Good luck!

of course I forgot some details.

it is on both sides

two weeks ago she did step off a ladder from the second step thinking it was the bottom. so she did have a bit of trauma on both legs. SHe iced one knee only and then was fine after a day.

on top of that she had a rash and was already on prednisone(sp). Which the regular doc said she might have prescribed for joint pain. We are thinking that might have masked some injury symptoms. But this new pain came on so suddenly. and not coinciding with weening of the prednisone.

Are there really Doctors on the DIS-actual people here whose "Medical advice" you would follow?:confused3

I see so many posts like this , I'm wondering if this is a Disney website...or a medical help line!

Duh! I didn't think of that. You are totally right.
Sorry, I have been up for too many hours today.:joker:

some times it seems the pain is radiating from my ankles all the way up to my hips. at one point I would have described it as excruciating shin splints! No musclular pain, no swelling and no redness though just sharp stinging pain, sometimes in spasms. thanks you guys..

ps... Dh was incorrect, bloodwork has not come back yet, hopefully tomorrow

Is the rash from a known cause? If not, it could be another symptom of something autoimmune. And, yes, the predinsone could masked some of the injury symptoms. Has she been on prednisone before? People have been know to have all kinds of funky side effects from prednisone...I had pretty bad pain in my arms for over a week after only being on prednisone for 3 days.

No worries...its all part of what I like to call "twenty questions." I tell all my patients that we will be playing "twenty questions" and to please bear with me. :goodvibes

That sounds like how my arms felt after I was on prednisone.

the rash was Lichen Planus (an autoimmune syndrome!) wow.. now i'm thinking and really worried!

I'm sorry...I didn't mean to worry you more. :guilty: Since you have an appt with your rheumy, you should be in good shape. It's just dealing with the pain that I am sure you'd rather not have to deal with between now and then.

the night before this all started I started taking 30 mg of prednisone (down from 40mg) but I ended up taking the extra 10 anyway.
