Direct add on...now feeling frustrated.

Breyean, it will be interesting to hear if your offer passes the ROFR as I understand there's a decent wait list for VGC direct points. Please pass along your results.

Many thanks.

I'll post on the resale/ROFR thread when we submit the contracts.

I know about that list - we were on it for months until we got our 125 from them, and then went BACK on it, right before they raised the price, for the rest.

So we're somewhere at the bottom of the list now.

But it's not impossible to find Mar resale. (I was considering going with that when I couldn't find an April!) Depending on how small and what resort you often have to catch those fairly quickly in any UY but if you don't need the points immediately you might do some checking and see if you locate one.

Thanks for the link. We have bought some resales in the past, but I do want current UY to bank, which has to be done by the end of this month. My plan to spend January using DVC points has depleted all but 21 2012 points, and DH has agreed to a smallish add on.

I know how that goes. 2012 is pretty much gone for us too. :confused3 Guess that means we're having fun! :goodvibes

I just realized something about your post - unless you're booking right away with the points you have up until the end of Feb to purchase and still bank the 2011 points. It gives a little time to watch for a small add on but it sounds like direct is the way you've decided to go. Just wanted to point that out though.

I am currently facing this choice myself. I think a great deal depends on how you want to use the points.

We go to Disneyland quite frequently for short little weekend getaways. We currently own at SSR -- bought direct years ago, but now we need more points.

Currently, when we try to book on fairly short notice (month or two out), I can't always get a villa at the Grand Californian, but they will almost always be able to offer me something at the Disneyland Hotel or Paradise Pier. So we are virtually never just Sorry_Outta_Luck, even when we haven't planned ahead.

So when we decided to add on, that was a pretty big factor. I use that opportunity to trade into the Disney Collection pretty regularly. So makes sense to buy direct; but I almost never book farther out than the 7 month window. So I am just going to buy some SSR points direct. They are going for about $99 direct (about what I see Grand Californian going for on resale).

So. I definitely thought that I wanted to buy resale. And I really thought that I wanted to buy at the Grand Californian. But I've come full circle! More SSR points for us. The original set has served us well. We have used the points for everything -- cruising, Grand Californian, Animal Kingdom Lodge, etc etc. It has been great.

Would I be happier if I were paying only $80 or $70 per point? Of course. But I think I would regret it next time I didn't have a place to stay in Disneyland. Also: we will almost certainly cruise again. And while I know that's not a super efficient use of points, it works great for us in years when we don't feel like visiting the parks. Especially now that there is a ship on the west coast. So it all really depends on your personal needs.

Which you already knew. So I'm really no help at all. :rotfl2:

Fun? Yes, I and my family are sure having fun! If I can find a resale, we'll go that way, and thanks for pointing out that we do have time to find one. We do have enough points to cruise with if we ever go on another member cruise, for instance.

If we decide direct, I would wait until the new year so as not to pay MF for them. Once DVC did not let us bank points that we bought from them in January, but I understand that now they will always allow it, correct?

Can't wait to hear about it! We are in the same boat with a March use year. Ned a small contract. But we are in no hurry - having fun looking! :surfweb:

We decided to pull our offer on the VGC resale I posted about last Friday.

Turns out the sellers had a vacation planned for April 2012 and were going to cancel so they could sell the contract now. Problem is, the reservation was for a cruise, over 340 points! They canceled it, but those points are toast now.

So, back to the hunt for another contract.

You are good to go. :thumbsup2 Not really sure why it filters out that particular company but it is normal and we are use to it.

Why does that company get starred out? Sorry if that question is either inappropriate to ask, especially in someone else's post. Just wondering?

We have found something to bid on!:thumbsup2

No jumping and being happy, it was sold, just not marked as such. We just may do direct come January. Until then, we'll look. I want the points for an August booking.

I am a DVC member. Joined at SSR Direct from Disney in 2004 initial purchase 200 points at $80 point. Our family has grown and we decided to add on. We have borrowed and borrowed...finally added on 150 points today. We have an Oct. use year and had to buy today to get 2010 points.

I keep feeling like we should work toward a resale at SSR. It seems so much cheaper to do resale but, the process and ROFR etc. bothers me. I know it boils down to money...maybe I should look for an Oct. SSR and save?? I can still cancel the Disney transaction. We can pay cash for an add on. Any advice??? THANKS!!

If you are primarily going to use those points for DVC stays (and an occassional trade through RCI) and don't need the points anytime soon, I would highly encourage you to look at the 3 major DVC resale companies (Google it).

I've purchased 7 contracts over the last 5 years, and everything went really well. I've dealt with all three companies and wouldn't hesitate to use any of them. As others have said, it takes about 2 months from offer to close. On my first two contracts, I only saved about $2 - 3 dollars a point. Total savings was about $500. However, I saved a good bit more on subsequent purchases. Plus, with resale, everything is negotiable (maintenance fees, closing costs, and price per point). Check out the ROFR thread and look at what some are selling for. SSR is especially a good deal through resale.

If you want to save money or get more points for the same amount of money for DVC stays, resale is definitely the way to go. I would recommend looking for a resale with an OCT UY. I had two UYs at one point, and even though it wasn't horrible, I wouldn't do it again. Just thought I'd throw that out there! :goodvibes

Good luck with your decision! :thumbsup2

RESALE IS NO BIG DEAL , rofr is easy as well I have bought 2 contracts thru resale and rofr took 7 days or less in each case . As long as you are good with only going to disney then there is no worrries .

Just ask yourself if possibly waiting 2 months (the process has been much quicker as of late) for your points is worth saving $30-$50 per point in up front costs.

Does Disney charge for closing when you do an add on ?
Are there any charges by Disney when you add on ?
We did an add on a few years ago
and there were no charges thru Disney.

This can vary quite a bit. I purchased 2 resale contracts in the past few months they have each taken at least 3 weeks for Disney to decline exercising ROFR. If you check around, that's actually not that unusual of a timeframe. The last one was submitted on Oct 11 and we are still waiting. The other variable factor is how long it takes the seller to get their documents back. I have one contract that was accepted on July 24 and we are still waiting to close - should be any day now I'm told. Even then, we still have to wait for the points to appear in our accounts which could add another 2 weeks. You would think the sellers would be motivated to get the paperwork done, but some are going through a divorce and getting both parties to sign can be a challenge or they are out of the country and can't (or don't) want to bother with a notary. The average maybe 2 months, but that unfortunately hasn't been my experience - and I am working with 1 of the big 3 realtors that deals with DVC contracts. I also had to buy larger contracts than I orignally planned because it was hard to find the number of points for what I was willing to pay resale. It seems the better prices are usually for contracts over 100 points. Over the long run, we will end up paying a lot more in MF than what we saved. On the flip side, I purchased a BCV contract from Disney for the exact number and UY I wanted and the points were available the next day so there are certainly benefits to both.

Yes Disney now charges members closing costs for add-ons. This amount will vary depending upon the number of points purchased.

I added on direct twice this year - 160 and 125 points. If I recall correctly, the closing costs were about $50 each time, which is a far cry from what they are on similar resales.

Wow - great price from Disney for closing. The resale closing is much more !
Good to know !
