Dinosaur to scary for 5 year old?

My ds had just turned 4 when we went to WDW last December. He really wanted to ride Dinosaur and so we let him. He LOVED it! He thought it was really cool.

So it just depends on the child.

My five year old (who admittedly does NOT like thrill rides) screamed and cried the entire ride. He was really frightened.

In 2005 my 5 year old son went on it and it was scary for him. But when it was over he said "let's do it again. " 

My sister, who is 20, has gone on many times and she always refuses to open her eyes... I think it's the scariest ride in WDW, but it's also one of my favorites.

I FINALLY got to go on Dinosaur for the 1st time on out last trip and I have to tell you I laughed when I was on it. I thought it was so much fun I was belly laughing when we got offI . I guess I'm weird!!!!
I kept thinking man I wish I'd gone on this on an earlier trip(I always sat out with our youngest child). Now my youngest son will be 4 1/2 when we go and we will not be taking him on it...he's not big on rough, dark rides.

I'm 23. Love Jurassic Park. Can NOT handle Dinosaur. I always try, but the souvenier photo is me hunched over with my head cover. I have a seven year old stepbrother who might love it, but he's crazy

Well if your kid loves dinosaurs, the first thing she (and you) should know is that Disney's Dinosaur ride is pretty much the epitome of this irritating aspect of dinosaur-related fiction. I imagine a future where the most state of the art ride is "Mammal!" which takes you on a rough wild ride through a steamy overgrown New York City office where every living thing is trying to kill you. Also, there are volcanoes and meteors and another half-dozen natural disasters occurring all at once. Because avoiding cliches that have been in existence since the initial days of paleoart and that need to die already is HARD (pout pout).

Why yes, this is a sensitive subject with me. How could you tell?

If your kid wants something that involves dinosaurs and isn't scary, why not see Flights of Wonder?

Just my own experience on the ride. I see alot of kids that come off the ride laughing, and alot that come off crying. I also see many adults doing the same. Definatley depends on the kiddo. When I went with my 5 y/o niece a couple years ago, she was scared, but she was fine afterwards. She still went on rides the rest of the day and the rest of the week. To the OP, you know your kid best. If they get scared in other, tamer dark rides during the trip, this may not be the one for them. The suggestion to ride by yourself first to test it out is a great one :) Let us know how it went when you get back :D

Too scary for this 29 year old. No thanks! Though, i'll get suckered into, YET again.

Our whole family went on this for the first time this past Tuesday. Ds 6 loved it and admitted it was on the scary side and dd4 said she didn't want to go on it again. She did not cry and it didn't prevent her from trying other rides, she just said she had done it and didn't want to do it again (same with Thunder Mt). Before we ride any of the rides we let them know what's in store, i.e. Dark, loud, fast etc.

Not sure why this is a sensitive subject for you, but I look at Dinosaur as a great entertainment ride. Do I think it is historically accurate? No. I think men & dino's lived together and the earth is only a few thousand years old, not billions. But it's DISNEY and I go with the flow to be entertained and have a good time. I am never disappointed :thumbsup2
(but I still wouldn't take my 5 yr. old on it!)

Depends on your kid--sounds like the OP's would be fine. I would add that:

1. Put your kid on the inside seats for this one; that will generally keep protective adults between the kid and the dinosaurs. Having ridden on both outside and inside seats, the outside seats are a lot scarier. Particularly the right side where the T-Rex jumps out at you!

2. There are places on the ride that aren't entirely filled with scenery, that are just black walls or similar. If you get too scared, look away from the dinos and at the non-immersive walls and remember it's not real.

Dinosaur is too scary for me and I'm 36. :)

The ride pic is always me with my arms over in my head hiding.

Six of us rode it, 4 loved it and 2, me and DD13, were terrified. Have to say, it was a pretty funny ride picture! I will not do it again. EVER:eek:!

Two five year olds with me, one timid, one not, neither were very frightened. If you are really worried, you can warn them about the surprise, which you can find out here and online, but I won't give away. That is the scariest part of the whole ride.

SO scary...I was scared and I'm 34! Our son loves dinosaurs too, but we almost didn't get himn on any other rides because of him getting so scared on this one. He STILL talks about how scary it was and he is now 10.

Before we went, this was the ride DS (7) most wanted to ride. Well, he ended up going through the whole ride with his face hidden in DH's armpit! It scared the bejesus out of him and he had no desire to ride it a second time. DD (11) also didn't like it, but more because it was VERY loud and bothered her ears. The rest of us love it.
