I know in the dinning rooms they have dress code. Do they care about shoes- I mean would flip flops and a skirt be ok? What about for teenagers? What do they normaly wear to dinner on Formal night?

If you mean the rubber flip flops you wear at the beach, personally I think they'd be out of place with a skirt--their really much more appropriate with swimwear. If you mean backless leather sandals, they'd be fine.

My son will be in a tux. It's cheaper to rent a tux than buy a suit and shoes, etc.

No, I have never seen anyone wear flip flops to dinner.
As for teenagers, slacks, shirt and tie would be the most appropiate with socks and shoes.
Dress the best you can. It is an entire new experience.
My wife is in the process of purchasing new clothes now for our upcoming trip in Sept. If you are on a clothing budget, start hunting now and put it up until just before the cruise.

i'm not into formality so if dress codes are enforced we'll eat in our stateroom (concierge room)....

(there's no chance that hubby would ever carry a jacket and a tie with him on vacation....nor would i expect him to....the operative word is vacation......)

Your husband won't need a jacket and tie to dine on Tropical Night (Tuesday on the Magic) regardless of your rotation. He'll also be fine with "business casual" at Animators Palatte and Parrot Cay unless it's a formal or semi-formal night (Sunday and Thursday). Jackets are requested at Lumiere's always (except tropical night), and at Palo's. On formal night a tux or dark suit are requested, and on semi-formal night a jacket and tie are requested. If he doesn't want to get dressed up, then yes, it would be better to dine in your cabin. Depending on your rotation this could mean up to five in cabin meals!

Shorts and jeans are not allowed into the dining rooms for any dinner. Even though it's a vacation, part of the fun of cruising is getting dressed up for dinner IMHO. But it's your trip, and your choice. Rather than in room dining you always have to option of eating at Topsiders as well :-)

The requested dinner dress code is as follows

Animator's Palate and Parrot Cay - Casual resort wear. Men and boys might consider polos and kahkis. Women and girls may consider slacks or a sundress.

Lumiere's and Triton's - they ask that you dress a little nicer. Men may want to wear a tie or sports jacket. Women would wear a little nicer dress.

On the 7 day cruise the following options have been added

Tropical Night - Wear you best tropical outfit (including shorts)

Formal night is Black tie optional, but traditionally people wear either a tux/formal or their "Sunday Best"

SemiFormal sees much the same as formal night - a few less gowns and a few more cocktail dress/Sunday dresses.

With the exception of the Tropical Night - Disney Respectfully Request no shorts in the dinning rooms at dinner.

There is not distinguishment between the age of the guest in the request for dinner attire. My son wore polo's and khakis to dinner at age 4 on our first cruise and a Fish tie to dinner at Tritons (which was off by the appetizer, but he wore it ;) )

thanks for the information..
we're only on the 3 day cruise so formal isn't a problem i don't think...
we'll stay away from palos and triton's in order to avoid the jacket/tie problem....
i can understand your desire for elegance on a cruise, but we live that kind of thing year round (you haven't met pretentious until you do the rounds with the diplomatic corps) so as far away as we can get from anything formal (and pretentious) so much the better....
i never wear jeans and rarely shorts, so don't worry about me making a faux pas showing up for dinner that way....
anyway...
different strokes and all that....

Just a couple of observations

1) Don't eat in your stateroom unless you really want to check out room service.
2) Wear what feels comfortable for YOU.
3) Unless you turn up in cut-offs and a Harley t-shirt (both of which my DH owns BTW), you're unlikely to be turned away.
4) Some people like to pull out all the stops in dressing up, some don't. It's petty to pass judgement in either case IMHO.
5) Dinner is an hour and a half out of your day - why stress about it?
6) Last but not least, once everyone has their lap under the table, can you really tell (and are you interested?!?!) in what they have on their feet!

OK - off my soapbox now!

your soapbox is just fine....
i agree with you entirely....
as for my feet....i'm not bringing anything but my birkenstocks....
it's summer and they don't go near anything else in the summer.....even when i wear a dress....(a comical sight to be sure, but i like to cultivate an aura of eccentricity.....that way , when i don't show up accompanying my husband to whatever it is he has to attend they all nod knowingly.....)...
besides i'll be on vacation......dressing up is something i HAVE to do the rest of the year......not on my own time....

I saw a range of clothing the two nights I dined at Palo, and nobody seemed to mind, different strokes and all that. While DH had on a jacket and dress shirt with nice khakis and I had on a black ankle length dress, we saw everything from suit/tie and evening dresses to men in knit short sleeve shirts and khakis and women in slacks and blouses.
In my mind Palos is worth a little gussing up for:)
No one will glare at you if you don't, they are too busy being waited on hand and foot!
Ps I don't like dressing up and going to places where I have to, but this was way different somehow and made it so romantic, dinner and then after, walking on the deck so dressed up, in the moonlight!

If you want to wear flipflops at dinner, people will just assume you're your own person with your own personality...that or that you forgot to pack shoes;)

if we were going to palos, i'd dress up.....even bring along a pair of dressy sandals...
but we're not going to eat at palos, so it's not a problem....
the whole point of this cruise for us (and for the trip in general) is to be together as a family....
my kids are weird that way.....for some odd reason they like to be with us....i'm enjoying it while it lasts....so palos is out...
i don't consider it a hardship....(i'd rather eat with them, go to the shows with them....go to the movies with them.....hit the water park at atlantis with them....and whatever else they still feel like doing with their definitely over-the-hill mom....to give you an idea, they forced hubby and me to make a rocksong video with them last year at downtown disney......god.....if someone ever finds it, they could blackmail me for sure....)....
anyway....no palos for us.....i'll be with the kids or reading a book....(and hopefully not with my head in the head)...

sounds like you will have a trip to make memories for a life time:)
you can always go back and have a trip and enjoy Palo just the two of you when the kids are grown(like DH and I just did)
The mention of the head reminded me....the warning to close the lid before flushing is there for a reason!!!! I could FEEL the air being pulled under the bathroom door by the vaccum of the toilet flushing:eek:

thanks for the warning......i didn't know that...
i'm terrified i will be sick (i have MAJOR motion sickness problems)...
i never even considered setting foot on a ship before this (despite the fact that we live 10 minutes from the beach), but the kids so wanted the disney cruise, and this is the last year the older one will be able to do it.....
so......talk about a mom's love, eh....(that or a martyr complex)...
hmmm......

Don't worry about motion sickness -- I took Bonine each day -- and therefore never had to worry, even with very rough seas. Hubby and I also cruise to be with our kids (who are teenagers) and yes, still want to be with mom and dad. Therefore, we will probably skip Palo's again this year. If you want to go to Lumiere's dressed in Business casual clothing -- you will NOT be the only one's dressed that way. But, if you are in a concierge level room -- that might be a fun night to get room service as a family!
:)

And concerning those 'very pressurized' toilets..... put a piece of toilet paper in the water of the toilet(a VERY long piece), and stretch the other end across your room. Have the camcorder ready -- and then flush the toilet -- the entire piece of TP will race thru your stateroom and down the toilet -- very fastly --- SWOOSH!!;)

From another very motion sick prone person - Bonine aka Meclizine is a wonder drug. Take it about 2:00 PM before you board the ship and you will do just fine.

I was really surprised how some people dressed for formal night.

I found my formal for $14.00 - and it was beautiful.

Darlene

thanks for the advice....
i'll ask my doctor about bonine....
hopefully i can take it and hopefully it will help....
last august we took the ferry to the statue of liberty in the morning....
my daughter and i were finished for the rest of the day...
had to go back to the hotel to lie down until the evening's show on broadway.....
the same thing happened to us when i foolishly booked us on a glass bottomed boat here where we live.....(that time we had to lie down on a bench when we got off.....it was an hour before we could get near the car for the short drive home)....
talk about motion sickness...
but then the kids got hooked on those DCL commercials last summer at WDW....and i have to admit, it all does sound like a lot of fun....
so despite the potential motion sickness, i'm looking forward to it...
thanks for the tp tip.....i'm sure my son will want to try it out....maybe video it...."what i did on my summer vacation".....toilet trials.....should go over big with his class.....

My husband gets sick looking at pictures of boats! The only thing getting him on this cruise is 1. he lives for anything Disney and 2. my boss is paying for everything!! I did call his doctor and filled a prescription for the patch...didn't want to take any chances! Have fun

Miss Scarlet,

I also have problems with motion sickness (just riding in a car sets me off) and the meds make me sick. I found that those motion sickness wristbands (you can get at a boat supply place) help me alot. I wore them the first day and night and when I got up the next morning my body was use to everything and I did GREAT!!! I did keep them with me at all times just in case.

You and your family will have a wonderful time.
