Dinner at Boma?

You really should try it! That is the only way to know if you are going to like it or not. We try and eat there several times on a trip.

Good luck in your decision!

I was not thrilled with Boma, and neither was DH. We're not terribly adventurous eaters, but we did try a lot of new things there. And it just wasn't for us - it wasn't that it was too spicy, I just think that the spice flavors and combinations were not winners for us - even the desserts were just not our thing. Items that I normally like didn't even seem to taste very good, with the exception of the fresh fruit offerings which were lovely. We didn't leave hungry, and I'm glad I tried it because AKL is beautiful and it was a nice atmosphere, but we won't be going back anytime soon. A lot of places I ate at WDW, I still remember certain items and crave them and think about how great they were - nothing like that from Boma for me.

That said, I also didn't care for Ohana, another Dis favorite, so take my review for what it's worth. :)

The thing is, it's not spicy like Mexican or Thai (hot spicy). They do have some different spices/spice combos than we as Americans are used to, but it's fun to try them :). I had the chicken and prime rib and didn't find them spicy at all :). I really enjoyed some of the dishes, and some I didn't, but since it's a buffet I really liked trying so many new things (and I'm not an adventurous eater by any stretch of the imagination :rotfl:).

I agree with someone else--try it at least once. Then you can determine if you want to go back or not :). The restaurant is beautiful and the resort is spectacular, so dinner gives you a good excuse to check it out :thumbsup2.

Go across the hall to Jiko - my EXTREMELY picky ds14 will eat the pizza there while the rest of us can have a good meal. He also likes the cheese plate (we get them wherever we go) and the flat bread. Boma's is not one of our favorites.

I think I may just check out the menu at Jiko.

If the setting of Boma intrigues you but the food sounds a bit scary, try going there for breakfast. They serve traditional breakfast food and there is also a smaller area for the more "adventurous" eaters that has traditional African breakfast food.

We're staying at the AKV in June and plan on eating breakfast at Boma on our first and last morning there. Yum!!! My DD5 (and DH) love the jungle juice! I would like to try it for dinner someday, but right now, the kids prefer to hop over to RFC in the AK.

I absolutly LOVE Boma! The breakfast buffet is better than the dinner in my opinion, but take it from a not so adventurous diner.. everyone will find something they like. Another good option is Jiko. In the past, they have offered a fantastic bean soup, and a bbq chicken and apple appetizer pizza

We didn't know if Boma would be for us either ~ but we loved it ♥ It's our fave place in WDW now :)

My two little ones are picky eaters too, but it was fine because the chef's made them grilled cheese and chicken fingers, even found them some cereal from breakfast!

I say go for it....if you read the reviews you'll see how incredible Boma is and it's definitely worth trying. Chances are you'll LOVE it :goodvibes

We ARE adventurous eaters usually...and we seriously did not like Boma in September 2008 at all. Foods were either extremely spiced or totally tasteless bland...and the spice combinations which tasted just odd to us (like the BBQ ribs that turn out to not be "BBQ" ribs...they're red-hot cinnamon ribs...whew!) There were plain choices, but we could not get close to those sections because the place was packed, long lines, & many line jumpers the night we were there. Long, long lines at each area (waiters keep telling people to go to any area they want in any order "because there are no set lines here"...HA! 20-30-40 people in line! Desserts were good, but not worth the lines or the price.

I would not suggest Boma to anyone who classifies themselves as Not Adventurous eaters...

Just an FYI:

The CM's/waiters were correct. Boma is not set up like a "typical" buffet. It's set up in "pods"..where each "pod" is supposed to be it's own "island" unto itself.

Now, each POD might develop it's own line..that happens a LOT (Especially around the meat carving station and the soups)...but there is no need (and no "rule" or expectation) for you to start at one end (the meat carving station) and work your way through a line to the OTHER end (desserts).

I know, I know...it sorta flies in the face of the typical "buffet" ettiquette and "rules", but it's true, none the less.

:)

We love Boma's. All of us...from my 2 year old DD all the way up to my DW (and I). We are all pretty adventurous eaters, though...and try pretty much everything on the buffet.

I've noticed, by all the various threads about Boma's over the years, it seems to be a "love it or hate it" place. And it's not the FOOD quality that differentiates it, like most other "love it or hate it" places at WDW, it's the food preparations. That is, some folks don't particularly care for the flavoring and spice pairings...which are very different than what many "typical" palette's are used to.

That being said: There is a carving station (though the prime rib was NOT there when we ate a couple weeks back, it was another cut of beef. The pork ternderloin remains, though), there is a more "kid friendly" (mac and cheese, chicken fingers) area, and there are plenty of "normal" vegetables (green beans) and fruits on the buffet, too. The worst that may happen is you find yourself confined to that "stuff".....but you won't leave hungry. In addition....IMHO, Disney's buffets typically are NOT the place for the "meat and potatoe" sect, because they do offer some variety. I don't think Boma's is much different...other than their unique offerings..than MOST of Disney's buffets. Your mileage may vary...

Our favorites include the smoked BBQ ribs (which are NOT your traditional BBQ ribs...sauce is more molasses based (I think), than tomato based, and has some african spices in it), the "potatoes with afritude", the mango vinagrette salad dressing, and a whole HOST of the soups (carrott ginger, coconut curry seafood stew, and others). Oh, and the Zebra Domes on the dessert pod......we LOVE those!

This is HONESTLY one of those places I think you really do have to try to see if you'll like....because everyone's palette is different. Some "less adventurous" palettes do just fine....some "more adventurous" palettes balk at the flavor and spice combinations.

Just back and Boma was our LEAST favorite meal of our entire group - 4 adults and 2 kids ages 10 and 7. It was crowded and noisy. I thought the prime rib was very good but other than that I was not impressed. We had the same plan - AK and then Boma. We actually headed out of AK around 4 and went back to the hotel because we were all tired and my DS 7 wanted to swim rather than stay another hour at AK.

If your son is a picky eater - I would try something different. There were a few basics for kids but it wasn't worth it in my opinion. Our group loved all the other TS restaurants - Mama Melrose's, Tepan Edo, La Celliur, Liberty Tree Tavern Character dinner, Whispering Canyon Cafe, and hef Mickey's character breakfast/brunch.

Thanks for your thoughts. We are also thinking of some of the other ones on your favorite list......Mama Melrose's, Whispering Canyon and Chef Mickeys.

Whispering Canyon has great food... I especially love the cornbread and vegetarian enchilada. Just be aware that it will be noisy but in a fun way.

We LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Boma!

Ate there 2 weeks ago for dinner and it was fabulous!!!!

Interesting thread, as I do think Boma is a love it or hate it type of place. There are some really "different" things here, but thats what we were looking for on vacation (not just another trip to Chilis at the mall!)

We have been to Boma quite a few times now with our kids and everyone loves it...even if you dont branch out too far, the prime rib, chicken, salad, veggies and desert are awesome. The theming and atmosphere is also great. We have even done Boma twice in one visit a few times

But as a previous poster said.....you need to try it to determine

I really enjoy Boma! It is delicious food that I can not get easily at home. Yes, you have to stretch your taste buds a bit, but that is what vacation and travel gives you the opportunity to do. Experiment! Try something different. Get a little out of your comfort zone.
Experince the Magic of Disney!

We went to Boma in July and I was a bit leary because DH is a picky eater. We went on a Thurs. The soup selection was wonderul. DS loved the soup. He had a couple of bowls as did I. The prime rib was amazing. There were a couple of things that I tried that didn't really care for but other I really enjoyed. DH really enjoyed his meal too and actually said that of all of the restaurants we had been to..this was his favourite. We are going back on this trip too.
