Dining Review - September/October 2024

I am also not a big fan of Trader Sam's. The mugs are definitely cute but the schtick inside gets tired, sitting with strangers is hit or miss, and honestly - I don't think the drinks are that great. 😯 I honestly much prefer their patio seating where there is often live music. Yachtsman is always a good time. You got prime seating at the windows! Those onion rolls are perfection!!
Hi. We’ll have to try the patio seating next time we are in the mood for a Tiki bar vibe; I don’t think we would waste our time trying to get into Trader Sam’s again. We really enjoyed Yachtsman’s; I would go there just for those onion rolls.

I am new to the boards but I love a dining report! I feel like booking the Boathouse and Narcoossees for my next trip now. I definitely think I need a blue drink with a duck in it. 😁
Hi. Thank you. I definitely recommend both the Boathouse and Narcoossee’s. You can’t go wrong with a blue drink with a duck :)

Yay! You are back with another report! I love reading all of your eating adventures. I still haven't done Trader Sams and the more I read about them in reports, the less likely I am to head over there.
Hi. Thank you. Maybe not a popular opinion given how long the wait lists are, but I’d say don’t waste your time at Trader Sam’s. There are so many other bars with better drinks that you won’t have to wait hours trying to get in, then not necessarily even getting a seat or a convenient place to stand with your traveling party.

Enjoy your dining reports and wanted to let you know I have had the Key Lime Martini at Crew Cup twice now and you were right delicious! Like dessert and drink all in one.
Thanks for the great reviews!
Hi. Glad you liked it. It wasn’t on the cocktail menu at Crews Cup when we went, but the bartender was still able to make it for me. Definitely like a dessert and drink all in one.

Wednesday 10/2/24
We started the day at Animal Kingdom.

We made it to another lounge we haven’t tried before…Nomad Lounge. We were able to get seats immediately at the inside bar which is where we wanted to be since it was hot out. We’ve tried coming here in the past but wasn’t successful since it was crowded. I think most people want to sit outside along the water, but we preferred being inside where it was air conditioned. Maybe in cooler weather we’ll try the outside patio (if we can get in).
IMG_1700.jpeg

I ordered the Tempting Tigress: Russell’s Reserve 10yr Bourbon, St Elizabeth Allspice Dram, Tamarind Syrup, and Lime Juice. The bartender mentioned if I don’t like my drink to tell her so she can make it right. Maybe many people complain about this drink.

Scott ordered the Annapurna Zing: Bombay Sapphire Gin, Passion Fruit Purée, Mint, Simple Syrup, and lime juice topped with Ginger beer and a glowing lotus flower

IMG_1720.jpeg

I did not like the Tempting Tigress at all so told the bartender and ordered the Lama Libation: Starr African Rum, Cruzan Banana rum, and Guava purée with orange, lime, and pineapple juices topped with Goslings Black Seal 151 rum. This was much better.
IMG_1730.jpeg

We ordered the Cuban Frita sliders: Beef and Pork patties, spiced ketchup, crispy shoestring potatoes, mojo yuca fries. The sliders and the yuca fries were very good
IMG_1725.jpeg

We also ordered the Pineapple-glazed pork belly: Pineapple-glazed pork belly with Guajillo chili sauce, chicharrones, spice pickled vegetable slaw. I found the pork belly was too fatty so didn’t like it, but Scott thought it was good. I know pork belly can be fatty but this was a bit too fatty for me.
IMG_1727.jpeg

We also ordered the Churros: Vanilla cream and seasonal sauce. The churros were great.
IMG_1733.jpeg

Later that evening we drove to the Beach Club for our dinner reservation at Beaches and Cream. We both drank soda, Coke for Scott and Sprite for me.
IMG_1746.jpeg

I had the Beaches & Cream Grilled Cheese: with creamy tomato soup (can be substituted with French fries or fruit). Can add bacon or Ham for an additional charge. I added well done bacon and substituted fries for the soup. I don’t like hot liquids (soup, beverages, etc). This was very good. It sounds boring but sometimes a simple grilled cheese sandwich is just what you are in the mood for.
IMG_1750.jpeg

Scott had the French Dip sandwich: Thinly sliced roast beef, Swiss, and crispy fried onions on a toasted French roll, served with au jus. He had this with tater tots. He enjoyed his sandwich.
IMG_1749.jpeg

For dessert we shared the Strawberry Shortcake: Vanilla shortcake, strawberry compote, vanilla ice cream, and whipped cream. This was good and not too big, we were able to finish it. Last time we were here we had one of the sundaes which are massive and we didn’t come close to finishing it.
IMG_1756.jpeg

A few Thanksgivings ago, I did Beaches and Cream for Thanksgiving dinner. Good food although my malt tasted a bit weird. I always forget about this place though. Thanks for the reminder. Maybe need a ressie for my trip in May.

Love your reviews. We spend 2 weeks at Hilton Head every summer, so I especially loved those reviews. We have tried all the places you went. The $9 to get into Sea Pines really is a fee and not a scam from the guard shack :-)

If you go back to Hilton Head anytime soon, next door to Frankie Bones is another SERG restaurant called Wise Guys that is really good and has a similar vibe as Frankie Bones.

We enjoyed it. I agree it’s probably not a must do every trip but it’s a cute little place that we enjoyed comfort food at.

We definitely want to go back to Hilton Head, we really liked it and it’s on the short list for potential places to move down the road.

Glad to hear the Sea Pines charge wasn’t a scam.

We’ll have to give Wise Guys a try next time; thank you for the recommendation.

We’ve been going to Hilton Head for years, so I totally get the Sea Pines fee being a bit of a surprise the first time. But once you’re in, it's definitely worth it! I also have to agree with you about Frankie Bones—it’s such a great spot. If you ever head back to Hilton Head, make sure to check out Wise Guys next to it. It’s a SERG restaurant too and has a similar fun vibe, plus the food is fantastic.
Hi. Glad to hear that Sea Pines fee wasn’t a scam. We drove around once we were in and found the restaurant but changed our mind about eating there. Maybe next time we’ll try it.

We loved Frankie Bones, our favorite restaurant that we tried on Hilton Head. We’ll try Wise Guys next time, thank you for the recommendation.

Thursday 10/3/24
We started the day at Epcot.

Scott ordered the lobster tail from one of the Food & Wine festival booths. He said it was a little tough but still tasty. He didn’t have high expectations for a lobster tail from a food booth, but he enjoyed it.
IMG_1816.jpeg

That evening we drove to Caribbean Beach Resort for our dinner reservation at Sebastian’s Bistro. We went early to have a pre-dinner cocktail at Banana Cabana.
IMG_1819.jpeg

We were happy to see the barstools back at Banana Cabana. During our last trip they weren’t out.

Scott had a double bourbon with Coke. I had a Banana Cabana: Cruzan Mango Rum, Parrot Bay Coconut Rum, Bols Crème de Banana Liqueur, Minute Maid Orange Juice, and Pineapple juice with a float of grenadine. This is a really good drink.
IMG_1825.jpeg

Scott loved those little alien guys. When you push the button on his belt he’ll say a saying, and if there are more aliens nearby they all chime in. We now have several of them at home and it makes us laugh each time we push the button on the belt.

We were seated on time at Sebastian’s Bistro.
IMG_1830.jpeg

It’s a set menu and you can ask for more of anything you want more of.

They start you off with Buttery House-baked pull-apart rolls with guava butter and caramelized onion jam. I say the same thing each time we’re been here about these rolls; they are good and if they were warmed up they would be even better.
IMG_1838.jpeg

Next comes the Spice Necklace Salad: Mixed greens with spiced candied pumpkin seeds, tropical fruit, and radish with key lime dressing. This is a really good salad with a refreshing and light dressing.
IMG_1841.jpeg

The Main course: Taste of the Caribbean: A selection of our favorite recipes inspired by the flavors of the Caribbean: Oven-roasted Citrus Chicken, Slow cooked Mojo pork with mango sambal, Grilled chili rubbed beef with Mojito relish, and sustainable baked fish with Veracruz sauce. Each time we have dinner at Sebastian’s there is usually one item we like better than others and one that is our least favorite; the favorite and least favorite changes each visit. Today the weakest item was the fish; it was pretty bland
IMG_1850.jpeg

Sides are served family style and include Cilantro Rice and Beans, vegetable curry, and grilled seasonal vegetables. I don’t know what they do, but this broccolini is so tasty. I normally don’t like cilantro since it tastes like soap, but somehow the rice and beans here is really good and doesn’t taste like soap.
IMG_1848.jpeg

For vegetarian’s they also have a vegetarian plate called “Harvest of the Caribbean” which includes Impossible Kabob, fried jerk Tofu, plant based sausage, and Caribbean “fish” cake served with cilantro rice and beans, vegetable stew, and grilled seasonal vegetables. We didn’t try the vegetarian version but wanted to include what we saw on the menu for reference.

For dessert: Our celebrated house made coconut pineapple bread pudding with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream. This bread pudding is phenomenal, the star of the meal.
IMG_1853.jpeg
IMG_1860.jpeg

We really enjoyed our meal at Sebastian’s Bistro. It’s a lot of food, we didn’t end up asking for more of anything. This is such a cute place, really a hidden gem.

Friday 10/4/24
We started the day at Disney Springs, dropped our purchases back in the villa, then headed to Hollywood Studios.

The standby line at Gideon’s was maybe 20 minutes so we got in line. During prior trips we made numerous visits to Gideon’s and stocked up on cookies that we froze and brought home. I think we overdid it and were a little tired of Gideon’s so skipped it for a bit. Now we were ready to have some treats from Gideon’s.

Leaving Scott on the Gideon’s line I wandered over to the Wine Bar George window and ordered the Millionaire’s Shortbread: buttery shortbread, caramel, dark chocolate. I had that boxed up and took this picture when we got back to the villa. This ended up coming home to New Jersey with us and we tried it once we were home. It was OK but not something I would get again.
IMG_1952.jpeg

Once in Gideon’s we bought 4 cookies: 1 Frankenstein, 1 Bride of Frankenstein, and 2 Crumb Cake/Coffee Cake cookies.

The chocolate cookie with M&M’s is the Frankenstein cookie, it came back to New Jersey with us and it’s still in the freezer, we haven’t had it yet.
IMG_1949.jpeg

The vanilla cookie with M&Ms is the Bride of Frankenstein cookie. This also came back to New Jersey and is still in the freezer, we haven’t had it yet.
IMG_1950.jpeg

The crumb cake/coffee cake (I’m not sure what they call it) is very good. We had one of them while we were at Disney nibbling on it over a few days. The other one came back to New Jersey and is in the freezer with the other 2 cookies.
IMG_1948.jpeg

We also bought a slice of Red Velvet cake.
IMG_1992.jpeg

I ordered the French Toast Cold Brew. This was really good. We’ve had the Peanut Butter Cold Brew before and I think I like the French Toast one just a little more than the Peanut Butter one.
IMG_1944.jpeg

Our treats back in the villa before we either froze or put some in the fridge. The pictures of the individual treats were also taken back in the villa before being re-packed.

IMG_1945.jpeg

Friday 10/4/24 Continued
Later that evening we drove to the Boardwalk for our dinner reservation at Trattoria Al Forno. We went early to have pre-dinner cocktails at Abracadabar. The bar itself was packed but we were able to sit at one of the bar tables.

IMG_1959.jpeg

Scott had a Martini. I had my favorite cocktail - Hoodunit’s Punch: Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, Orange Juice, Pineapple Juice, Coconut.
IMG_1966.jpeg

We checked in at Trattoria Al Forno close to our reservation time, having learned our lesson on prior trips that sometimes when you check in early, they want to seat you early even if you tell them you plan to have a drink at the bar.

We were seated right around our reservation time.
IMG_1969.jpeg

For an appetizer we ordered the Pizza Bianca which is an off menu item we learned about a few trips ago and really enjoy.
IMG_1983.jpeg

We remembered to tell them no bread right away since we ordered the pizza appetizer and didn’t want the bread.

After the pizza I wasn’t that hungry so ordered the Insalata Caprese: Fresh Burrata, Ripe tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil. This was very good, and a nice light option.
IMG_1985.jpeg

Scott ordered Parmigiana di Pollo: Breaded chicken breast, parmigiana-reggiano, provolone, rustic tomato sauce. He loves chicken parm and enjoyed this one.

IMG_1989.jpeg

He was also in the mood for the Polpette (meatball) so had that too and enjoyed it.
IMG_1987.jpeg

We skipped dessert since we had the Red Velvet cake from Gideon’s in the villa that we were looking forward to. Unfortunately, the cake was very disappointing and dry; we each tried it but threw it out after a few bites.
IMG_1992.jpeg

Hi. Maybe we missed something once we went in Sea Pines, we drove around looking for the restaurant but ended up leaving. Is there something else we should have looked for in the resort? Or done in the resort?

I’ve received several recommendations for Wise Guys, we’ll definitely give it a try next time we’re in Hilton Head.

Thank you

Saturday 10/5/24
We started the day at Animal Kingdom and later hopped to Hollywood Studios.

That evening we drove to the Boardwalk for our dinner reservation at Flying Fish. As they were walking us towards our table, we saw there were seats at the bar in Flying Fish and asked if we could eat there instead of a regular table. The lady seating us brought us to the bar and quickly had us seated there. We’ve never sat at the Flying Fish bar since we normally would go to Abracadabar for our pre-dinner cocktails when going to either Flying Fish or Trattoria al Forno. This is nice to know is an option.
IMG_2105.jpeg

Scott had a Martini and I had Pacific Island Punch: Mount Gay Eclipse Rum, Tropical Juices. The drinks were good but my Pacific Island Punch wasn’t as good as my favorite Hoodunit’s Punch from Abracadabar.
IMG_2118.jpeg

I’m easily amused and thought the silverware was adorable looking like fish scales.
IMG_2115.jpeg

We were chatting with the bartender and another guest having dinner at the bar about Hurricane Milton coming.

We ordered two appetizers that we shared.

Slow-roasted Pork Belly: Peach and Bourbon Glaze, grilled peach, charred onion, crispy shallots. This was very good.
IMG_2132.jpeg

Octopus Enhancement: Plancha Seared Octopus. This wasn’t on the appetizer menu but was an enhancement that we ended up making into an appetizer. This was good but I preferred the pork belly while Scott preferred the octopus so we each ate more of the one we liked better.
IMG_2133.jpeg

The bread and butter is very good here. It’s hard not to fill up on it.
IMG_2122.jpeg

We each ordered our own entree, of course tasting a bit of each others.

I had the Chilean Sea Bass: Jumbo lump crab, grilled asparagus, tarragon, Ras el Hanout brown butter. This was good but not as good as the first time we had it.
IMG_2139.jpeg

Scott had the Seafood Trofie Pasta: Shrimp, lobster, scallops, clams, mussels, yellow tomato-Chardonnay sauce. He enjoyed his dish.
IMG_2137.jpeg

We ordered two desserts which is unusual for us
Scott chose the vanilla bean cheesecake: spiced croutons, cherry fluid gel, brown sugar shortbread. He said this was just OK. Of course we both ate a bit of each dessert. I agreed with his assessment, it was OK but wasn’t anything special.
IMG_2146.jpeg

I chose the Strawberry cake: vanilla raspberry foam, sweet basil. This was very good; I chose the better dessert.
IMG_2150.jpeg

We enjoyed our meal at Flying Fish.

I’m loving your review and enjoy seeing the photos… I’m a tiny eater but very much a foodie, so I’m afraid of portion sizes and keep questioning my choices for my upcoming March trip.

These Flying Fish pictures have added FF to my list of places to consider.

Saturday 10/5/24 Continued
We stopped at the Boardwalk bakery for some snacks to go. We took these pictures when we got back to the villa but didn’t eat them that night. They were eaten later in the trip and one item came home to NJ with us.

An Italian Hero for Scott. He really enjoys these and gets them whenever he sees them. I am not a fan so he doesn’t need to share. He said this one was very good and he would get it again.
IMG_2153.jpeg

Opened so you can see the inners
IMG_2157.jpeg

We ordered a key lime tart. This was very good, we both enjoyed it
IMG_2152.jpeg

We also got a Snickerdoodle muffin. I wasn’t sure what to expect but loved the name so had to get it. This was better than expected even eating it once we were back home in New Jersey.
IMG_2155.jpeg

We keep hearing more about Hurricane Milton heading towards Florida. We’re trying to decide what we should do. Stay? Leave early? Go home? Go to Alabama since we missed it earlier in the trip due to Hurricane Helene. We were at Disney for Hurricane Ian in 2022 and didn’t really want to stay for another hurricane.

Hi. Thank you. Many of the portions at Disney are huge, but they are very accommodating if you want to share an entree. Unlike at home where many restaurants charge you to share an entree, Disney doesn’t (let’s not give them any ideas to start doing so). The portion sizes at Flying Fish were more reasonable than some of the other places.

Sunday 10/6/24
We started the day at Epcot then hopped to Magic Kingdom.

In Epcot walking around World Showcase, we stopped at Joffrey’s for a Coconut Banana Cream Pie Latte: A comforting blend of espresso, milk, coconut syrup, and banana syrup, garnished with whipped cream and toasted coconut flakes. It was just OK. I wanted to try it since it sounded so interesting.
IMG_2221.jpeg
IMG_2222.jpeg

At one of the food and wine festival booths in Germany Scott had a bratwurst on pretzel bread (no mustard). He enjoyed this.
IMG_2225.jpeg

When we were in Magic Kingdom, we got a Mickey pretzel. These are always good. Scott bit the ear off before I got a picture.
IMG_2230.jpeg

Sunday 10/6/24 Continued
Later that evening we drove to the Yacht Club for our dinner reservation at Yachtsman’s Steakhouse. We went early to have pre-dinner cocktails at Crews Cup Lounge (right next to Yachtsman’s Steakhouse).
IMG_2236.jpeg

Scott had a Martini. While it wasn’t on the menu anymore, I asked the bartender if they still have the Key Lime Pie Martini. He remembered it and made it for me. It was just as good as I remembered it from last trip; like drinking a piece of Key Lime Pie.
IMG_2237.jpeg

We were seated on time. The hostess came to get us at the bar and told us to take our time. That was very nice since we’ve had other places rush us.
IMG_2240.jpeg

For an appetizer we ordered the Shrimp Cocktail: Poached, housemade cocktail sauce, lemon. The cocktail sauce is very good here; that’s what makes this a great appetizer. I would prefer the sauce on the side to dip but it was still great.
IMG_2262.jpeg

One of the best things about Yachtsman’s Steakhouse is the pull apart onion rolls.
IMG_2252.jpeg

I ordered the 7-oz filet Mignon: mashed potatoes, bordelaise sauce, but substituted French fries for the mashed potatoes. I also made sure any sauce was on the side. This was a really good filet.
IMG_2268.jpeg

Scott was torn about what to order. He finally decided on the Pan-seared chicken: house made herb and potato dumplings, chicken confit, fire-roasted corn, asparagus, chicken jus. While he was originally not sure about getting the chicken at a steakhouse instead of steak, he said it was delicious and was really glad he chose the chicken.
IMG_2267.jpeg

Scott also ordered a side of creamed spinach. He enjoyed this. I don’t like creamed spinach so didn’t eat this.
IMG_2271.jpeg

We watched the Epcot fireworks from our table at Yachtsman’s Steakhouse.

For dessert we had the Yachtsman Signature Chocolate Cake: Mocha cake layers, mil chocolate pastry cream, salted caramel sauce, raspberry sauce, dulce chocolate crumble, espresso cream. This was very good.
IMG_2276.jpeg

We really enjoyed our meal at Yachtsman’s Steakhouse.
