I have a question about the dining plan. My Dr. has me on a diet in which I am not supposed to eat dairy or sugar (also wheat and red meat, but that is not as much of an issue). After looking at the restaurant menus, I noticed that 99% of desserts have either sugar or dairy. We were planning on doing the regular dining plan (won't eat enough for the deluxe) but I wonder if we would be able to substitute a appetizer in place of a dessert? I can't seem to find info on this anywhere. Thanks for your help!

It's been posted here that substituting an appetizer for a dessert on the basic plan is not permitted under any circumstances, even medical ones.

Most, if not all, restaurants offer a sugar-free dessert. If you ask, they may be able to substitute sorbet or another alternative.

My DH also has dietarty issues with desserts but last year they would give him a bowl of fruit if he asked because couldn't eat anything on the regular dessert menu.

My mom is a diabetic and was told the same thing. She was offered a sugar free dessert or fresh fruit at every restaurant. Appetizers are not being allowed for any reason. I believe there have been some posts made by WDW restaurant CMs here on the board about this topic and they have said that trying to make these types of exceptions are now grounds for termination for the CM.

Think about it, per government guidelines CMs can not ask for proof of a disability, so in the same vein neither could a restaurant ask for proof of dietary restrictions. Everyone that decided they wanted an appetizer instead of a dessert in a particular restaurant could just say they had a dietary restriction and WDW would not be able to ask for proof of said diet restriction. If they make an allowance for one, they would have to make allowances for all and there would be those that would lie and take advantage of it.

thanks for the help! I didn't know I could ask for fruit, so I'll be sure to do that.

Also when you call to make your ADR's have the CM make a note of your dietary restrictions.
Also there are numbers you can call to make special requests at different restaurants... many of the chefs are VERY accomodating.

If you make a note of dietary restrictions on your reservation, most likely the chef will come right to your table and discuss it with you. This happened to us at Ohana... They are very accomodating.
