Restaurant Reviews

Sat. Feb. 1-Friday Feb. 7- Please keep in mind that I was 21 weeks pregnant at this time. My tastes may be a little ‘off’ at the moment and I was not able to enjoy wine or alcoholic drinks with any of the meals (this could seriously affect my ratings….A good glass of wine (or 4 glasses) can make anything taste good…LOL).

Cast- DH (late 20’s), myself (late 20’s), 2 yo DD

Sat. Feb. 1- 2:00 PM- late lunch at Kona Café- No PS

**Potstickers, sticky wings, crab cakes, and ko ko puffs all good. My DH still raves about the burger that he had there. The service was good too. Rating out of 10: 8

Sat. Feb. 1- 7:00 PM- Dinner at O’Hana’s- with a PS

**I was not overly impressed. The salad made a good impression on me. None of the other appetizers really thrilled me though. The steak was good. The dipping sauces were good. But nothing was outstanding. The shrimp was particularly too spicy for me, and I think that my DH found the meats to be too under-done. The service though was GREAT, and we got to watch the fireworks with the music piped in. Rating out of 10: 7

Sun. Feb 2- 7:00 AM- Room Service from Kona

**I had to try the Tonga Toast and could not get a PS at Kona early enough to still make it to MK EE, so we ordered it from room service. Guess what? I didn’t like it. I have no idea what is wrong with me. It was way too rich and sweet. Inedible for me Rating out of 10: <4

Snack: MK-11:00 AM
**Dole Whip….pinapple/vanilla swirl. I didn’t like it. I don’t see what all the hoopla was about. What’s wrong with me? Great CM at the stand though. Rating out of 10: 5

Sun. Feb 2- 11:45 AM- Crystal Palace Lunch- Got PS at 11:00 by walking up to the window.

**We had dinner here once before but my DH didn’t really find too much that he liked that first time. We found the food much better this time. I remember the salmon, and the sandwich fixings, and the mashed potatoes, and the desserts….I’m sure that there was more. The food was good. The service was acceptable, but not outstanding. The character interaction was BAD. It took FOREVER to see all the characters. We were sitting there long after we had finished eating and still hadn’t seen Pooh and Tigger yet. PLEASE….I beg of you… wait for the characters to come to your table. Do not grab them out of turn. EEEEK!!! I think we were there until 1:30 PM or something ridiculous like that. Ughhh….. Rating out of 10: 7 (would have been higher with better character interaction)

Sun. Feb 2- 7:30 PM- Artist Point- Had PS

**I was disappointed here also. I had the cedar plank salmon. My DH had the buffalo. We shared a sausage appetizer. None of us found the dishes to be spectacular. I probably should have tried something else. The salmon actually made me sick later that night. Probably a pregnancy thing. We did however have the cobbler and YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY……The service was acceptable, but not outstanding. Rating out of 10: 7 (would have been lower without the cobbler).

Mon. Feb 3- 10:00 AM- Breakfast at Captain Cooks- No PS

**We had croissant, bacon, French toast sticks, all fine….easier on the pocketbook too. Rating out of 10: 7 (would have been lower except that it was worth the $$$ spent).

Mon. Feb 3- 2:00 PM- Late lunch at Beaches and Cream- No PS

**No trouble getting a table. The service bordered on bad. We had burgers, fries, cherry and vanilla cokes and the No Way Jose….all was fine, but nothing spectacular. I guess that I just expect good food if I’m going to be paying high prices Rating out of 10: 7 (almost not worth the $$$).

Mon. Feb 3- 9:30 PM- Late dinner takeout from Spoodle Window- No PS
**Greek salad (good), pizza (fine)….. Rating out of 10: 7 (worth the $$$ spent).

Tues. Feb 4- 7:30 AM- Breakfast from Boardwalk Bakery - No PS

**Chocolate Croissant (good) Rating out of 10: 7 (worth the $$$ spent).

Tues. Feb 4- 2:00 PM- Lunch at counter at Prime Time - No PS

**I was by myself but wanted to sample the food from Prime Time so I sat at the bar. PB&J shake (very good), and fried chicken with mashed potatoes (OK). Still haven’t found anything delicious. Service good. Rating out of 10: 7 (almost not worth the $$$).

Tues. Feb 4- 5:00 PM- Snack at Japan take-out- No PS
**Rainbow Kaki-Ghori (sp?)- Didn’t fall in love with this one either. Just OK. Rating out of 10: 7 (worth the $$$ spent).

Tues. Feb 4- 7:30 PM- Dinner at LeCellier- No PS

**We tried this place for lunch once before and did not particularly like it (had even tried the cheese soup), but I thought based on the reviews that I would give it another shot for dinner this time. I made sure to try the mushroom fillet and even added on a lobster tail at the recommendation of the server. My DH, I believe, had a strip steak. Once again….we found nothing special about this meal whatsoever. The service was good, but just not worth the money. We didn’t even try dessert. Rating out of 10: 7 (almost not worth the $$$).

Wed. Feb 5- 7:30 AM- Breakfast from Boardwalk Bakery- No PS

**Chocolate and Vanilla pretzel (pretty good) Rating out of 10: 8 (worth the $$$ spent).

Wed. Feb 5- 11:00 AM- Lunch from Coral Reef- No PS
**Seated by the tank (yeah!!). We ate here for lunch last time and WE FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS PLACE. It is what ‘turned us on’ to dining around the world in the first place. We had hoped that this meal would salvage our dismal week of dining, but they changed the menu or something. I did have the scallop appetizer that was in a delicious sauce, but then I wanted a shrimp dish since that is what I had had on the previous trip. The only shrimp dish that I could find was Cajun. I should have known better. The waiter even recommended the mahi-mahi (always listen to your server), but I insisted on the Cajun shrimp…dumb, dumb, dumb. My DH had the steak (I’m thinking he would have been much happier with the chicken), and we both came away disappointed. The dessert helped (Sorbet and THE CHOCOLATE WAVE…..YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY), but we were quite disappointed with all of our meals thus far (except maybe Kona). Rating out of 10: 7.5 (The chocolate wave helped raise this score).

Wed. Feb 5- 8:30 PM- Take out from ESPN- No PS

**Burgers and Fries (good)…and easier on the pocketbook. Rating out of 10: 7.5 (worth the $$$ spent).

Thurs. Feb 6- 11:00 AM- Lunch from Fultons- No PS

**I don’t know why we continued to torture ourselves but I had really wanted to try Fultons so we convinced ourselves to try it. It was good, but not excellent. I had the lobster bisque and the crab claws. My DH had the fish and chips. It was all good. The service was good. It was expensive. Rating out of 10: 7 (almost not worth the $$$).

Thurs. Feb 6- 8:00 PM- Dinner from Bomas- No PS

**I’m glad that we continued to try because Boma’s was a pleasant suprise. I tried a scoop of everything that I could and really liked some of it, and was just moderately happy that I had tried the others, but I really don’t think that you could go wrong with this place. Very good. My DH loved the pork. LOVED IT!! Said he couldn’t stop eating it at one point. I got full. It was a good value. Good service. The desserts are DELICIOUS. I love the zebra domes. Rating out of 10: 8.5 (would have been higher if I could have had wine…I’m sure…LOL).

Fri. Feb 7- 8:00 AM- Continental Breakfast at the hotel-good

Fri. Feb 7- 12:30 PM- Pizza Hut Buffet offsite-we have stopped trying…..LOL

Fri. Feb 7- 4:30 PM- Snack from France Pastry Shop

**The Napoleon (sp?) dessert….YUMMMY>>>>>>>they all look heavenly. Couldn’t eat it all.

Fri. Feb 7- 7:00 PM- Dinner at Ackershus (sp?)

**Good buffet. I guess that we have found that the buffets are more for us this time around. The last time it was the complete opposite. Not sure what was up with that. I found things that I liked/didn’t but it was a good value. I tried the rice cream, but guess what? I didn’t like it. I have no idea what is wrong with me. LOL Rating out of 10: 8

On the last trip, I found the buffet restaurants to be just fine but found the food at the sit-downs to be spectacular. I could not find any meals at the sit-downs that I really liked this time. They were all expensive and disappointing, thus making the idea of the buffets more appealing to me….LOL. It was all fine…I just think that I could have been just as happy with counter and/or buffets and I would have spent a lot less money. Do, however, keep in mind that I was not allowed to partake in alcohol (which makes everything taste better…LOL), and may have certain food aversions at the moment…..LOL.

3 notables that I sadly was not able to make it to (and haven’t been lucky enough to ever have visited) are California Grill, Flying Fish, and Yachtsman. They all sound appealing to me and we just weren’t able to fit them in. I’m sure that one of them would have been a hit. Oh well…I’ll wait until I can enjoy wine again……LOL.

WE had the same experience this trip. The sit downs were good but the prices are nuts! For the price I expect much better. I had a very good filet at Narcosse's for 30.oo that came with Potatos AuGratin. No salad no veggies. I believe you could order beans for extra but I really wasn't paying attention. My meal at Boma's was just as good and had much more variety. Maybe our mistake was eating at Bomas first everything else fell a little flat after that. Towards the end of our trip I started to cancel our ps's . I knew the prices, I had paid them in the past but this time I felt "taken." WE had several counter service meals that were as good as sit downs.

Thanks for the incredibly detailed review! I really enjoyed reading it. :) I have yet to try Coral Reef (at least not since 1983!) or Boma. I'm anxious to give them a try, especially after your review.

Welcome home!

Thanks for the reviews--maybe we'll return to the Coral Reef again. been awhile, and your review sounded quite good.

Thanks for the reviews. I hope you had a fun trip, despite some of your less then spectacular meals.

Glad you enjoyed Boma - my favorite buffet! Also, you cannot go wrong with the appetizers and desserts at Kona! ;)

Misti....I would not hesitate to recommend Boma. I would think that there would really be something for everyone.

Misti & Uncleromulus==The Coral Reef...I believe could be hit or miss. Our first time was a definite hit. The sauces there are just unbelievably good. I believe that I heard that the chef came from Citricos?? Not sure about that. But you can just tell that if you order the right thing...then it would be a delicious meal. Our first one was.

Krissalee==Definitely a good time. The weather and crowd levels were perfect. My weight and pocket book just have taken a serious hit and I guess I regret the over-indulgence with the meals....LOL Definitely can't complain though. A wonderful time.

My DD and I ate at the Coral Reef for lunch last August. I had the Mahi Mahi and the Chololate Wave and thought the meal was fantastic. My DD had a pasta dish and the kid's peanut butter dessert. She didn't care much for the dessert, but the view right at the aquarium wall was great! Fun and delicious meal, but guess we'd better stick with the fish menu. Diana

My sister and B-I-L just returned from the world last night. They reported very positively on Coral Reef. Had table right by tank which made the atmosphere really neat to them. Had lobster and I think Salmon (?).

Thanks for writing the reviews. Always like to hear what people's experiences are.
