Dining Plan QS Substitutions?

I'm obsessively planning our dining at Disney World for this Sept. Trying to make 2QS stretch for 3 people, most days- (5y/o in tow), and we certainly don't need dessert multiple times a day... So, was wondering about some substitutions.

-BOG- can we sub our dessert for soup or veggies?
-Yorkshire Fish Shop- can we sub our dessert for more fries or another piece of fish?
-Columbia Harbor House- can we sub our dessert for soup?
-Pizzafari- can we sub dessert for garlic knots or soup?
-Flame Tree BBQ- can we sub dessert for onion rings or pork chili cheese fries?
Thanks for your help...

Is the 5 year old not staying with you? Everyone in the room has to be on the plan or nobody can be.

BoG--is this lunch or dinner? For lunch you can. For dinner, it's iffy. You MIGHT be able to get something other than the dessert, but it's up to them what they offer. ETA: Just noticed you said QS, so yes you can do this at lunch. Disregard the dinner comments.
Yorkshire--fries, yes, another piece of fish, I don't think so. It has to be a snack item on their menu.
CHH and Pizzafari--you should be good for both of those
Flame Tree--onion rings or regular fries yes, the pork chili cheese fries should be allowed, but there have been reports that they do NOT allow this. I continue to say that if I wanted to do this, I'd have my DDP brochure with me and point out the wording to them.

Thanks so much, very helpful! Yes our 5y/o is on the plan with us. But we certainly don't need 3meals with desserts at every sitting so at the QS restaurants I plan on sharing with my son. We obviously won't be sharing our TS meals, just imagine our appetites will be tempered by the heat.

You should have no problems sharing two QS meals with 3 people at most places. That's what we do with basically 3 adults, and have done it since we had the 5 year old child with two adults. Even if you get the desserts there is usually enough food at most places to split the meals. When my daughter was 5, it was hard to finish 2 QS meals with three people most of the time.

We do this with our 5 yo as well. There are a few exceptions where we all want something really different and don't wan to compromise, but for the most part we only order 2 meals at a time. That extra credit can then be used towards breakfast or sometimes an extra meal later in the day that we all split. Also, the heat does play a big part when at the parks.

Does anyone know if you can sub a side item or bottled water at cosmic rays instead of dessert?

You can choose any item marked as a snack for dessert. Doesn't matter if it is dessert, side or drink, it just needs the purple DDP logo
And this applies at any Quick Service location. Disney wants you to order the drink because it is cheap, but with every adult quick service meal at lunch or dinner you can choose 2 items marked with the purple snack logo. At breakfast you can choose 1 snack credits item.

Am I understanding this correctly that instead of our drink that comes with dining plan we can select a side or snack as long as it has snack symbol? This would be great because we aren't big soda drinkers...

Yes, but this applies to quick service credits only (not table service).

Perfect! Thanks! So we could theoretically get 2QS breakfasts at our resort, use our refillable mugs and add two "side" items in place of drinks?

Yes each breakfast comes with a drink and that can be substituted for something that is a snack credit. You can use your refillable mug at your resort or any other Disney resort.

So you can get an entree and 2 items labelled as snacks instead of the dessert and drink? If so, that would be awesome!

We did this in 2015, and had no problems substituting at the QS restaurants. Sometimes we'd add a free cup of water, and do an entree, dessert, and side with our QS credit. I do not drink a lot of soda, so I love being able to substitute.

We are planning to do lots of substituting when we are there in September! We are a family of 5 with 3 kids 10, 13, 16. If I get the large drink, I can easily share it with the 10 yr old (he's the only other family member besides me who likes Diet Coke) then get another side. Also, we found when we went in 2010 we RARELY had room for those deserts, so just getting 4 meals with some extra sides should feed us all easily!
I'm so glad I come on these boards and learn all these useful tidbits!
