Can someone explain please?
In the 2011 Dining Plan Brochure - Table Service Meals
Why under Lunch/Dinner it says Appetizer (Kids 3-9)
Why do the children get an appetizer and not the adults?

Last time we were at WDW and had Dining Plan, Adult Meals included an Appetizer, Entree AND Dessert !!! No More though, huh?

Can we get an appetizer instead of a dessert ???

THANKS FOR REPLIES

A kids' "appetizer" is not the same as an adult's. Basically, a kids' meal is an entree plus two "others", which are labeled as "appetizer" and "dessert", but I've found you can mix-and-match them.

You cannot swap an adult dessert for an appetizer under any circumstances.

Kids appetizer is typically celery & carrots with ranch, or apple slices, some places have a soup or a salad.

Bummer though for Adults.....I would rather sample a yummy appetizer then a dessert.....
Wait A Minute!!! Did I just say that!!
Dessert's gotta be just as scrumptious!!

I just wish we could chose one or the other; for example - We have 4 adults in our group and it would be nice to share 2 Apps & 2 Desserts.
Seems 4 desserts is alot....Now that would be a good plan!

No, you can't swap a dessert for an appetizer. Which is why I prefer either the DxDP, or simply going OOP. (We seldom have any desire to have a dessert for each person, for each meal. But we do like appetizers at good restaurants).

And as others have said, the kid's appetizer is really more like a side dish in most places-- simply carrots or apples, etc.

Some of the signature restaurants have "real" appetizers for the kids.

Sorry - no swapping your dessert for an appetizer on the basic plan under any circumstances.

As far as the why of kids still getting appetizers, that came from Disney's healthier meals push - the vegetable portion of the meal is usually the appetizer on most kids' menus, most often either salad or veggie sticks with dip. Without the "appetizer", many kids meals would just be pasta or pizza or hot dog and dessert, with no vegetable at all.

This is why Disney doesn't allow you to swap. One person would get the appetizer and share, the other the dessert and share. Plus appetizers cost more than desserts.

Many kids meals have a package at table service restaurants that is called a complete meal, which is why appetizers are included. Disney does this to try to get as many healthy items in the food group as possible to kids. Especially since non-healthy foods tend to appeal to most kids, a healthy appetizer/snack can be snuck in until the less healthy food arrives. If they are hungry enough, they just might eat it. These appetizers are usually soups, vegetables or another somewhat healthy item. They are not typically cheese fries or any other less than healthy item you would find on an adult's menu. The portions are very small and also designed to get kids eating as soon as possible (to help Moms and Dads out). My son used to whine when he was hungry and was not interested in waiting. I found that a piece of bread, crackers or something very small kept him happy. Disney knows kids like no one else. It wants to keep kids (and their parents) happy. If the kids do not order a complete meal, they will usually allow them to order a separate appetizer to fulfill both purposes. The deluxe dining plan does include the appetizer. I think Disney separated the plans a few years back to give people options. People who do not want three meals a day or are not big eaters (getting appetizers and desserts at each meal) can now order the less expensive dining plan. I think Disney needs to create another dining plan that gives two table service meals a day for people who do not like counter service but cannot handle three large meals a day and are not interested in having signature meals everyday either! If Disney allowed substitutions for a more expensive appetizer over a cheaper dessert, I am thinking the price per day would go up. Many people skip the dessert (since they do not want to tip on something they are not interested in consuming) and this saves Disney money. If they were spending more money, they would more than likely charge more money. I know some people would be fine with that, so maybe they should introduce yet another slightly more expensive plan that allows you to choose between an appetizer and dessert. I hope you have a great anniversary. Caribbean Beach is a great resort. We enjoyed both our stays there.

So, do kids get a dessert with their meal too, small ice cream scoop or anything. I guess the kids could eat the adult desserts.

OK, as much as dessert is yummy....Appetizers are more creative, I guess.
But, another poster mentioned, Apps do cost more.

Really, Deluxe Dining Plan??

Really, Deluxe Dining Plan??

The (basic) Disney Dining Plan (DDP) provides 1 TS, 1 CS, and 1 snack credit per person, per night.

The Deluxe plan (DxDP) provides 3 meal credits, each of which can be used for TS or CS, and 2 snack credits per person, per night, plus 1 resort mug per person. When using a TS credit at an "ala carte" restaurant for lunch or dinner, DxDP also includes an appetizer for adults. The upgrades cost is a little over $30/night for adults and less than $10/night for kids.

As you may note, DxDP is a lot of food. It can be a good idea if you want to do a lot of character meals and signature dining/dinner shows (2 credit meals).

The kids do get a very small dessert. The options are usually limited to a small scoop of ice cream (which my son does not like believe it or not) or something else that is small. Some restaurants will allow you to substitute a child's dessert for cookies or something similar. Not all restaurants have subsititutions available, but it never hurts to ask. If your kid does not like the desserts on the kids plan, the adult ones are large enough to share. The only problemn is ordering something a younger kid would like. When there can be a large (more adult) dessert to sample, it is not fun to order one your kid wants. I did it many times though to not add to my costs by ordering my son his own chocolate cake and get myself cheesecake or a sundae. I would just order the chocolate cake for us to share. My husband usually got something more adveturous and would give me a bite!

And good to keep in mind

Hey, here is a question: refresh my memory....

Do the 14 & 17 year old boys have to order off the kiddie menu....

Boys that age need more then a grilled cheese

Kids 10 and over order from the adult menu - that is the cut off age for an adult, for both the dining plans and tickets. If you're on the DDP, you will be paying the adult price for them.
