Dine and Dash (as in, not paying for your meal)

ah nothing like a thread getting hijacked or reading into a poster's true goals.

Folks, the internet (discussion boards) and texts is a poor way to communicate. It allows the the reader to give their meaning to the words instead of the composer's meaning, as words lack inference, tone, blah, blah, etc. The world would be a much better place if we quite putting what we hear (through our filters) instead of what is actually being said.

OP, I agree that it is odd that someone would spend close to $300 to enter the park, only to skip out on their food bill. For me, I am always amazed how people try to save a buck on the Disney trip, both legally (bring your own bun and order a double cheeseburger) and illegally. From experience, people who are concerned with saving a buck here and buck there, tend to have larger spending issues and probably should wait on going on an expensive trip. But hey I digress as I do not want the hijacking of threads to continue.

I also applaud you for paying attention to your surrounds and the people around you. It is foolish to think bad things can't or won't happen at WDW. More people need to be able to come forward and speak up with people are breaking the law and rules.

I've never waited tables but I always heard that most restaurants charge the waiter if they have a customer skip out on a check.

Does any one know if Disney does that? I can't imagine they do. Judging by their prices and pay rates, it would be equivalent to indentured servitude. :lmao:

I would not assume anyone wearing team affiliated clothing was actually from that city. My parents lived in PA for many years but now live in FL. They still wear Eagles and Phillies shirts and hats once in awhile. My friend is a huge Steelers fan but lives in WA. She dresses her daughter in some sort of Steelers related clothing almost every day. My SIL is a Packers fan and wears the clothes, plus puts a Packers hat on my nephew whenever they leave the house and she lives near Tampa. In fact I don't currently know anyone who actually cheers for the team closest to where they live lol!

I was a waitress for over ten years and never had a table walk out without paying. I have had tables argue over the gratuity on a large party or not leave a tip, but never just flat out left without paying. That's pretty low and I'm feeling pretty lucky now that I never had it happen to me.

Precisely the kind of garbage I go to WDW to escape.

Exactly!

We see this kind of stuff quite often where we live as well as many other unpleasant things. We like to think of WDW as our escape from reality. But I do know that bad things can, and do, happen there, too. Just on a smaller scale when compared to the average city.

What do the ladies sizes and or ethnicities have anything to do with the story? It may have been classless for them to dine and ditch, but it was equally classless to imply their weight had anything to do with their actions.. Kind of like if someone says "I'm not saying this to be rude.." Guess what, they're about to be rude. Where you giving physical descriptions so we could be on the lookout for overweight Bears fans and steer clear?

After reading the original post, I was wondering what post number this kind would come in at. Took 11 posts, but there it was! :lmao: Dis boards are not for the sensitive folk.

Anyway, considering the fact that Disney had my photo on PhotoPass from rides that I never scanned my band at or used a FP at, I'd imagine they can track down these people - especially if they had bands on. Even more so if they used a CC. I'd imagine it's relatively common in the food industry. I never have (nor ever will) done it myself, but I can think of countless instances where I would have had the opportunity if I were that kind of person.

I spent years waiting tables, bartending then managing bars and restaurants while I was putting myself through college then my wife through grad school and nowhere did I work ever made the server pay our of pocket for the meal.

Now, it did end up costing the server SOME money in some places because those meals go down as sales. So, the waiters often have to pay a % of their sales to cover taxes, then they usually have to tip out (hostesses and bussers etc) a % as well. Usually about 3%-5% to be tipped out.

So, if their bill was $100, it costs the server about $4 to wait on them, but the restaurant almost assuredly comped the meal (as they would if someone dropped an entire tray of food), but it has to be accounted for in sales to accurately show profit and loss data.

Here, I'll fix the OP's story:

Yesterday was a holiday and I took 3 humans to a restaurant in a theme park for a meal. We were seated next to 3 other humans. They looked to be from a city seeing all of the identifying clothing.

Anyway, I noticed when they were done with their meal they were acting strange. One human put a carrying device on another human, got up, and left towards the exit. I thought nothing of it at first because maybe they needed to be somewhere or go somewhere or something. But then the other human a period of time later started looking around, and then just stared over at our waiter. As soon as the waiter turned away and left the area, the human bolted for the exit! I knew almost immediately that they were doing a "dine and dash". I saw no bill on their table, nor did I remember seeing the server bring a bill.

Haha - I knew this was coming as soon as I read the OP!

Soooooo true.

I was outside a seafood restaurant in Ocean City, MD. One of the waitresses came out crying and looking around the parking lot. She said someone skipped out on a $200 bill and it would come out of her paycheck.

One of my friends said that's typical for most restaurants. That's the only verification I had though.

Lighten up on OP. He probably didn't even notice ethnicity until Donald Sterling pointed it out. And the size of the criminals is completely relevant - suggested possible felony instead of misdemeanor.

It's insane that people are coming down on the OP for adding simple descriptions of people. When you read a book, does the author include physical descriptions of the characters, when you read an article about a crime, does the writer include a description of the person who committed it, or does a news anchor give a physical description of the person on the news who robbed the local store? It's a story, she gave a description, like any other writer would do. It lets the reader get a mental imagine of the person or people in this case who committed the crime. Stop reading into something that's not there.

Seriously?? If you witnessed a crime and were in a position to do something about it, you would stand mute? You have left me speechless. And that is really, really hard to do.

Ahh..............was I not clear???, I have reported and even blocked the door way to a table trying to duck out of pay for their meal and point out shoplifters.

I would imagine that Disney doesn't either, but I have worked places that do. I was also given a counterfeit $50 once to pay for a meal and I had to make good on it...it was a REALLY good $50, I had no clue :rotfl2:

And if you're the type of person that points out what others are doing wrong, unless it's DIRECTLY affecting you... (not indirectly), mind your own DAMN business! Glass houses.. And to the person said they'd gladly point out a shoplifter in a store, etc... Wow...

I am glad you agree......*WOW*, more people should be doing it as well.......I don't steal...so I am not worried about a glass house.:thumbsup2

The problem with that kind of policy is a $200 bill doesn't cost the restaurant $200. I have heard of some places holding the server accountable for a portion if they were negligent and not paying attention (in the bathroom smoking or outside etc), but no decent establishment would charge their server menu cost for food actually cost the restaurant significantly less.

I am sure there some mom & pops and family establishments who try stuff like that, but they soon end up on Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares.

That would essentially be the same thing as charging your employees if they break glassware or accidentally drop food. There is a certain +/- built into monthly numbers where comps are accounted for.

And why wouldn't you?

Also, regarding the OP's statements.

How would those who are offended by OP report the dine and dash to the Police? How would they ever find the criminals without size and skin color and clothing worn?

In New Orleans, our local online media outlet (nola.com) refuses to put the race of suspects in their descriptions.

Dead serious.

They will be actively hunting for a double murder suspect. List his approx height, weight, hair color, eye color, vehicle, clothing, but never EVER put their race.

It's 2014 where it's cool to be offended. Then, for others to get offended someone else got offended.

The suspect is a 25-year-old man, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs about 230 pounds, Ruple said. He has short brown hair in a flat-top and was wearing a black Sean John T-shirt with gold lettering, blue jeans and brown boots at the time of the robbery, Ruple said.
