Dilemma re Aspie son's fixation on fizzy drinks

Hobbit, are you aware of how pervasive fizzy drinks are in the US? Americans from all walks of life swill them all day long. Those who are concerned about sugar drink sugar-free versions. Those who are concerned about chemicals and health drink fizzy water and juice.

Every snack stand will have them prominently displayed. Every restaurant for every meal will have people drinking soda pop around you, even occasionally for breakfast. There will be people strolling through the parks drinking from plastic pop bottles. He is going to see it constantly.

What about Fanta Zero? It is orange flavored but with no calories.

With the majority kids that show signs of Asperger's syndrome do not like to amend in their everyday activities. The same symptom pertains to Autism also. The truth is we can make them change only with taking good care of them.

UPDATE

Our plan worked! We spoke to our son from a few weeks before we went saying that all fizzies were banned while in the US. He could have chocolate drinks or fruit juices, but not Fanta. We promised he would get one as soon as he got home, which we followed through on. It worked really well! He didn't obssess about getting the next fanta, but had the best time of his life and still talks about it! :cloud9:

Thanks for the update!!!
I'm really glad it worked for you. It's surprising at times what does work if we give it a try! Hope you took lots of pictures for him to remember the trip.

My ASD son loves soda but I don't allow it. Too many chemicals, the sugar makes him hyper, and the colorings....forget it.

I buy Poland Spring Sparkling water, and liquid stevia in a few different flavors. The bottles are expensive but last forever. You only need 5 or 6 drops in a glass for a nice flavor, too many and it's bitter.

It's his soda and he likes having a choice of different flavors. I like the no sugar, caffeine or chemicals!

You do know that stevia is processed using ethanol and methanol, along with forced crystallization, and is the chemical rebaudioside A? It's a good chemical though, showing signs of actually helping those with diabetes to regulate insulin.

To the OP - glad your plan worked! I work with students diagnosed as being on the spectrum, and they can adapt and adjust (with our support) to meet just about any occasion.
