Does anyone know if there is a way to download your digitial pictures on the boat. I was hoping they have a service where I could take my camera and burn the pictures from my camera onto a CD?

Thanks:bounce: We are on the May 22nd Western Magic.

i believe there was. cost was $15, i think. not quite sure...maybe someone else can clarify...

didn't use it...had enough memory stix. took some 300+ pix. thank goodness for digital cams! but it was nice to know that the service was available should we need to! :wave2:

Being brand new to digital, can anyone tell me how many pictures you can get onto that 15 dollar CD?

If anyone out there has an iPOD-- my bf just got one for his bday & I bought him a 5.0 megapixel camera- (which apparently takes up the most room on memory cards yuck) So I was flipping about not having enough memory to take the mandatory 6 million pics :) & we found out that you can DL the pix onto your iPOD just like any hard drive- & it can hold like THOUSANDS of pixs!!! YIPEE!! So I was either going to have to buy lots of memory cards (& those things are expensive) OR bring his laptop- & now we have to do neither- we can take the pix all day then at the end of the day transfer them onto the iPOD & have a fresh card the next morning!! Hope this helps to anyone who has an iPOD & if you don't it's a good reason to get one- PLUS you can play your iPOD through your car stereo too so that you won't need cd's anymore!! (I swear I don't work for Mac!!!):teeth:

Depending on the mega pixel of the camera and the camera settings you should be able to get 200 to 500 photos on a CD

I have a 5-mega pixel Sony and a regular CD will hold about 250 photos taken at the highest quality settings.

Hope this helps!

You will need a Belkin Media Reader in order to transfer photos from your camera to the IPOD. The Belkin Readers sell for about $100

is we bring our laptop computer with us & at the end of each day, we download all our pictures & put them on a cd. That way, the next day we start fresh & we don't spend alot of money on memory cards & we don't have to worry about not being able to take MILLIONS of pictures!

Have fun!

ksouma--

I know about the media thing- it's expensive but in the long run less than buying a whole bunch of memory cards- the 256 mem cards only hold about 100 pix at 5.0 pixels so it's worth it! :D

Thanks ksouma!
I just bought a 5 megapixel Sony and don't own a laptop, so I've been trying to decide what to do about the memory without a way to download.

At both WDW and on the DCL ship they have the ablity to download your pics onto disks. As someone mentioned before there is a price to it, but if you don't have acess to any other means thats a way to get them off your card and onto some sort of media. Just take your card to shutter on the ship, they should be able to help you out. From my understanding they are also able to do prints for you....I could be wrong about that though.

Question??? As some one mentioned above how a cd will hold 200-500 photos...my question reguarding that statement is, can the cd be added to each day, or wouldn't you have to get a new cd each time you had the new pics downloaded from your card???

I have a sony 5mp camera and a 256 card..I beleive I've been able to get more than 100 pics at the higest resolution on the cards befor having them full.

It would be best to play with your camera prior to your sail date to see how many photos your card will hold on diffrent resolution settings. I'd also suggest taking some photos of the same item at diffrent resoultions then getting them printed in a good size, possably some variying sizes to see what diffrences your camera has on diffrent resoultions.. you may be supprized to find out there's not alot of diff with standard size prints. Lower resoultions means more photos per card.

Also keep in mind how many photos you plan on taking, or would normaly take each day on a trip. I take a ton of photos...each day...so even with a 256 card that can hold hundred++ photos I didn't feel that would be enough for me, and I didn't want to be caught some place where it was inconvenent to get the card read and a cd burned so I have stocked up on a few 256 card just to be prepaired.

hope this helps..

ps forgive my spelling it is late and i'm rushing this message.:hyper:

My husband works for a photo place, so this is why I throw this out there....If you want to take lots of pictures, yes, you can change your resolution to be lower so you get more pictures. However, if you do this, remember that if you plan on enlarging any of your pictures, this is not a good idea. Your pictures will not look good enlarged if you do this.

Okay, just wanted to throw that out there.

Have fun!

Actually, I'll throw this out there- there are new devices coming on the market to address just this issue. A number of them include a screen to look at the pictures after you copy them into it.

However, with the price of camera memory falling thru the floor (a 256M chip is only $49 at a number of national retailers right now) It is simpler to just buy extra memory and download the whole bunch when you get home.

One thing to note about the camera memory, you can treat them the same way as film, when it's full you can remove it from the camera and put in a new one. You will NOT lose any pictures off it. And a digital wallet to hold said memory cards is a lot easier to bring than lugging a laptop along or having someone else burn you a cd, etc..

I have also been doing some research about digital storage devices where you can download your memory stick and store it then just reuse the memory stick. Anyone familiar with these? I plan on buying more memory sticks but still I'm afraid I will go overboard on the picture taking.

I have asked friends and at work if anyone has the mem cards that fit my camera.

My coworkers have borrowed mem cards from me all the time when they go on vacation. Better carrying a bunch of mem cards than a laptop IMHO.

We met a bunch of people on the boards and since I am so nice :hyper: I told the ones who had the digital cameras that if they brought their own CD's I would download them for them onto their CD.

I did it a couple of times and we ended up sharing pictures with each other and becoming friends.

It was a great way to get additional pictures!

This morning (5/3/04) I purchased a 128 MB memory card for $39.95 ($49.95 - $10.00 mail-in rebate) from Staples Office Supply.

I'm thinking with the 16 MB built-in to my camera, plus a 64 MB card that came with the camera plus the 128 MB I should be fine and now plan to leave the laptop at home.

$39.95 is a great price for a 128 MB!!

For Sony owners you can get a stick of 256MB on EBAY for about $50 each. If you have a 5MP camera and you get 4 of these sticks ($200) you can store about 350 photos.

The IPOD idea is great if you already have one you can simply upgrade to the adapter for about $100 and store thousands of photos. If you do not own an IPOD then that route can be a very expensive way of storing your photos. They cost about $400 for the IPOD and $100 for the adapter.

I guess it all depends on how many photos you plan on taking. The best part of a digital camera is if you take 10 photos of an event you can review them on the spot and delete the ones you do not like. Thus freeing up space on your card. I have 2 256MB sticks and a 128MB stick. I usually fill them up during the day then review them at night and delete the ones I do not like or the ones that came out bad.

I am not sure about Shutters. If they use CD/R then that CD can only be used (written to) once, if they use CD/RW then that CD can be used (written to) as many times as needed until it is full...

Does Shutters charge $15 per write to the CD or is it $15 per CD and then they write to it until full? Anyone know that answer??

Hope this helps and best of luck!

I just wanted to add that when I suggested to reduce the resolution I also suggested to get prints made in a variety of sizes...because it quality of pic you get with the diff resolution may not be all that diff. I would suggest thinking of the largest photo print that you may want from the cruise and do some sample prints of various resolutions....knowing that the lowest setting would probley not work for large prints. But if you have a middle ground you may not see much diff. at all. Alot depends on you camera and how large your photos are going to be. For example I took some photos a a 3 and 3.5 resolution setting along with the 5, enlarged them to 8x10 and theres not much diffrence in quality.

So I just wanted to clarify that I wasn't suggesting everyone decrease their resolution to save space on their memory card...but simply saying it's an option but you should think about the size of prints you may want and how well you cameras photos tune out at a lower resolution enlarged.

I will make some more comments on picture size in the camera. Two things.

First, I never use the camera's 'native' mode, I always select JPG. The file size is huge if you use the native mode. Figure out how to set this. If they'res an option for compression, set it to get the best picture quality/larger file size. Too much JPG is a bad thing. The thing with native mode is with some cameras you can manipulate the picture more afterwards. I find I never need to do this. Invest in a good digital graphics program. I recommend Paint Shop Pro 7. Things like MS Photo are ok, but do not have enough features.

Second, I have never used its highest res, I am always on the second from highest one, which is 1360x1024. I have printed off a few 8x10s and I can't find any issues with them. Printing is as much a factor when printing a picture as the picture size. You need a printer that can print photo quality. Higher the dpi it's capable of the better. But you will find yourself printing less and less photos once you figure out a good system to view them on your pc. And with some of these portable devices coming out, even less so.

Now, about memory. Memory is cheap everywhere right now, I'll include some examples. Now, don't go for this 'faster' or 'enhanced' memory unless you intend to do 100 pictures a minute or something. That's all it's good for, won't help casual picture taking any.

And these examples you can find 256m of some types for $50 as well. I always suggest caution in buying electronics off Ebay.

My favorite three places to shop for computer stuff(click the names), I can guarantee good service from any of them. These are links directly to the sections with camera memory, Know your type!

I just have to add that the best prices I have found anywhere for digi cam memory cards is Costco. :) I bought a 256 mb SD card for $64.99. You can't beat that!

Sorry, you should just follow my links up there(I actually found a bunch, here's just one) http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=295710&pfp=BROWSE

I was a digital camera guy long before digital was cool. Been in computers and electronics for about 30 years now. I'm always the first to try something neat. People used to look at me funny when I told them I could show them the picture now. They'd say things like does it develop in the camera and such. :p
