digital memory cards

I have a Kodak Easy Share for our Nov 20-26 trip. I have some 64 mb cards and a 128 mb card.

2 questions?
#1--How many memory cards do you usually take?
#2-would you take a 256 mb or 2 128 mb cards ?

I would take them all. They are small and you never know what you'll need. You can always leave some in the room each day rather than carrying them all with you. Personally, I have 2 - 256MB and 1- 16MB (came with the camera). I have a credit card size holder that fits in the camera case that can hold 6 cards. On our cruise in June, I ended up shooting well over 500 photos in 7 days.

depends on how big a picture taker you are...I took 1-256, 2-128, 1-64 and they were just barely enough (about 1000 pics). I plan on buying two more 256's for next trip. The price on them is getting so cheap, they won't be much at all next time I go!

The picture taking mistake I made this time was I only took pics of things that interested me or were artistically appealing. I found that when I got back home and were showing co-workers/friends who had never been the pics, they just didn't "get" the overall Disney vibe because I had to explain each pic. Next time I'm just gonna take pics of everything and let the pics explain themselves!!

It's amazing the damage a couple of misplaced comma's and bad grammer can do, huh?

Let me try that again....I found that when I got back home and was showing co-workers/friends, who had never been, the pics....

Much better!! Sorry everyone!!

bradyloganmom - I don't know how long you've had your digital camera, but most people find that they shoot a lot more pictures than they would with film since it doesn't cost anything. With film, you tend to limit your picture taking because you are paying for film and processing. With digital, I'll shoot lots and sort through them when I get home and just print the really good ones. So on a trip that might warrant 8 rolls of film (192 frames), you might easily shoot 3-4 times that many digital pictures so prepare accordingly.

I would take them all just to cover yourself. I have a 256 and am thinking of getting another, maybe even a 512 since we have a cruise and then Disney back to back. Plus I got an underwater housing for my camera so I will use it a lot more now. I might just stop at a Walgreens too and get a cd made in one of the machines so I can wipe out the card. I take a lot of pictures. Each night while it is charging, I sit down and go through all of the pictures, deleting the dupes, or bad ones. This frees up a lot of space.

I carry three cards when we go, 8mb, 32mb and 128mb. I would just take both to be on the safe side if I were you, but I'd only use the 256mb if I had one. What I do is take WDW pictures on the 128mb, the resort pics on the 32mb and misc things on the 8mb to keep track. We also use regular resolution when we take pictures so we can store loads of pictures. :)

Cards almost never fail but I did have one once which I had to "fix" by reformatting on my home computer. I always take two just in case, a 512mb and a 192mb.

Glad you mentioned that. At present, one of my 64 mb cards is saying it must be "reformatted" and to do that it says I must delete all pictures on it. It won't let me look at the pictures before I delete them. My camera owners manual says nothing about this.

One photography article I read (and some posts I've seen here), suggested having several smaller cards (like 128) rather than just a few large ones. That way, if something happens to the card, you won't lose so many pictures.
Someone posted once that they had a problem with a 512mb card that caused the card to be unreadable. They ended up losing almost all their pcitures.

I am only contemplating buying a digital camera at this time. I had thought that you could delete any pictures that you did not like and so that would 'free' up the memory devices. To put it another way I thought I could take several versions of a shot and delete on the spot the ones I did not like leaving room for many other shots. Please correct me if I am wrong.

If we don't want to lug a laptop along we take 4- 256s and the small card that came with the camera. I get about 150 pics/256 card and find them more than enough. I say take them all as they don't take up any room.
(I have a 4.5meg camera and shoot in fine mode- the one below best- how much you need will depend on file size you're generating)

hi,
We are taking our laptop with cd burner to move ours to disk everynight (not to the hard drive cause you never know what might happen) I have been told by a friend that you can find a place at WDW that will download them to disk for you but I'm not sure where since we dont need that. Im only taking my 256 xd card but making sure that I have at least 2 batteries with me every day

You are right, you can do that. It's great for deleting the ones with obvious problems - way out of focus, took a picture with your finger in the middle, etc., but it's not always practical to do:
- some of the pictures that don't look really good on the tiny camera screen look fine on the computer, and some that look fine on the tiny screen are not so good when looked at in a larger mode.
- it takes time to look thru and delete pictures, so you might not want to take the time during the day while you are in the parks to do it.
- deleting pictures uses up the battery.

You should have at least one extra card with you so that if something happens to the first card, you are not finished taking pictures for the day.

Sue, thank you for the practical and useful information. I love electronics and even I have problems with each new item that comes on the scene. We are retired and I cannot waste money on mistakes anymore. Gotta save for our next trip to DW and there is always a next trip. LOL
