I just ordered a digital camera for our upcoming trip, the Canon A70 and will be purchasing the Canon Elura mini DV camcorder very soon. My question is, will the humidity in Florida cause the cameras to malfunction? I have a friend that just came back from Jamaica and she had some problems with her Fuji camera.

Unless you plan to use it in the rain I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you're really paraniod about damaging your new toy you can get an underwater housing for it. For your camera it should be Canon model number WP-DC700 and should cost about $170. In the housing it is almost indestructable. You could take it to the water parks without any worries.

The only problems i have had in the past is with dew inside my camcorder.bring it from a cold room to hot outside always caused dew.Now that was with a vhs-c not sure if the same problem happens with ditigal camcorders.

I used a digital camera last Dec., and had no problems at all. This was even with the different temperatures that they experience that time of year. It did'nt fog up or anything. Worked perfectly. I also took a Nikon SLR 35mm, and one morning the lens did fog up, but I was able to clear it up real quick. I never have had any working problems with any cameras I have taken. I have never used a video camera there personally, but my family members have, and they never experienced any problems with them. So best of luck to you.

Castillo Mom,
I was wondering how you like the Canon A70? I was thinking of buying it for my upcoming trip to WDW, but I wanted to have some feedback on it first. What do you think?

Thanks,
Kristin

Kristin, I haven't had the chance to use it yet since I ordered it and haven't received it. But I'll be sure to post as soon as I try it. I did a lot of research on digital cameras and finally decided on the Canon A70 based on quality, features and price. From what I've read, you get a lot of bang for the buck.

I had a problem with my Panasonic mini-dv camcorder on my trip in November. Going from my air conditioned room to outside caused condensation that made the camera malfunction and I was not able to record my MIL's birthday illuminations cruise.:( This only happened once, but as Murphy's law would have it, it was the worst time to occur. My digital camera lens would fog up after I left the room, but within five minutes it was fine.

When researching my digi camera (Canon powershot-love it!) I found out that most of them come "fog resistant" (I cant think of the technical term for it). That is: when coming in from the humidity into the AC they wont fog. If your camera is a good one you should be fine. Have a great time and take lots of pix!!!
Oh and take an extra memory card with you just in case. To transfer your pix to a disc in the "world" is expensive and takes like 15-30 mins. Time is money!::yes::

Last September my digital camera never fogged up, but the lens on my SLR camera did a few times. It would take a while to de-fog (invariably at a time when I really wanted to be taking some pictures  :D ), but after that it would be fine.

This always happened to us with our video camera. I finally read a few tips:

-move the camera out to the car when you wake up, so it has time to 'adjust' to the temperature before you get to the parks.

-if you are staying in a room with a balcony, leave the camera out there overnight (hidden, and in a large ziploc in case of rain)

-try keeping it in a large ziploc in the room overnight- that might help a bit.
