This trip was preceded by a spending spree on a digital camera, a Canon A70 with a 16MB and 256MB memory cards. Decided not to take my laptop with us to download memory card as I had planned to use the Walmart service.

After the first couple of days the camera was nearly full (175) so headed off to Walmart to download. No problems, took a few minutes to order the CD and select a few prints. The CD and four 4X6 prints came to about $4.50. I didn't delete the card until I had picked up the CD and checked the prints were OK. All fine and dandy.

A couple of days later another download required, this time 215, so needed to be on 2 CD's(they only take 200 prints a CD). Selected a couple of sample prints and ordered an 8X10 of Charlotte with Cinderella, a beautiful photo if I do say so myself. Again, I didn't delete the memory card, just in case. My caution was rewarded upon picking up the prints, they hadn't been printed, there was only 1 CD with half the prints missing and the 8X10 hadn't had the red eye corrected. After repeated attempts to retransfer the card (the Walmart PC was not responding to transfers - a common error apparently) I gave up and requested a refund from customer service, intending to get the 8X10 reprint from Jessops when we got home. Off to Eckerds instead, I waited whilst the prints were transfered and then checked the CD myself to ensure all 215 prints were there. All OK so deleted the memory card and went away happy.

This is where I made my BIG MISTAKE. After getting home I transferred all the CD's to the laptop and started sorting the prints, this is when I discovered that Eckerds had saved my 1.5MB pictures as heavily compressed 256k versions. I have doubts that I will be able to make decent 8X10's from these smaller files.

Further trips to Walmart resulted in the prints being transferred correctly as ordered.

My advice would therefore be

1. Take 2 memory cards of sufficient size to hold enough prints for 2 days out, to allow for delays in transferring
2. ALWAYS check the CD for completeness and format before deleting the memory card
3. If you want specific prints to be of the best quality then use the Kodak print station in Walmart and edit/crop/enchance the print yourself before transferring to be processed. The staff in Walmart are very efficient but not technical enough to solve every problem you may have.

Luckily I didn't lose and prints, which would have been heartbreaking, so no real harm done.

... I've been pondering how to download pics safely, as I have a Minolta DiMAGE 7i camera for work and thought to take it out next time.... however, having read of your issues, I have a feeling I may rely yet again on my trusty 35 mm compact!

I'd definately take the digital over the 35mm, the sheer amount of pictures you can take for 'free' outweighs the small issue of having to carefully check the transfers. The added benefit of seeing the picture immediately is worth it's weight, characters hands in front of faces, over/under exposure is never an issue, catching the smile of a wriggling 3 year old.........all can be spotted and retaken rather than the disappointment and expense of finding out a few weeks later.

I took over 800 pictures in 2 weeks, that in film and processing would cripple you on 35mm, on digital it comes in at around $20.

Fair point. My bro recently bought some 256meg cards at a camera shop after doing a pricematch on amazon and only paid £20 ish each... may get a couple of those and try to limit the total pics to full card capacity Not sure if I could edit/view 800 pics when jetlagged!)

Hi
Just a quick question, was there any reason on why you didn't take a laptop? Thinking of taking mine to download the photos.

I took my digital camera when we went to WDW last month, 128mb and 64mb cards, a couple of blank CDs, and a 13 dollar USB Smart Media reader I picked up in Vegas.

Instead of Wal Mart or Eckards, I visited the internet cafe in the Lake Beuna Vista Outlet Mall, close to the TCD welcome centre, and burned my own CDs for 5 bucks a time (30 mins on an XP laptop). The proprietor had no problems in letting me plug my own card reader into his PC.

I only took about 400 snaps, and 3 minutes of video clips. That meant only one visit to the internet cafe. I had the prints I wanted printed back in the UK at Boots. They're doing an offer at the moment, 50 digital prints for 5 pounds.

Worked for me

Cheers

I took my digital and 35mm cameras.
Used the digital for the snap happy walking around, taking photos of everything in sight.
When it came to the kids posing with characters, I used my 35mm.
Far better quality pictures.
When I got home and got them developed, I scanned them all and along with the digital photos, made a slide show which plays along with some Disney music.
Any time I'm feeling down or in need of some Disney adrenalin, on goes the slide show. Works every time.

The quality of your digital vs 35 mm pics comes down to the pixel count of your digital camera. Anything over 3megapixels would be about equal to 35mm up to say a 6"x4" print which would probably be enough in most cases.

With a Dimage 7i such as Mike Jones has ( 5 megapixels ) it would certainly be as good as 35 mm up to at least 12" x 10" and probably beyond.

I still like my 35mm camera too.... but the more I see the abilities of digital photography the more it impresses me !!

BTW Mike...........any idea where your brother got his cards from???......Sounds like a good deal,

I didn't take the laptop due to carrying enough onboard already plus the insurance risk. Safer all round to spend a few $.

I remember seeing a previous post about that internet cafe, one to remember for our next vist, thanks!. Gives me somehtinh to do while the wife shops..........

Mike - our kid did a search on Amazon and came up with a 256 meg card deal at £20! He took a print of this into his local Jessops and they price matched it... however, I've tried to repeat this today and best Amazon deal now £42 for 256MB and £20 for 128MB so I guess the deal was temporary! (£20 for 128mb doesn't seem bad though?)

I'm now a complete digital convert and wouldn't even consider a 35mm again.

If you have a decent camera (I reckon at least 3 mp) and just as importantly a good printer and good quality paper you'll get 7 x 5's that are virtually indistinguishable from 35mm, - you may even be able to achieve 10 x 8, - I have!!

Then add in the benefit of being able to digitally edit your results and I don't think there's any comparision. Removing red eye is but one example.

I've just managed to produce a good shot of main street from the railway station at night, - having 'removed' that darn flagpole a good shot looks even better.

I always try and carry enough memory to see me through, - at least 256 and usually more (depends on resolution, I don't shoot everything at high end). It tends to be so cheap over there picking up a new card isn't expensive anyway.

You might guess I'm biased but my experience with both formats leaves me convinced, - it all comes down to personal preference.

My DH says Argos were doing a deal on memory, but they were out of stock in our nearest branch. May be worth a look.

I think we're going to take the laptop. I can also pretend I might just do a bit of studying whilst out there. How likely is that?! :hyper:
