Different UY vs. Same UY

We are under contract for an October use year at SSR. I know that the general advice and recommendation is to do the same use year, same title so that the contracts can merge for booking purposes.

BUT>>>>what if you see a deal you want to make an offer on and its a different use year? Is it that terrible? Does it make booking a nightmare?

Pros vs. cons of different use years please.

Thanks a million!

Probably not too bad if there are enough points in each contract to use them to book different trips independently. Say one contract for spring travel and the other for fall; or one larger contract to use most of the time, plus another small contract somewhere expensive to bank/borrow and grab something high demand every second or third year.

Would be a moderate to big PITA if you have to transfer between contracts frequently or every time you book a vacation. Main reason is because the online system isn't friendly to point transfers (you can't see the transferred points even though they are there, and you can't book the transferred points online.)

One screw up and you will know if saving the money was worth it. :goodvibes

If you are going to combine points it might be a hassle. If you are going to use them as 2 different things, at least the majority of the time, it wont matter.

Combining them - possible PITA - so the question is how often might you do this.

I may purchase a different UY, but it is not out of a better contract or anything.
So I have been having the same questions.

Can you live with more than membership and make it work, sure. We do because we didn't know any better when we first bought.

My thoughts now are that there are so many things that can make owning a pain, travel issues, booking issues, policy changes, booking competition, website issues, account issues, MB issues, MDE issues, FP issues, long telephone hold times, crowds, rooms that need cleaning and/or maintenance, late room ready, and not getting your room request.

Why add something to the mix if you don't have to?

Thanks - you guys convinced me. I need it nice and easy. I will keep looking for a good October deal.

We've just recently run into the issue of wanting to use our points within the last two months of our Use Year (based on when we need to take work vacation that needs to be used up or we lose it). For that reason, I would look for a summer use year for our next contract (Instead of Feb) and use those points independently of our other contract.

I would say it depends how you are going to use them. If you envisage using both UY for the same trips staying in the same accommodations then I would hold out for same.

If you envisage using them separately it isn't important. We have WDW points and VGC points which we only use at home resort. We have same UY because it worked out that way but it wouldn't have been a big deal if we hadn't.

I have a Feb UY for our March trips and Sept UY for our November trips.

If you take 2 trips a year then 2 UY may be better.

An October UY would have covered your preferred vacation dates.

Is it easier to have all the same use year? Sure. We have two different UYs simply because we came across a deal on a contract that we did not want to pass up. It has not been an issue for us thus far.

yes, it's easier to have the same UY where all contracts are under the same membership. all the points work together seamlessly at 11 months out with the same home resort, or at 7 months out with different home resorts.

with 2 UYs, you have 2 banking windows and memberships to keep up with. when booking a stay, you are like 2 separate owners...so you can book 3 nights with 1 contract and 4 nights with the other contract and ask MS to link the separate stays so you can stay in the same room, but you cannot pool pts together as if it were one contract without transferring. and even if you transfer pts over to the 2nd contract, you cannot borrow transferred pts, so if you wanted to use all of the pts for one big trip, it's a pain.
