difference in cherries

K Im dense - just recently got started eating fresh fruit and I have to say it is yummy

What is the difference in the cherries? Last weeks batch seemed lighter red and smaller. This weeks batch is darker red & larger.
Whats a bing? What other kind is there?
Do you prefer one over the other? Is 1 sweeter?

As far as I know Bing cherries are just the name of the cherry.Ya know like apples have different names??? The ones that you saw this week will be sweeter.Either they stayed on the tree longer or they have been ripening more in a warehouse. Also they could have come from a different region that had different weather conditions.The ones that are lighter red will be more tart. The darker ones will be sweeter.

There are also some called (I think) Queen Anne. They have some yellow in them and to me are more mellow and less tart.

Being a southern gal I thought I had stumbled upon a new fruit when I saw some ladies munching through a huge bag of these Rainier cherries- it never occurred to me to eat them outside of a pie. But I swannee if those Washington folks don't have the monopoly on varieties of apples and cherries! There was a King Cherry, Rainier Cherry, I can't even remember the names- but there would be a "cherry bar" in the summer time and you could mix and match them- I tried some Rainier cherries down here and they weren't nearly as good. Let us know if you find any others worth trying- Those pictures make me crave them!!
