Difference Between Spa & Salon Pedicure

I noticed that both the Vista spa and the salon offer pedicure's on the Disney Magic. I am thinking about booking one for my upcoming trip, but I was wondering what are the differences between the two places (besides the cost of course).

I know the pedicure stations at the salon are the traditional ones like they have in most salons, but what kind of pedicure stations are at the spa? I thought I saw a picture of the spa having stone-type pedicure chairs, is this correct?

Have you ever had a pedicure while on board? Which place did you choose, and was it worth the money?

They told me at the Spa that the location is the same for both types - in the salon. The difference is the treatments and products used. And the price, lol.

Yep - same place! I've had both.

On the Dream they used hot stones & called it fire & ice...wonderful!!

On the Magic last month, the spa pedicure included leg & foot massage, exfoliation, oils... and the basic pedicure was more a foot soak & polish...lol


*A side note....they will use the new shellac product, if requested (lasts longer, gel product). On the Dream, it was NO additional charge & on the Magic, only one nail tech could do it & charged an additional $25!!

I assumed the Dream would be more money, not the Magic! Go figure!!!

Oooh, I had not heard of the new shellac product. Is it by Opi or Nicole, or someone else, do you know? I think another $25 is a bit pricey, however. I will have to check on the Wonder when I head to Alaska...

Sorry - can't remember the brand...but probably not OPI since I was chastised for using it on my existing polish...apparently it's hard to get off!
It is wonderful though & I did pay extra for both fingers & toes (no extra for "french" tho) & it lasted beautifully for the the whole 14 night ebta and into the Med! (Did start to grow out though...)!!

Is the salon cheaper?? I hope....

Same place for both. Longer service = more money!

I did this too when I was on the Magic. How do you get it off? I had to basically soak my toes in remover and scrape and chisel it off, which should tell you how strong it was (no chipping EVER). My toes look awful now.

My salon here soaks cotton balls in acetone, puts them on your nails then covers each nail with foil. You let that sit for 10-15 min then it should come right off. I've never used it on my toes as my toe polish never chips but I would assume the same way.

What do they do on the ship that is so much worth the price? Somewhere I read they do stuff that is not legal on shore, but everything I read seems similar to what I can get at any nail salon in town. I realize it is probably a super relaxing enviroment, ECT, but what I am missing? Do they do some magic ritual over my feet that I have never experienced?

I'm curious as well. I'm a nail tech myself, and I would love to have some sort of spa treatment but am wary of spending the money thinking "well, I could have done that myself!"

What spa treatments have people had that is really worth the money?



As for the Shellac - GREAT product! Two weeks of not worrying about your nails - yay! So many of my clients are addicted to this stuff... they come back every two weeks and can't get enough of it. It's definately worth the extra over using regular polish (plus it's dry as soon as it's on - no more wrecking your nails searching for your keys in your handbag)

Try to avoid the temptation of peeling it off as it's hard on your nails and will cause damage. This is a quick, easy procedure with no damage if you're doing it right

I loved the looks of the gel nails I had - BUT the salon's way of getting it off was to use the electric file they use for acrylics! Won't be having a gel manicure there ever again - that ruins your nails totally...

On the Magic, when they were removing the shellac (from when I was on the Dream a month before), they simply used a polish remover with acetone (like they all used to be) and it came right off. I wonder why anyone would file it off??

I have never had my polish chip after a pedi on board (guess I've been lucky), but when the nail tech was getting ready to polish (on the Dream), she just offered a choice of the 2 types of polish - glad I decided to try the shellac - it's wonderful.

Ugh, it's addicting... LOVE that my nails stay manicure looking for 2 weeks!!! Haven't seen it commercially, only in the salon... of course.

Anyone have an asnwer to my burning question? On some of the spa services the price seems worth it, but I can get a pedi down the street from my house for $25 that rocks my world, what do they do on this ship that is worth the price? Thanks!

I do the same thing a pp mentioned: soak cotton balls in nail polish remover, place to my nails, wrap each nail in foil (yep, from your kitchen cupboard), let it sit for 5 or so minutes, then use a wood cuticle pusher to help it off. You have to have everything ready before you start! I don't know if it helps that I am ambidexterous. It is a wee bit challenging doing my right hand, but once you get used to it, it's pretty easy! I prefer to remove it at home where I can use my computer while I'm waiting!!

You can buy the product at a beauty supply store, including the uv light. My girl puts the polish on very thick and I think there is definitely skill involved with doing it well (I had a Shellac manicure once that didn't even last 5 days).

I won't go back to regular manicures. I'm way too hard on my nails and Shellac holds up very well.

Good for you for doing the removals yourself in a safe way! Much better than just peeling it off and damaging your nail plate. If you use the soak-off method as you've described, your nail should be good as new once the Shellac is off.

It does sound like your nail tech is applying too thick - remind her of that next time you get it done if you think she's being too heavy handed. All the layers need to be superthin, or you will get cracks and chips. The application is definately a learned technique - you can't just throw it on like nail polish.

Yes, you can find Shellac for sale in various places, but it is meant to be a professional product for salon use only. You have to think about the places selling it, as they aren't supposed to be selling it to the public, and there are a lot of counterfeit bottles being marketed.

The lamp you need to cure it is quite expensive - you can't just use any UV lamp or you will get and incomplete cure, causing product failure and the potential for devloping allergies to the product. Believe me - I owned 4 UV lamps, and still had to buy the special CND lamp anyway. The product does not work well without it.

I've been yelled at about this before - a lot of people think it should be a DIY product and why shouldn't they try it at home? But there are safety issues involving chemicals and nail techs aren't generally out to rip you off.

A Shellac manicure isn't expensive for what it gives you - two weeks of colour that you don't have to worry about. What's not to like?
