So my mom wants to know if theres a pill out there that speeds up metalbisiom (sp) since shes trying loose weight. Anyone know if there is and what ones are best?

Careful with the heart, most appetite suppressants and metabolism enhancers are stimulants. I used some ages go and ended up with a heart monitor and palpitations. The biggest saboteur is sugar, it drops your blood sugar and leaves you ravenous so avoiding that will help. I happen to think caffeine is the best stuff out there, if you can do some sugar free soda or coffee that will do the trick.

Bad, bad, bad idea. Any diet pills you don't get from a doctor are BAD NEWS. Most of them contain ingredients that are basically like taking speed. They can be fatal to someone who reacts badly. They are considered dietary supplements and are largely unregulated.

Diet pills are not a good idea. In all my years of weight loss, I have had friends who insisted that the best way to suppress an appetite was to start smoking. Oh, that's so healthy! I also met someone who used to pop "uppers" to lose weight. Also a really bad idea.
I'm sorry--I think the combination of a balanced diet and regular exercise, while not fast, are your best, and safest, measures to lose weight.

Phen-phen works well, but is no longer FDA approved. My cousin purchases it in Mexico, while she's there visiting. Just so you know, it was deemed dangerous and not good for the heart, which is why it was pulled here in the U.S.

Ephedra used to work great until the government decided to protect us from ourselves... :sad2:

My mom was still buying that (ephedra) up until about a month ago. She was taking something called VasoPro for her sinuses. It contained ephedra and guafenesin. She actually had the okay of her doctor to use it. She wasn't taking it for weightloss, but for a the sinus problem. Not sure how I feel about her doctor right now, we have heart problems in our family. Just didn't seem like a good idea.

Exercising is the best way to increase metabolism and best of all it is free. There are way too may short and long risk with diet pills and they are only a temporary fix.

I was going to try Healthy Trim, and asked my dr. about it, and she advised me NOT to use it. It has something called hoodia in it that does speed up your metabolism, but it also speeds up your heart rate, can raise blood pressure, and some other bad stuff.

She did suggest that I could use Green Tea (the pill form), but to be sure to read the ingredients and not use the kind that has hoodia in it. Some of the Green Tea has hoodia in it, and some don't. The green tea is supposed to help suppress your appetite.

Isn't she concerned about what kind of negative effect(s) the phen-phen might have on her health?

She could have her thyroid checked if she hasn't already. Maybe she has a legitimate need to enhance her metabolism. It wouldnt be unusual.:)

There has been some buzz on the boards about HCG injections/drops.

The way to lose weight is a lifestyle change and not a pill. I don't trust any of the magic cures on the market, and that includes most of the fad diets.

You realize that ephedra is one metabolic process away from meth and is just as deadly right??? 19 year old girls dropping dead from heart attacks are what prompted the ban.

This stuff is not just not good for the heart, it causes mitrovalve damage, leading to valve replacement surgery, if you are lucky enough to catch the damage before it kills you.
Shes already on meds for her thyroid. I believe shes underactive, like most of our family.

DO NOT MIX DIET PILLS WITH THYROID MEDS!!!!!!! They WILL interact.

Unfortunately there is no pill. I'm sure if there was we'd all be skinny! I've heard of some people liking Alli but I'm afraid to use stuff like that because most of the time they're not FDA approved (like that makes any difference ) and they're chock full of chemicals that you have no idea what kind of effect it will have on your body (now or long term).

Honestly, health/weight loss is a day by day thing. Just have her make small changes. Maybe offer to go for a walk a couple of days a week, even for 15 minutes, and then increasing the time/distance/frequency of the walks. Make a meal/dessert she likes and make it a little healthier. So many people get discouraged when they give up everything and want and try so desperately to lose weight. It's not always easy but every step forward eventually leads you to a mile away from your former self. Good luck!

I think the thing that finally got it banned was all the publicity in 2003 of Steve Bechler's death during spring training.

What was making Ephedra even worse was that it was very common to take it as a "ECA stack" along with caffeine and aspirin. That is a heart attack waiting to happen. I know someone that used to take that stack and they were constantly bright red, sweating, and shaking. There is no way that garbage is a good idea.
