Didn't care for OKW - but, let me tell you why

My husband and I stayed at OKW in early November (sorry it took so long to post, too much going on this time of year). We purchased points from a DVC member. I was hesitant about this because it was the first time I had tried it, but all reservations were exactly as I had expected.

Now, we only stayed three nights, so I realize we did not get to experience everything the resort had to offer. That being said . . .

We arrived around 2:30 PM. (We had reserved a studio since it was just the two of us and only three nights. I do not recommend this. Even if there will be only two adults, go for the one bedroom. You'll be much happier. Even with the much lower rate, we did not feel the room was worth the money.) The CM who checked us in to the resort (Amy) was pleasant, if not overly friendly. No complaints here. She said there was a studio already available (two queen beds - nothing available with king) and we could get our room keys right away. Okay, that made me happy, I knew we were a little early. She told us that it was a handicapped-accessible room, but there would be both a tub and a shower. "Okay," said I, "as long as it will have both, because that's important." "Don't worry," said Amy.

Well, when we got to our room (which was located right beside a road with heavy traffic) we found that it definitely did not have a tub. Only a shower with a fold-down bench. Ugh! After a call to the front desk, I was informed that the room we were in was the ony room available. Yeah. In early November. When we scarcely saw another person at the resort most times we went out. Okay. Aggrevating, but not enough to ruin a vaction. We dealt. I decided to just get over the lack of bathtub and enjoy the vacation anyway.

Our first night's sleep brought another unpleasant surprise. The pillows on the beds are pratically nonexistant. The first night was so uncomfortable I got less than three hours sleep. The very next day we made an unscheduled trip to Wal-Mart in Kissimmee for a decent pillow. If you plan to stay here and like a firm pillow, bring one from home.

The room we were in seemed older and in need of some "sprucing up." There was some kind of permanent mildew in the tile grout in the bathroom and the sink did not drain properly. Wallpaper in various areas of the room was torn and peeling from the walls. Our television did not get very good reception and the color was a little off. It looked more like a black and white TV instead of color. We tried to find a way to correct it and couldn't. The carpet seemed pretty new, they may be in the process of replacing things one at a time. (??)

The room does come with a coffee pot, microwave oven and small refrigerator. These items all seemed to be relatively new and in working order. However, we had no need of them while we were there.

The towels and linens were okay. They did not seem old or worn.

There was a ceiling fan, but it only had one speed. Slow. Very slow. Too slow to feel any noticeable breeze. Which was too bad, since we both like the breeze and noise of a fan on high speed. Oh well.

The exterior of the resort was nice. The laid-back Key West-style theming was relaxing. Nice foliage. The pool area was very nice. Lots of chairs and chaise lounges. Even a sauna. Didn't get to try that, although I wanted to. There's a separate kiddie pool.

We ate dinner at the resort's only sit-down restaurant, Olivia's. The decor was very casual. The food was good. My husband ordered the "Surf and Turf" platter with bacon-wrapped shrimp and lobster (it was the day's special) and I got the NY Strip. He loved his. I thought mine was good but not great. I would love to find a restaurant that could consistently cook a steak MEDIUM. Not medium rare, not medium well. LOL! My steak was barely pink in the middle, but tasted good. Also, my veggies were too salty. The service started out badly, but improved as the meal progressed. We thought the server may have just started his shift and took a little while to warm up. They have sweet iced tea. That's a really good thing. There aren't many WDW restarants that do, and that scores rather high with me. Not only is it sweet tea, it's "southern sweet" tea, which anyone who lives or has lived in the South can tell you means you can almost stand your spoon up in it. Okay, maybe I exaggerate, but just a little. All-in-all the meal at Olivia's was good enough to say we would probably eat there again given the opportunity.

The transportation was not bad. It was only an issue one day. Our last day at OKW we decided to take advantage of EMH at MGM Studios. The early bus never showed up. We waited at the bus stop for 35 minutes. Luckily ours was the first stop, because, by the time the bus finally got there and picked up everyone waiting for MGM, it was packed as tight as any bus I've ever seen leaving EPCOT after the fireworks!

Checking out of the resort was quick and painless. And we spent our next three days at the Animal Kingdom Lodge and enjoyed it so much more. But that's better left to another post . . .

Thanks so much for your honest OKW review. I have always gone back and forth with whether or not to try it so I like reading the good AND the bad. Oh, also, one of the great things about moving to NC is the sweeeeeeeet tea as they call it here!

Whenever you have a problem at OKW (or any DVC) whether it's the color being off on the TV or the pillows being too hard or soft, give a call and it should be taken care of for you promptly. The speed on the fan should have been adjustable by pulling the chain....something maintenance could do for you. I haven't stayed in a handicap unit but I also think I would be disappointed in the set-up.

FYI -- All the studios have 2 queen beds since they also serve as the second bedroom of the 2 bedroom lock-off units. The king beds are only in the master bedrooms of the 1 bedroom and larger units.

I was going to post that the studios are all arranged with 2 twin beds, but Pam beat me to it. From what I understand about the handicapped accessible rooms, they do have some that have a regular tub/shower combination with grab bars and some that have only the roll in shower. it's too bad the CM seemed to think your was the kind with a tub.
We always call Housekeeping to get extra pillows, so for anyone who doesn't like the pillows, that is an option. I'm curious where the wallpaper was. We stay in a 2 bedroom unit, but I've nver noticed any wallpaper or wallpaper borders in the rooms at all. Just paint. It could be that the dedicated studios are different. You are right about the one bedroom. It's a lot bigger and more "home-like". It would give you a king bed and even if it is a wheelchair accessible room with a roll in shower, it also has a whirlpool tub.

We were at OKW in early Nov. on rented points too. I'm sorry to hear you did not have a great experience and you had to have the roll-in shower.

We had a similiar experience last year at the WL. We had reserved a King but at check-in they only had the roll-in shower available. Our DD was only 14 months at the time and we had to have a tub for her. So we went with a two queens room and felt very crowded. There just wasn't much room to walk around. I usually always bring my own pillow from home, but had forgotten it. Ugh!! I can't stand hotel pillows and never had a great nights sleep. I will never ever forget my pillow anymore!

Now fast-forward to this year at OKW in a one-bedroom and my own pillow - heaven!!!!!!!! Our room was in good condition, our ceiling fans were adjustable and all appliances in good working order. You may have a different opinion of OKW in a one-bedroom unit, so don't write it off completly yet! :D

well I think Pam and Sue basically said everything that I thought during reading your post. If there is anything wrong just call the front desk they will send you ten pillows if you want or have engineering come up and fix the tv or bring a whole new one. And Sue you are right I don;t remember ever seeing wallpaper.

And don't worry, we haven't completely written off OKW - just the studios. BTW, our ceiling fan did not have a pull chain. Maybe it was broken? The peeling wallpaper was in the bathroom and by the front door from what I remember. The wallpaper in the bathroom looked like it was applied very haphazardly and didn't stop where the tile started. Instead, the edge of it folded down about a quarter of an inch over the top of the tile and was ripped and frayed in places. Also, after calling the front desk about the room (roll-in shower) the first time with absolutely NO help, we figured what's the point about everything else. They said no other rooms were available for us. Made it seem like we were stuck with the one we had. We tried doubling up on the pillows, but that didn't work very well. Eventually, I folded one of the bathroom towels and placed it inside the pillowcase. That helped me sleep a few hours on the first night. After that, the new pillow was a dream! Oh! And I think we were in Building #53. (?)

We stayed at OKW in early Nov. on rented pts. also. We liked it so much we just bought a resale. We stayed in a 2BR.

I must say that I did see a few things in the bathroom that could use improving, but I never got around to calling the front desk. Because we were on rented pts. I wasn't sure if I should or not.

I certainly will now that we will be "owners". LOL

You may want to keep in mind too that while going from a studio to a 1bdrm or larger unit is the difference between night and day, if you had gotten a different studio (better location, not handicapped) it may have made all the difference in the world too.

So sorry to hear that you had a bad experience though, hope you have better luck next time.

Sorry you had a bad experience but it at least you didn't let it ruin your trip which is the most important thing. Maybe next time it will be different for you.

Glad to hear you liked Animal Kingdom. We're thinking about staying there next trip!

We stayed in an okw studio for one night a couple years ago and were not at all impressed and pretty much dismissed staying there again. flash foward: stayed in a okw 1 bedroom last week- soooo awesome...Iwant to go back....heck, I want to live there!!!Give okw another chance in a 1-bedroom-trust me;)

Am I going to be totally mad that I have a studio for next month!! Everyone has me really wondering. We are going on rented points also and it was such a good deal I did not want to pass it up!! PLease someone give me some hope!!

Aring75, it sounds like you still had a nice vacation. I'm sorry OKW disappointed you. If you choose to stay there again, I hope you have better accommodations.

DisneyDianne, I have had handicapped accessible studio rooms at OKW and the BWV. They were fine. I actually found them roomier than the regular studio rooms.

I just wanted to say that we are DVC'ers & last year we stayed at OKW... our friends came to visit for one night & we got them a studio for their visit. It also was a handicap unit... I did NOT like the setup at all.... it was more than the roll in shower, it was set up with a lot less shelf room & I thought it just wasn't as nice as the regular units (keep in mind I get a handicap 1 bedroom for myself...) Anyways, I know those units & I'd be disappointed as well if I got one... Also, we once stayed in building 55 (or was it 53?), I thought the location was less than stellar... buildings over by 34 are much better if that helps!!

For anyone contemplating a stay, just ask for a non-handicap unit, preferably a non-end unit on the golf course... you should get a nice unit...

As for any trouble you have at ANY of the Disney resorts (including DVC Resorts), just call housekeeping or engineering to resolve the problem... we once had an entire TV replaced LOL.... if that's what they have to do, so be it!!!

At this point I wouldn't rule out even trying a regular studio in the future, they really are nice...
