Hi all,

We own at AKL and BLT.

We have a reservation for (dates) for a (room type) at (resort). I forgot to cancel it, so we are now in the 30-day holding thing. Basically, now we can only use these points for a stay that we book 60 days in advance. Even though we only go during the slower seasons, I am really worried about availability at 60 days out.

What is my next move? Be at the mercy of the system and hope that something will be open when I book at 60 days? Should I try renting the points out? I've never done this... Also, would it work if I just forfeit the points and cancel the (1st) night, which would put me at 31 days out for the rest of the stay and then can I just bank the remaining points since we'd be at the 31 day mark???

Ugh.

PLEASE HELP if you can!! I need advice! I totally screwed this all up, and we might be in a situation where we forfeit all points. We really weren't planning on going down until late Sept at the earliest!

Thank you in advance, and sorry for the lenthly post.

I apologize if this is not the right forum for this type of post. If its wrong, please let me know and I will move it to the right place right away.

I would definitely cancel and put them into holding

Then rent them out. You really shouldn't have trouble renting them out - I see people all the time looking for last minute reservations - with the slow time coming up in Jan/Feb - I would think you would have pretty good luck!

when is your UY?

there is plenty of demand for early december so i'd wait a week or so before cancelling.

Thank you Chalee for your help. My use year is September. You suggested waiting a week or so to cancel. Should I try to rent them out during the next week then for the existing reservation?

Thank you too for replying. When I am trying to rent them out, would i just advertise that they are available, then wait for people to tell me what they want and when they want it, then call DVC and make the reservation?

I am so thankful for the help here on DISboards! :flower3:

You may submit a Reservation for Rent post to the Rent/Trade Board at the 30 day mark. Before doing so, please read the sticky threads on that board for the posting rules governing Reservation for Rent posting rules.

Or, you can cancel the reservation and offer the points as a Points for Rent thread and try to book the dates and room type people are looking for. Personally, for that timeframe, I'd try to rent that reservation as a Reservation for Rent, and then if unable to do so, cancel it about a week before scheduled arrival and then post them as a Points for Rent thread.

We're thinking of taking a cruise the end of Febuary, and if we do, we would combine that with a stay March 4-7, 2010. What would my chances be of getting something at 60 days out? We'd need at least a 1 bedroom since we have four children, ages 8, 5, 2, and 7 months at time of travel.

Would it be worth it to cancel and then hope we can get something? I could book the March trip the beginning of January.

Thanks again!

i'm relieved that you are traveling early in your use year. that gives you some options.

i agree with chuck.

there's no difference in cancelling 29 days out and cancelling 7 days out. december is a high-demand period...i'd offer to rent it as-is. (make sure the renter knows that the deal is final and nonrefundable, also). if you can't get a good price for the reservation, then cancel a week or so before.

IIRC, early march is prior to the spring break rush and you should be able to find something...but given the high demand for december reservations, i'd give renting a shot first. if you don't get your price, then go to plan B.

I just recently called to make a reservation for the end of January and there was availability at several resorts for 1Br and 2Br, so you may be able to get a 60 day reservation for then if that works.

For the fist week of March and 2 of the days being the much more available weekend nights, if you are not “picky as to resort and with a 3 or 4 night stay I would not sweat getting a 1 or 2br villa. I bet if you check on availability now almost everything is available. Whether you rent your points or cancel you are going to make someone happy who is waiting for those dates.
