Also, do you know people who still buy them?

I didn't have a "traditional" hope chest.. It was a very large, very heavy, antique, round-top steamer trunk (used to belong to my grandparents) - that my mother re-lined the inside of.. Just opening the top was a chore - it was so gosh darn heavy.. LOL..

If you still have one, will you pass it on down to a DD or purchase a new one for her? (Come to think of it, who is supposed to purchase it?)

I know Amish girls all have them - usually crafted by someone in their own family or at least someone within the Amish community..:santa:

While my mother has purchased several things for my future married life, they are not in a hope chest. Unless you'd consider our garage my hope chest. ;)

No, I don't know anyone who has a traditional hope chest. I'm sure most people I know would have no idea what a hope chest even is.

ETA: Whew. How many times can you say "hope chest" in one post? Hope chest, hope chest, hope chest...

No. I still don't see the reason for them. Don't most people now just buy what they need?

I can see when they used to handmake everything that it took time to accumulate linens to equip a household, but now?

I do have a piece of furniture that could probably be used as one, I even have some of my kid's old baby stuff in it that could feasibly be worn by grandchildren etc. but I don't in any way consider it a hope chest.

I have one made by the amish. My aunt and uncle bought it for me when I was a senior in high school. I left it with my dad when I joined the air force so now parts are broke:sad1:I would love it to be fixed to pass it along to my dd. I store pictures in it now.

I have one. My husband made it for me before we were married. Honestly, I'm not sure if my daughter even wants it.

I have one but it more like a cedar blanket box. It is huge , we bought it from the amish at a framers maket I think before we were married. We were engaged for 2 years.

Now I store wedding presents that never made it out of boxes, my old candy stripper jacket, a poncho my parents bring back from Mexico when I was little and other momentos. I think my first wedding dress is even in there. I told you this thing is huge.

I have a beautiful hope chest. My grandfather made it for me when I was a little girl. He made all of his granddaughters one be he died. All of use still have them. I store all kinds of momentos in it. If DD wants it, she can have it when she grows up.

I have a Lane one -lined with cedar
If DD wants it -she can have it -but it sooo doesn't look like her.

When I was a little girl -my Christmas presents from my grandmother were things for my hope chest.
I HATED it then (what 8 y.o. wants a relish dish for Christmas?)
But now I love using those things.

I was supposed to get the one my Grandmother had. But I wanted to store "stuff" in, not the traditional use for a hope chest.

However, my Uncle - who somehow had possession of it - has disappeared off the face of the Earth. Really we can't find him at all.

I have a gorgeous Mahogany hope chest lined with Cedar. My dad made it as part of his vacational training to become a master cabinet maker. It sat in my grandmother's house for years and years and years. She also defaced it terribly once by having it painted black with gold trim. When she passed away, I asked if I could have it, having no idea it was the one my dad made. He said yet, and took it to 'repair' one of the legs. He also had it stripped, and refinished. It's really one of my most prized possessions, it's so special to me.

i have one. the lane company gave all of the senior girls a small cedar dresser top size chest before graduation. my parents bought a large one when i graduated. it's cedar lined and has quilts from my grandmother, special keepsakes, etc. my daughter is not interested in it. it sits at the end of our bed.

I have a Lane Cedar chest.....still keep a couple quilts and pillowcases in it.
DH made DD one when she was small, as a toy box. It is beautiful. She uses it for storage, but for a "hope" chest.
She will most likely get mine too, if she wants it, if not, it will go to DS.

I have the one that belonged to my grandmother. It was one of the few things I asked for when my grandparents died. I store photo albums in it now.

I have a Lane cedar hope chest. DH bought it for me when we were engaged. Everything that's special to me is in there......wedding and baby stuff, pictures, afgan my Grandma crocheted, old yearbooks, veteran's flag from when DH's father died, papers I wrote in college.....tons of stuff. It's almost like my own little time capsule.

I don't think either of my sons would be interested in having it but I would like to pass it down to a grand-daughter if I ever have one.

I have one, its in storage right now but I was just thinking the other day that its time to get it out for dd.

I actually did use it for a "hope" chest. Every so often, throughout my teen years, my mom would pick up household items that were on sale. When I got married the first time, I had towel sets, sheet sets, tablecloths for every season, cloth napkins, just all kinds of great linens and such. She knew the types of things that I would like and so everything was something that I would use.

My great-grandpa made me a cedar hope chest when I was a baby. My mom didn't put traditional hope chest things in there though, instead she kept my favorite baby blankets and my holiday dresses/outfits from when I was a baby, and some of my baby shoes. I love going through it to look at everything. :goodvibes
