Did you know you can have swine flu with NO fever?

Do you really believe that? They are just saying that without testing people.

And frankly since they cannot accurately test for H1N1, they really don't know wth is up anyway.

Uh Oh! I just returned from the doctor's office with DD. She is having symptoms but no fever so the doctor did not do the test. See my post on page 3 of the "swine flu has hit our house" thread. Then I posted the update after the apppointment on page 4.

Yes, I did know that and mentioned it today during an H1N1 presentation to staff. Seven percent of H1N1 infections do not cause fever, which is another factor that distinguishes H1N1 from seasonal flu.

I keep hearing this. DH & I both had something about a month ago. Starting to wonder if that's what it was, but I'm still leaning towards it being colds. Really bad colds with much different symptoms than we usually get.

We both did start with sore throats.

Who are they testing to get these facts?

They make this statement in the above article. So, they really don't know.

Don't forget the beginning of the article -- "In Chile, he adds, about half of those with confirmed H1N1 had no fever; many just had a headache and runny nose." My family all have bad colds right now, makes me wonder ...

Well I had a rip roaring cold a few weeks ago with no fever. Maybe it was H1N1, but I got over it with rest, fluids, the usual cold treatment. World keeps on spinnin'...

My peds office will not test with no fever present, since they say that it is IMPOSSIBLE to have swine flu without a fever. I have read 30% of confirmed cases have no fever. If fever is present with other symptoms, they do the in- office influenza A test and send it on for further testing if it is positive. Not the rapid H1N1 test.

Some people are being tested out there. Just not nearly as many as would be necessary to have an accurate idea of total case and death counts.

Is there anyway we can put in a request for the no-fever version? That's the one I want if I get it. I *hate* having a fever (well, doesn't everyone).

My coworker got REALLY sick when she was on vacation. She lost her voice, had a sore throat, had all sorts of sinus stuff and then three days into it, she developed an awful cough. She did go to the doctor but he didn't even test her (she had no fever). She did come in on day 5 of her illness. Yesterday, another coworker started with cold symptoms (no fever) and she took off today. Hard to know if it's just regular illness or H1N1.

I was tested today for Type A flu and the test was positive.

With no fever. I don't feel very well, but I was much more sick last year when I had strep.

Interesting. I have to ask, since you didn't have a fever, what made you even go to the doctor? Were your other symptoms really severe? I just don't even set foot in a doctor unless I have a fever.

That is a good question! My DH just happened to have an appointment yesterday for a well check and about an hour before he got there he started feeling sick, as if he had been hit by a ton of bricks. (No fever.) They did a flu test which was positive.

I started having the same symptoms last night myself, and so I decided to get checked out. I wanted to get tamiflu early to possibly avoid a more severe case.

So I wonder if you would have eventually developed a fever had you not gotten the Tamiflu so soon? The one time I had the flu, it hit me suddenly as you described but the fever didn't come for another 24 hours or so.

I've heard that in my area they aren't giving Tamiflu unless you have asthma. I guess every place is different.

Well, my doctor did say that most people she has seen have pretty mild cases, and about 1/2 don't get a fever at all, or a very slight one (under 100.) They gave me tamiflu because I have a two year old with athsma, and my DH has athsma too.

My dd had H1N1 in June. She did have a fever. I was sick a few days before her with no fever(I never took my temp though) I had the headache, sore throat, cough, stomach issues, fatigue. I'm sure I had it also b/c I was with her best friends mom 2 days before I got sick and she came down with the flu at the same time as I did. She was tested b/c she worK in a Drs office.
