Did the space shuttle kill society's dream of going into space?

One of the most incredible, awe-inspiring things I've ever seen is the Saturn V rocket hanging from the ceiling at Kennedy Space Center. I am still blown away by what scientists and engineers were able to accomplish, especially when you consider the limits of technology at the time. I grew up on the space program. We used to watch all the televised launches in school, and I clearly remember where I was when Neil Armstrong took that "one small step." DH and my FIL are both physics-guys and are fascinated by the mysteries of space. DD went to Space Camp at KSC when she was 10. One of our very best friends is a now-retired rocket scientist from KSC, who lives in Cocoa Beach and is still an avid space fan, watching the launches and landings that are now happening. WE are definitely a space family, inspired by the abilities and dedication it took to get the USA into space, fascinated by all that we are still learning (Hubble was awesome, and the Mars rover? We saw pictures from another planet! INCREDIBLE!!)

I love everything about this except...

Hubble IS awesome. not was. 30+ years and still going strong. Expected to continue exploring the universe for a decade or more to come.

Apple TV's "For All Mankind"! Woah this show is wild!

Reminds me of the X2 Shuttle from "Mission Space"!

My new headcanon is that Mission Space took place in a world where the space race had continued.

I can't stand soap opera but it's use of period music is excellent and some of the characters are likeable.

True. Hubble IS awesome. Above I was just remembering those first pictures! However, part of the "awesomeness" is the back-story, how even though unanticipated errors arose, NASA's scientists and engineers were able to work it out, make the repairs, and give us the space explorer they'd hoped for- and more! (Disclaimer- I am sitting in a 'Cape Canaveral' hotel right now, here for today's airshow- just wish we had time to get to KSC.)
