Well, my DH and I came home last night from our quick five day trip to the World with our kids. On Saturday we did the DVC tour. I've done TONS of research so it was more general info and to check out the rooms. My DH says it makes no sense to go back to the World again without doing the timeshare. I agree, for some reason I just can't make the jump. Basically we'd need somewhere around 250-ish points. We LOVED Bay Lake. I thought I'd need to talk DH into but when he saw the rooms the was sold. I'm trying to decide in my head if I should go with half and try to figure a trip every two years? I think in my mind I feel like 250 is too much! DH on the other hand says rent them if it's too much or one year we can't go.

Someone give me some insight!!!! :)

We are SSR owners. We had looked at many timeshares before making the leap to DVC and eventually purchasing. Originally we purchased 160 about 5 years ago. Since that time we have added on to our points twice. The last time being last year when there was a fantastic promotion going on where depending on the amount of points you purchase you got a free Disney Cruise, which we are actually going on in November.

You could do less but you may end up adding points anyhow.:lmao:

I bought 160 at AKV last year and just another 100 at BLT when we went down 2 weeks ago. You never know when you may want to take an impromptu trip at the last minute or like hubby said rent points out.

DVc will break it up into more than one contract--but once you buy, it can't be split up. It is MUCH easier to sell a smaller contract, if you ever decided 250 was too much--which does happen, economy, kids in school/sports, less vacations at WDW, etc. So, if you decide on 250, I would ask for a 150 and a 100 point contract. There is no difference to you in cost, booking, etc. you get the same usage year.

The man we talked to suggested the two contracts for passing it down to our kids which I thought was a great idea.

Here's my other question. Say for example I buy 160 at BLT. And in two years decided to add on and it's not at BLT...how does that affect getting reservations at BLT. Meaning if I have priority for 160 of my points but not my extra 100 how does that work???

DGF and me just purchased 120 pts, with her DS, DD and DD on the way. We were given 09 points as part of the deal for BLT and only plan on 1 BR ever other year in Late fall early winter at BLT. I would play around with the different calculators that are availabe and find what fits best in your situation. Oh btw Welcome Home

Well that is where we are at. We originally purchased 300 points at SSR in Jan. 07. Then in Sept. of 08 we added on 100 points at AKV with a great promotion. HOWEVER....we always BOOK a 2 bedroom (at least for now we do) so the only way to stay at AKV for say a week would be to either bank/borrow those 100 points and stay there every other year or we book x amt of days at SSR and x amt. of days at AKV at the 11 month windows then try and switch all the days to AKV at the 7 month window. We did a split stay at BCV and AKV in 09. I know a lot of people on this board have multiple contracts at different resorts...you might want to post another thread about this. They might be able to explain it better. If I had to do it all over again..I would have just added on at SSR to keep all of my points at one resort. We have been lucky in that we have stayed BWV, OKW, BCV and Vero using the 7 month window with no problems.

Keep it simple.
11 month booking at each home resort for the amount of points there.
At 7 months, can use all points together at any resort.

Here are your options:
Bank and borrow for enough points at each resort.
OR
Book a split stay at the 11 month window, a few days at each resort.
OR
Do the above and at 7 month window see if there is availability at one or the other for the complete stay at one resort!

We bought 230 Boardwalk points eleven years ago and it was the best decision we ever made. We added on an additional 100 Vero Beach points a year later. We take two trips a year and have frequently taken other families with us and gotten a larger room. If you go with the 250 - I am sure you will find yourself using them and wishing for more. Good luck!

You should be aware that there is a very active resale marketplace, which should save you a substantial amount of money if you can find a contract the size you want.

I believe DVC's direct price promotion now is $110 per point for 200 points or more at BLT. From looking at the Timeshare Store resale listings at the top of this page, it looks like around $100 per point is the average asking price for BLT resales, and I believe most contracts are selling in the low $90s. So you would save $15-$20 per point.

If you saved $18, that would be a savings of about $4,500 from what you would pay direct. You would have to pay some closing costs buying resale, but even so, you'd probably save $4,000 or more.

Or, to look at it another way, you could probably spend the same amount of money but get 300 points purchasing resale.

I bought 150 points at SSR in '05, mainly because that is what I could afford at the time. Those points did me well until this year, when I found myself wanting to go more than once a year, so I added on 2 50 point contracts, also at SSR. Having all of my points at the same resort makes my life easier for making reservations and keeping track of my points. I say go with your gut. Use your points for a year or two and see how well they cover your vacation needs. If you find yourself borrowing each year to cover those vacations, you can add on then.

Whatever you decide, WELCOME HOME!!

I started low, and have sucessfully transferred in points from the rent trade board at 9$ a point. Pretty close to actual cost with no need to pay MF forever on. I personally would rather buy less. I can always buy more, and I can always tranfer in (once a year), and if I cannot go as often later no biggy. I also started with a loaded contract adding in about 2 extra years of points.

I like options of FD, or AP discount when no rooms are available. As sometimes we plan 2-4 months out, and points are often useless then. If you decide to buy more, for sure buy 2-3 contracts. They are easier to sell.

This has been my strategy over the years as well. :thumbsup2

I was just looking over the books they gave me...you can use points at other hotels in Disney, i.e. The Polynesian? How do you figure out points for those?? I never knew that!!

I like the idea of buying less too, my DH on the other hand doesn't for some reason. I think he's too enchanted right now to see the overall picture! :lmao:

I would rather start out small and add if I need or like you said rent extras and not have the maintenance on them....

Ok I am going to sound like a dumb dumb here lol We have not bought yet as we find this all very confusing however we do visit wdw every year at least once, so it makes sense I think for us to buy down the road.

I am confused a bit. Did you start with a certain amount of points in the beginning? If so how many? Then did you add points from the resale area? When you do this is it to the same resort and you just pay them outright? See I really am confused lol sorry for making you really dumb it down for me but I really am trying desperately to understand this before leaping into it.

:) The PP did a transfer of points from another member, he did not add on. So I own 210 at AKV, then I get you to transfer me (can do once a year) another 100 points so I can stay in a larger villa. I do not have to pay the MFs on the transferred points only the MFs on my points becasue those are the ones I own. You can stay at the Poly but it is expensive "point wise" as are cruises and ABD trips. The best use of points is staying at a DVC resort. There is a $95 fee to stay outside of a DVC resort, too.

I would buy the 250 in smaller contracts. I would do 150, 50, 50 probably.
