Did I ever share my first major retouching project?

This is the grandfather-in-law of an employee. They only had a 1" x .5" pic with ball point writing on the back that showed through to the front.

I have been using Photoshop for about 5 years but would consider my talents entry level. But this is the almost finished version that can be printed 8x10 at least...

Very nice! I have some old photos of my parents I would like to try this with. I have actually have tried it a little- but got frustrated and trashed them as not worth saving.

What resolution scan do you start with for something like this?

Very nice! How many hours did this take you? Are you considering doing a final version in sepia also? I need to do the same thing with about 30 photos from greatgrandparents and have put it off until I get Photoshop proper. You have given me inspiration for the future!

Great Job!!

Another Photoshop amatuer here. The program is SOOO powerful that at times I'm pulling my hair out. Other times it's a breeze to work, just depending on your project.

All of my parent's pictures are in slide form. I don't know - that's what they always took. So we have countless thousands of slides that we'd sit down for an evening and watch through. It was a family fun event for us.

They've started scanning them and putting them online. So there was one picture after their engagement that they had that was out of focus. It was the best picture they have and I always remember them explaining they were sad it was out of focus and wished it were a better picture. So a little work with Focus Magic and we have:

sweet!

jfulcer - That picture of your parents is so nice! Now your whole family can share them!

I remember being in peoples' homes with curtains like those (dates me I guess) and your slides are much better than some of my Dad's 1000s of slides of airfields in Korea! When he died we just tossed those and saved the family slides. Some day I will scan them in too!

Again, great work!

Hi All,
Sorry I did not reply sooner but its been a busy few nights here.

Thanks,
it was a low budget all in one office scanner printer fax. the file says 3808x3584 so if the pic is 1.5 inches by 1 inch that is about 3700 dpi. Is that right? Maybe it was 1.5 x 2 inches. I also do not know if that was optical or interpolated/enhanced?
I know how you feel about trashing work. I started some others and did not get more than ten minutes into it before giving up because it looked so bad,

Thanks 0bli0!

HI klmall,
I hate to mention it if it will discourage you, but since I was learning I probably spent 4 hours..... It was worth it. I went to the wedding and everyone from the family thanked me. It is the only pic of their grandad.

I have the same problem. I need a book that tells me when to use what tool. Not what each tool does....

Thanks for the comments,

Jfulcer, Epson has a great feature on their photo scanners called color restoration. It would get rid of that magenta cast and the photo would look like you took it yesterday.

I have done hundred's of photos and I am thrilled with the outcome using the color restoration feature.
