...because I did not. When did this happen? Shouldn't this have been breaking news?

My DH bought a NG magazine and he and DS were looking at a picture of the solar system. I mentioned Pluto somehow and they both said that it was no longer considered a planet. WHAT? How can this be? I mean I know how...they explained it but....my son is 9 and he knows more than me :upsidedow .

Did everyone know this? .....or is it just me....

A couple of months ago they made the announcement that Pluto was too small to be considered a planet. I thought they found another one, though?

:teeth: I think it was just you. I saw this on the news for several days and in the newspaper.

I guess I need to turn the disney channel off and reach for more than the Target ad in the paper! ;)

Now I am embarassed. My sister and bil were visiting during the... incident. I just know they are going to get me something planet related for christmas.

:rotfl2: No need to be embarassed! Sometimes if you miss just a couple of days of the news, you miss a lot!

Yes, it happened a bit ago but I'm hard headed and it will probably always be considered a planet by me. Then again, I'm REALLY old school and was perplexed when my DD was talking about other planets having rings besides Saturn. We were always taught Saturn was the one with rings because no other planet had them.

Oh well...between that and changing dinosaur names on me, I feel like I should just consider the world flat and leave it at that. :lmao:

Edited to add: A bit off topic but I *just* found out flotsam & jetsam are real words! I had no idea...I thought Disney just made them up. So, I wonder how many people knew they meant things either accidently falling off ships (flotsam) or intentionally thrown off (jetsam) and I was completely clueless until I was reading ASK magazine that I got for my 9 year old. I'm pretty sure I graduated from High School & even have a 2 year college degree but I'm not 100% sure I shouldn't go back to grade school lately. :lmao:

Yeah, I guess they found another one or two "planets" that were part of the Kemper Belt (I think that's another asteroid belt out beyone Pluto). At least one of the other "planets" was bigger than Pluto. So, whoever it is that governs such things had to decide if the new bodies were planets or just large asteroids. And if the new bodies were asteroids, then why was Pluto a planet and not another asteroid in the Kemper Belt? So, rather than add more planets, Pluto was downgraded. At least that's my understanding....

What?? Saturn is NOT the ONLY planet with rings? Man...what is going on! ;)

Yeah I didn't agree with this decision, once we get used to a certain rock being considered a planet, just doesn't seem right to denegrate it. Seems like discrimination to larger rocks and gaseous formations to me. All the larger bodies get all the publicity, (Saturn/Jupiter) the next thing you know they'll be picking on poor little Mercury.

Pluto will always hold a special place as a planet in my heart!

Me too! I mean think of all the tests we took on planets. Think of all of the old models of the solar systems parents have kept. They are all wrong now. So many textbooks need to be rewritten. It is sad.

I will never forget you Pluto. Never. :sad1:

P.S. The earth is ROUND. True fact!

So they TELL us for right now but I'm just waiting for them to change thier mind on that too. :rotfl: :rotfl: :lmao: :lmao: I DID learn it was round but seems everything I learned about planets was incorrect so I'm not so sure anymore. ;) ;)

Yes it was all over the news a while ago. I feel bad for poor pluto!
