Diamond Rings - How big is too big?

I don't like those big rings either. I think they look like little girls wearing plastic baubles from Woolworth's (showing my age, I know).

As for me, I have spent most of my life being too poor and too practical so that, even if we won the lottery tomorrow, I'd still be thinking of what more important things we could buy or how much food the food pantry could buy for the hungry with that money. Or how horrible I would feel if I lost it. I don't care what others do, that's just for me.

I don't like gaunty rings. When I get engaged I want a small diamond. But then again Eva has a hubby that makes millions so figures. If my fiance made that much and got me a huge ring I wouldn't tell him return it. LOL.

It all depends on the person. My mom never had a engagement ring she had a wedding band, but since it was made out of some mystery metal they had to cut it off her finger. My dad had told her he would get her a real ring someday. On their 25th wedding anniversary he got her a big old 8 carat diamond ring. He also got her for their 50th anniversary a 5 carat three stone ring. Most people that remark about her jewelry say wow your jewelry is gorgeous. She occasionally gets someone that says thats a big CZ and she just smiles and Say's "Yep you're right it is big isn't it" I personally have a 1/2 carat engagement ring and quite happy with it.:)

I think 1 and 1/2 carats is perfect. Mine is 96 points, and I love it. But my nephew got his wife a 1 and 1/2 carat ring, and it is beautiful!

Mine is 1 1/2 Princess cut with Baguettes on either side...I also wear it with a very plain wedding band. This drives DH crazy...he wanted me to have a diamond band...nope, I like it just the way it is.

Now 1 1/2 is large by some standards but I am a large woman with large hands, so I think it looks about right. It's the ONLY bling I wear because all my other jewelery is from the WDW silver collection of MICKEY...Love them too.;)

When I see a celeb with a huge diamond, I always think that the ones with the Biggest Diamonds seem to get divorced the fastest for some reason...Look at Benifer! They never even made it down the isle.

THe bigger the better. :rotfl: WHen we got engaged almost 30 years ago, DH tried to get me to settle for a little diamond ;) I wanted a BIG diamond :) and we got a 1/3 carat round. I really wanted a marquise but they didn't have any that I liked at that time.

A couple of years ago, he bought me a three stone diamond ring. It has a 1/2 and two 1/4. It's the only one I wear now.

I'd love a 2 or 3 carat :cool1: but will never get one....

I guess if Eva's hubby didn't spend the money on the ring, he'd have to give it to the government so why not right? It just looked gigantic on her tiny finger.

I have a 1.5 carat in a plain gold band with a lovely wedding ring (which I never take off). I think it's a perfect size. My mother on the other hand holds the same sentiment as Dawn. The bigger the better. :)

I think anything over 2 carats is too big. I have a 1/2 carat engagement ring and I wouldn't trade it up for anything. First, I'd be afraid it would hurt my husband's feelings, and also, I love it the way it is.

I got engaged at 19, DH was 20, and he bought me a .55 carat pear shaped solitare. I remember staring at it for what seemed like hours thinking how huge and beautiful it was.

I would really like a three stone ring for my right hand, but DH is not convinced.

It depends on the size of the woman's hand. I have large hands and long fingers, so a larger stone looks more proportionate on me than a smaller stone.

I agree w/the proportionate comments. My ring is only a sz. 4 1/2 and the engagement ring is 1 carat... I think it is perfect:cloud9: he says he wants to buy me one that is bigger, but NO WAY! If you want something bigger, buy another ring, I'm not trading this one!! Too sentimental:rolleyes1

"To big" and "diamonds" should never be in the same sentence LOL.

My diamond from DH was a .33. The 1st chance I we got we traded it in for a bigger one. I now have a 1ct center stone with 1ct total in smaller stones in a matching band.

I will and cant wait to upgrade to a 2 ct center stone, then it will stop (I hope LOL)

My sister has the biggest diamond I have ever seen in real life. I think its like 8ct and she had it made into a beautiful bracelet because it was just way to big on her finger. She jokes around and calls it her "ball and chain" LOL.

I use to work for a jeweler who designed and did repairs for jewelry stores. One time he made a ring for a store owner's wife and the stone was an almost 11 carat completley flawless emerald cut diamond. It was BEAUTIFUL! Anway, it was my day to deliver to that store and I didn't want to deliver it! I was too scared to drive all the way there with it in a locked bag in a locked car! So the jeweler called the store owner and he and his wife came and picked it up. She just walked in, put it on her finger and walked out! And I didn't want to take it in a locked bag!

Dh did get me a new ring for our 10th anniversary and the center stone is over 3 carats. It is set pretty low and that does make a difference. Some settings are really high, mine is not. I wear it all the time, I only take it off to make meatballs and to clean it!:goodvibes

I have freakishly small fingers(3.5 to a 4)... I love my 1/2 ct.. I couldn't see anything bigger on my fingers.. it would look REALLY odd! I am thinking of getting a new semi mount next year. Right now my band is plain.

Me too- freakishly small fingers and engagement diamond size (which is now reset into wedding band). The anniversary ring he just got for me has a 1ct sapphire with .25ct diamonds on either side. I can't imagine going bigger than that without it looking weird. I love both though!
