THree weeks ago I was sick--had a slight fever, sore throat and was exhausted... THis lasted about two days and it went away on its own... Ever since then, at night I get a crazy cough/tickle in my throat that I can't seem to shake- but only when I go to bed . During the day, I'm absolutely fine---no cough---no congestion. THis happens when I go to sleep at night. Could it be allergies? I've never had them before so I have no idea what the heck this is but its driving me bonkers... Eventully, I chug some Delsum so that the coughing will stop so I can get rest...but I HATE medicating myself so that I can sleep... you know? :sad1: Please help! I need sleep!!

Well, I can't diagnose you. But....I believe that what you have is part of whatever upper respiratory ailment you had 3 weeks ago. These things that involved the throat, coughs, etc. tend to hang on FOREVER. It's been awhile for me but I've had the same type of illness before, where I cough like crazy at night but am absolutely fine during the day. I also had a sore throat illness once that was so incredibly painful in the evening but would be almost gone during the day. It lasted a LONG time.

Whatever viral illness you had probably irritated the upper bronchial area and, when you lay day, it triggers it for some reason.

I don't have any suggestions to help you. Have you tried a sudafed, even though you don't have congestion? You might have a small amount you aren't aware of and it is draining a bit when you lay down. Sudafed, during the day, might make a difference later on. A steriod nasal spray might also help but you'd need a script for that. For some reason, that helped me when I had whooping cough.

I'm guessing you are having some drainage even if you don't normally have allergy/sinus issues. It seems everyone around here that never had this kind of problem is having a big issue with it right now. My boss has been going on the last 3 months constantly clearing her throat and coughing/hacking but no other symptoms.

If you can take Mucinex, think about taking one before going to bed. It should help with the drainage and thin out anything you need to cough up.

Good luck, my allergist said this has been one of the worst years every for people with or without allergy/sinus issues.

sounds like post nasal drip. Could be from allergies since the pollen is horrible this year. At night everything drains. My dd has been coughing at night for about 2 months. She was diagnosed with allergies. See your doc, since they can give you a perscription, if it is allergies, for something like flonase or nasonex.

Don’t laugh, I have been told that this works 100% of the time, although the scientists who discovered it aren’t sure why. To stop night time coughing, put VICKS VAPORUB generously on the bottom of the feet at bedtime, then cover with socks. Even persistent, heavy, deep coughing will stop in about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief. Works 100% of the time and is more effective in children than even very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly.

Google it for more information.

Yeah, I have the same thing. I keep water by my bedside and I have been using a nasal irrigation pot at night before I go to bed. The irrigation and the water that I sip if I wake up seem to help. I'm sure I have a sinus drainage issue and perhaps allergies. My son's allergies are the worst I've ever seen these last few weeks. If I have a LOT of drainage, I always use Mucinex, it really works.
