DHS goes dropless

We were just there yesterday and were surprised when we showed up at 8:45 and walked straight to TSM. We got FP's and hopped in the Stand-by line and were on the ride in 5 minutes. Had I known, we would have gotten there sooner, but the park was pretty empty all day anyway.

I was saying to my wife last year that they were going to HAVE to do something about the craziness at Rope Drop, not only at DHS, but at Epcot too, as it was nearly as bad as DHS. I even suggested to her that I didn't understand why they didn't just open the turnstiles when they were ready for the park to open, and let the time it takes to get through them ease the mess.

I'm glad to see they are doing it that way now!

Didn't see a thread just about this, so thought I'd share.
DHS has gone the way of Epcot and eliminated the rope drop....
No more running of the bulls to TSM!
Be at the turnstiles well in advance of open (by 8:10 in case of an 8:30 open, which they've been doing unannounced) and you'll be one of the first in the park, on the ride and holding a FP!

Well my sister and I were there January 2-6 , 2012 and was the same as always if one had breakfast reservations before 9 AM of which we did then still had to wait on rope drop at 9 AM to head to TSM...they start letting them in the turn styles around 8 or so but still have to stand behind ropes..:confused3

i will be watching this thread for updates since we leave so soon. i had already prepped brother that he would go with the herd (moooo) to get to the fastpasses, then meet the rest of us at the ride entrance to all go standby together. we may not have to do that, or at least not have to deal with the running of the bulls (i remember just my kiddies and i last time, and I had to hold on to them for dear life. lol)

AFAIK, they have never let guests into DHS starting around 8AM to await a 9AM Rope Drop. (Commonly, they would have opened the gates at approx. 8:45.)

They have always let guests in at around 8AM who have an early breakfast ADR.

Regardless, if your last day at WDW was Jan. 6, you likely where still too early in the month to experience the very recent new DHS opening procedure (that this thread describes.)

DH was really trying to talk me out of ropedrops for our spring break trip :scared1: simply due to the crowds that are held back in the mornings. DHS is the one that he really wanted to avoid. Hopefully, this change in plans will allow me to convince him to get there early still.

Oh mouse ears this is not good for me.We usually arrive about 20 til 9 and me, my sister, and my dad will look through the stores, while my very tall mother will squirm her way to the front of the rope and retrieve fastpasses i really don't want to have to arrive at 1 am to get a decent fastpass:sad::lmao:

No word if it will continue after Jan 20th.

I was there last Saturday for EMH at 8 AM and I was first in line at the turnstile. The CM told me they had to wait until 8 AM to let us through but that rope drop was gone. They were definitely still trying to figure out exactly what they were doing and at one point they thought they might let us in early, but then said that things weren't ready to open until 8:00 as they were waiting on some CMs. The CM was very nice and let us put our passes through a minute ahead of opening so we could walk right in with the strollers at 8 AM. They were very strict about not letting people run and there really wasn't any need to run....I walked to TSM and got a FP and rode it twice with the kids with hardly any wait.

when they let you in early, can you actually do anything besides walk around, ie are the rides running as soon as they open
